Chapter 662: Post-operative Hemoptysis

~8 min read 1,401 words

Mo Chenggui is performing surgery with Wang Daxiao.

They have been performing surgeries for a lifetime; they could truly complete them with their eyes closed.

"Mo, Xiao Ji is back, and he actually didn't forget us." Wang Daxiao pressed the button on the stapler with a "click," the skin was sutured, and the surgery ended.

"Cough, cough, cough~" Mo Chenggui coughed twice and said, "I didn't even expect Xiao Ji to bring us gifts; this child... cough, cough, cough, is good."

"Look at you, are you seventy or eighty yet? Why is your cough still not getting better?" Wang Daxiao looked down on his old partner. "When you retire in a few years, hurry to Hainan. My mother was coughing constantly before she went to Hainan years ago, and she was fine the moment she got off the plane."

"Wang Daxiao, is it really that magical? Is Hainan really that good?" the Nurse asked.

"It is. Saying it stops coughing immediately is a bit of an exaggeration, but my mother's coughing reduced by 90%, and she stopped coughing after a few days," Wang Daxiao said. "Cold and dry—these are all triggers for bronchitis. By the way!"

"Do you know where exiled prisoners were sent during the Qing Dynasty?"

"Is it Ningguta?" the Nurse ventured.

"Right, it's Ningguta," Wang Daxiao said. "It's right next to my school."

"..." The Nurse paused.

"Ning'an County, there are all sorts of ancient buildings from the Qing and Jin dynasties there. You tell me, the Russians exiled prisoners to Siberia, and the Qing Dynasty to Ningguta; in the old saying, these are all lands of extreme northern bitterness and cold."

"What's the point of staying in such a dump, and it doesn't even have an outlet to the sea. Every time the Northeast is revitalized, housing prices in Hainan go up."

This tired old joke was ancient, but at this moment, it moved Mo Chenggui quite a bit.

He had been coughing recently, and Mo Chenggui hadn't checked it; he figured it must be caused by tracheitis, bronchitis, or something similar, and there was nothing to worry about with a winter cough.

"Mo Jiaoshou, Wang Daxiao, what did Ji Xiang bring you?" the Nurse asked.

"A signed jersey from Neymar, and it's one Neymar actually wore!" Wang Daxiao said triumphantly.

He could talk about this for the rest of his life.

If he happened to be at a gossipy dinner table, he could start from the first day Ji Xiang entered the department and his own keen eye for talent, all the way to his fruitful results and having students all over the world.

The young Nurse was a bit envious; she blinked her eyes a few times but didn't speak. It looked like she wanted Neymar's signed jersey too, whether it had been worn or not didn't matter.

Unfortunately, Ji Xiang didn't remember her.

"Cough, cough, cough~ Wang Daxiao, stop showing off and hurry up with the surgery." Mo Chenggui said.

The surgery was, of course, smooth, and the two stepped down after a dozen skin-suture surgeries.

Mo Chenggui was just about to say something when a sudden, violent coughing fit interrupted him.

After coughing, Mo Chenggui took off his mask.

"Mo, we're in the operating room; even though the surgery is done, follow the rules." Wang Daxiao began to critique Mo Chenggui's actions.

Mo Chenggui was usually meticulous in his work and had often lectured Wang Daxiao about not wearing a cap or not covering his nose with his mask when entering.

After more than a dozen years, he had finally found an opportunity to lecture him, and Wang Daxiao certainly couldn't let it go.

If he missed this village, Wang Daxiao didn't know if there would be another shop.

But Mo Chenggui didn't speak; he stared blankly at the mask.

Wang Daxiao realized something; his heart suddenly hung in his throat, and he walked over to take a look.

Bright red!

Damn it!!

Mo is coughing up blood!!!

The two big characters "Lung Cancer" appeared in Wang Daxiao's mind, gradually growing larger, and blood began to seep rapidly from every stroke, dripping and dropping, terrifyingly so.

The operating room suddenly went quiet.

"What are you two doing? Hurry up and go change your clothes; I need to disinfect," the Nurse walked in and, seeing Mo Chenggui and Wang Daxiao still there, urged them.

Wang Daxiao snatched the mask, took one more deep look at it, balled it up, and stuffed it into the pocket of his isolation gown.

"Mo, go change, and come with me to get a CT."

Mo Chenggui was silent.

He seemed as if he had been stunned; he didn't say a word, his eyes were somewhat hollow, and his face was pale.

What the bloodstains on the mask meant could not be hidden from a Doctor.

It wasn't tuberculosis, it wasn't a ruptured capillary in the upper respiratory tract; it had to be Lung Cancer.

And it was mid-to-late stage Lung Cancer, already causing hemoptysis.

"Let's go, let's go."

Before the Nurse could understand what had happened, Wang Daxiao grabbed Mo Chenggui by the arm and dragged him off to change clothes.

"How strange," the Nurse said with disdain. "They were fine when they were doing surgery just now; what's wrong with them?"

After changing clothes, the two returned to the Second Affiliated Hospital.

Wang Daxiao didn't stand on ceremony at all; he dragged Mo Chenggui straight to the CT Room and cut the line to put Mo Chenggui on the CT machine.

"Wang Daxiao, what's wrong with Mo Jiaoshou?" the operator in the CT Room asked. "A cold? Lobar Pneumonia?"

Wang Daxiao didn't speak, but instead took out Mo Chenggui's mask and looked at it again and again.

White foamy sputum, mixed with blood—not blood streaks, but blood clots. This basically ruled out the possibility of bleeding caused by ruptured capillaries from a dry upper respiratory tract.

The more he looked, the more anxious he felt. The Doctor in the CT Room nearby kept chattering away, and Wang Daxiao really wanted to use the mask to plug his mouth.

The examination was finished quickly, and Mo Chenggui came to the control room, taking a look at his own scans while the next Patient was getting on the machine.

Wang Daxiao didn't stop him.

They were both Doctors who had treated thousands of Cancer patients; at this point, the less he let Mo Chenggui see, the more he would let his mind wander to the north, south, east, and west.

Anyway, it was basically an open game; it was better to let him look at it together.

On the machine, the images appeared frame by frame, and soon Mo Chenggui and Wang Daxiao felt as if they had fallen into an ice cellar. Even the chattering CT Room Doctor fell silent, not daring to say a single useless word.

A 3cm tumor in the lower lobe of the right lung appeared before their eyes, with small spicules on the edges—this damn thing was—Lung Cancer!

And it was discovered after coughing up blood; even if surgery were performed, the results likely wouldn't be good.

Wang Daxiao narrowed his eyes to look at other locations; there were multiple small nodules within the lungs.

Damn it!

He had smoked his whole life and was fine, so how could Mo be the one to get Lung Cancer first!

Could it be that he caused it by inhaling his secondhand smoke?

Wang Daxiao's mind was muddled, with countless thoughts popping up; it seemed as if he had thought of a lot, yet it also felt like he hadn't thought of anything at all.

"Please help me print out the scans." Mo Chenggui was actually very calm; he tried his best to control his voice, but the final word "out" still wavered, his voice trembling.

"Professor Mo, very well." The Doctor in the CT Room said hurriedly.

He didn't dare to talk nonsense; feeling a faint sense of sympathy for a fellow sufferer, he didn't bother with the inspection report, printed the scans, put them in a bag, and handed them to Mo Chenggui.

"Mo, come with me to get blood drawn for testing; I don't think it's that." Wang Daxiao said.

Mo Chenggui's face twitched; he wanted to squeeze out a smile, but he failed, the muscles on his face trembling.
