Chapter 659: Only Attributable to Luck
Lin Jiuze walked out of the ward, following behind Ji Xiang and Bai Chuzhang, silently hearing Bai Chuzhang talk about the provincial natural science fund.
When getting off the plane, he heard Bai Chuzhang and Ji Xiang talking about the Outstanding Youth Fund; some of these terms Lin Jiuze had encountered, some he hadn't, but it didn't matter.
Even if it were a different time, a different place, or a different person, anyone with a normal brain would invest a certain amount of resources into Ji Xiang after testing and understanding him.
Exactly how much resource would depend on the situation at the time.
For example, Lin Jiuze himself.
He was very troubled now and didn't think much further.
That patient who had been bleeding continuously after internal hemorrhoid surgery was the first patient Lin Jiuze had truly seen Ji Xiang diagnose in clinical work.
There was no camera crew here, so there was no issue of the diagnosis or the main diagnosis being leaked in advance.
His own repeated "diagnoses" had all yielded wrong answers, yet when Ji Xiang went to take the medical history and chatted with the patient for a few moments, he obtained the diagnosis of Budd-Chiari Syndrome.
Lin Jiuze felt more and more that Ji Xiang was quite interesting.
The diagnosis was imaginative, with absolutely no traces to follow.
Any doctor would be fixated on the patient's inexplicable postoperative oozing; who would take the post-exercise inguinal hernia and make an issue of it after asking about the medical history?
Yet Ji Xiang did it, and did it with flair.
In the end, Lin Jiuze personally confirmed that the patient indeed had Budd-Chiari Syndrome.
If it were any other illness, Lin Jiuze wouldn't have such a strong sense of frustration, but Budd-Chiari Syndrome is a disease specific to interventional radiology and vascular medicine, and he hadn't even spotted it!
Regarding this, Lin Jiuze fell into deep confusion, regret, guilt, and unwillingness to accept it.
Ultrasound confirmed it, an emergency surgery was arranged, angiography provided the final confirmation, and the vascular department performed the surgery.
The surgery for Budd-Chiari Syndrome is not considered difficult; the difficulty for this patient lay in the diagnosis.
After all, it is a chronic, non-typical disease; under normal circumstances, arriving at a diagnosis really depends on luck or rich clinical experience.
Ji Xiang is very young, and rich clinical experience seems to have nothing to do with him, so Lin Jiuze attributed everything to—luck.
It could only be attributed to luck, otherwise, Lin Jiuze simply couldn't get over this hurdle.
A few days passed, and everything was calm.
Ji Xiang and Zhao Zhe were performing hybrid surgeries for renal cancer, and Lin Jiuze also participated in them.
Because of the variety show, the number of people seeking medical treatment was significantly higher than before, which could be considered as having solved Ji Xiang's initial trouble.
And Lin Jiuze belonged to the third member of the medical team; he always stood to the side, observing Ji Xiang without showing himself.
As if looking at a first love, no matter how much Lin Jiuze looked at Ji Xiang, it was never enough.
This was a very strange doctor, at least one Lin Jiuze had never encountered before.
This day, after getting off work, Lin Jiuze and Ji Xiang changed clothes, preparing to go home; they had done 7 interventional embolization surgeries before renal cancer resection in one day, and the surgical volume was a bit high, so Lin Jiuze felt very tired.
At Massachusetts General Hospital, he did less than 100 surgeries a year; he didn't expect that coming to the Second Affiliated Hospital, he would likely finish a year's worth of surgeries in a month.
However, Lin Jiuze didn't complain or feel aggrieved; he could learn something from every surgery, and his coordination with Ji Xiang was becoming increasingly proficient.
"Doctor Lin, you go back first; we're done for the day," Ji Xiang said after changing his clothes.
"What about you?"
"I'm going to the Emergency Department; Meng Laoshi is on duty today."
"The Emergency Department?!" Lin Jiuze's head buzzed.
When he was at Massachusetts, Lin Jiuze was particularly unwilling to work in the outpatient department; those patients were bizarre, and although he only saw 10 patients a day, it still made Lin Jiuze feel overwhelmed.
Emergency, Ji Xiang—these two words filled his mind.
"Can I follow along and take a look?" Lin Jiuze asked.
"Sure, it doesn't matter." Ji Xiang walked toward the Emergency Department, and while walking, he took out his phone and told Meng Qingfei to order two portions of dumplings, chive and shrimp filling.
"Why dumplings?" Lin Jiuze asked because he didn't understand.
Ji Xiang had always been brooding over this matter; he couldn't exactly say "the more you eat, the more you get," but fortunately, you can't drink alcohol while on emergency duty, so it was still somewhat different from the old saying.
Or perhaps it was "nothing is more delicious than dumplings"? But the next sentence was too indecent.
When Lin Jiuze saw Meng Qingfei, he felt a bit unwell. Especially those two dark marks on the back of Meng Qingfei's white uniform; it was hard to believe such a doctor would gain a patient's trust.
He also couldn't believe that Ji Xiang would show extreme respect when talking to Meng Qingfei.
"I heard you've been doing quite a lot of surgeries lately; is everything going smoothly?" Meng Qingfei asked while eating the dumplings quickly.
"It's alright; they're all basic surgeries, no difficulty."
Meng Qingfei wasn't surprised; a portion of 18 dumplings was swallowed in less than 3 minutes.
He patted his stomach, indicating he was very satisfied.
"Meng Laoshi, is the emergency shift busy today?" Ji Xiang ate slightly slower, but infinitely faster than Lin Jiuze, who had only eaten 2 dumplings.
"Today is a good shift!" Meng Qingfei laughed, "Maybe it's because I got scratched during my last shift, so I have a premonition that I'll have a good sleep this shift."
"Are there any patients outside?"
The "outside" Ji Xiang asked about referred to patients who were undergoing examinations and would return at any time; once they returned, Meng Qingfei would have to start getting busy.
"There's one, nothing much."
As Meng Qingfei spoke, his expression was a bit strange.
He smiled, "The patient caused a head injury by banging his head against the wall himself; does that count as 'banging one's head against the ground' as learned in textbooks?"
"Why?"
"After the patient arrived, he rambled to me for a long time; I found his spirit was a bit broken. But it's fine, people like him just have a temporary emotional problem; go home and sleep, if that doesn't work, sleep for a few days, and he'll be fine."
Ji Xiang got into position, waiting to hear Meng Qingfei gossip.
"The patient is someone who digs earthwork in our city," Meng Qingfei said, then asked, "Xiao Ji, you know about digging earthwork, right?"
"I know, high profit, but you have to get along with the local villages; it belongs to the gray area," Ji Xiang replied.
"Hmm? How do you know?" Meng Qingfei was a bit puzzled.
"When I was little, my dad liked to drive me around, and he would tell me about whatever he saw. Once, we saw a wild lake where people were fishing, but what my dad told me about was the business of earthwork excavation."
"According to my dad, the area around that wild lake was quite steep; it didn't look like a natural formation, so it must have been created by the people doing the earthwork. Later, it rained, water accumulated, and it turned into a wild lake."
"Your dad is truly an interesting person," Meng Qingfei praised.
"My dad's point was to tell me what kind of people are best not to provoke, for example, that group of people who do earthwork. He said they have intricate connections with the locals and a bunch of hotheaded youths under them, so it's best not to have any contact with them if it's not necessary."
Meng Qingfei nodded; he very much agreed with Ji Xiang's father's words.
"The Patient opened a company and found a charming and beautiful female manager to handle some of the work on the surface for him. But not long after, he got together with the female manager. That person's methods were indeed formidable; in less than a year, the mistress took over, entered the house, and became the legitimate wife."
