Chapter 7: The Epoch-Making Product Created by Zhou Congwen
"Doctor Xiao Ji, calm down." The System NPC patted Ji Xiang on the shoulder and comforted him.
"Teacher..."
Ji Xiang had a thousand words to say, but he did not know how to express them. He called out "Teacher," then paused.
"For a doctor, the hardest thing is Empathy." The System NPC reached back, grabbed a bottle of 10% glucose, and handed it to him.
Ji Xiang opened the glucose and took a gentle sip.
Hypoglycemia under various stress states is occasionally encountered in the operating room; of course, not in patients, but when doctors or nurses run into problems.
Drinking sugar water to quickly replenish energy can prevent many accidental situations from occurring.
"However, the ability of Empathy has a major drawback. I once mentored a Doctor of Philosophy whose ability for Empathy was so strong that he was unable to engage in Clinical work."
Ji Xiang carefully savored this sentence from the System NPC.
The amount of information contained in this sentence was too rich, and having just detached from the state of Empathy, countless thoughts flooded in, causing Ji Xiang to nearly crash.
"Teacher, are you not a System NPC?" Ji Xiang asked.
"You can understand it that way; they say this is an explanation that young people today can accept more easily." The System NPC hunched his back, a kind and benevolent smile appearing on his face.
The smile was very broad and gentle, giving one the illusion that all things in the world were of no consequence.
Ji Xiang felt as if he had touched upon some great secret.
"The experience of Empathy naturally has benefits, immense benefits; this is something I have personally experienced." The System NPC ignored what Ji Xiang was thinking and continued, "But it also has immense drawbacks."
"The duality of things?"
"Yes." The System NPC said, "Your talent is good; it would be a great pity if you were to give up medicine because of a single instance of Empathy."
Ji Xiang recalled the scenes where he had played the role of a Patient in the system and was slightly stunned.
"I was worried you would suffer too intense a stimulus, so I woke you up directly." The System NPC scrutinized Ji Xiang for a full 3 seconds before asking, "Doctor Xiao Ji, do you have any psychological trauma?"
Ji Xiang pondered, recalling everything he had just experienced.
The System NPC was not in a hurry, his kind gaze firm and persistent.
The shame of lying on the operating table, naked and being watched by others.
The 5ml Syringe needle landing at the base, pushing the medication in.
Finally, the Anesthesia to the head—that agonizing, unbearable sensation.
Watching the donkey hoof repair almost cause a blunder, the erection nearly bursting the Suturing site.
These sensations Ji Xiang had personally experienced came flooding back like a tide, but none of it was as strange as the moment "his own" hand landed on the surgical site at the end.
Ji Xiang shook his head slightly.
"This system was made by Zhou Congwen leading a team. I don't really accept the ideas of young people, but I don't interfere with what young people do. More unrestrained thinking—that is the true advanced productive force." The System NPC said slowly.
Zhou Congwen? Who was he? Ji Xiang tried hard to think.
If he could create something so awesome, this Zhou Congwen should be a big shot, yet he had no impression of this name at all.
"Facts prove that he did quite well, especially with this Empathy." The System NPC said, "A doctor's heart is like that of a parent, yet parents, for the most part, cannot truly feel what their children feel. To a certain extent, this is a generation gap."
"Teacher, is that really necessary?" Ji Xiang asked, feeling slightly bewildered.
"Necessary?" The System NPC took off his mask and took a deep breath.
Ji Xiang saw that the System NPC's face was covered in deep wrinkles, like gullies. Although he knew he was not tired, he still moved the white stool from the System Operating Room over.
The System NPC sat down and looked up at Ji Xiang slightly.
"I ask you, did it hurt when the Anesthesia was administered?"
"It hurt, especially that last injection to supplement it." Ji Xiang truthfully stated his feelings at the time.
"When you see the surgeon administering Anesthesia to a patient, what do you think?"
"That the patient is too delicate, too dramatic; it's just Local Anesthesia." Ji Xiang hesitated slightly, but still spoke his true thoughts from when he watched Wang Daxiao administer Anesthesia to a patient.
"That is the true meaning of 'you don't know the pain until the knife falls on you'." The System NPC said slowly, "I think the entire teaching system is quite ordinary, but this Empathy is different."
Ji Xiang was silent.
The System NPC made it sound simple, but the knife... that supplementary injection to the head really hurt like hell!
"It is the first set of equipment in history that allows the surgeon to personally perceive the patient's perception. The benefits within this are immense, both for the doctor and for future patients.
It is no exaggeration to say it has epoch-making significance."
"What about parents? Other people's perceptions can never catch up to one's own."
"I had a student who had surgery for a right-sided thyroid adenoma. That kid had a lot on his mind and refused general anesthesia, eventually using Reinforced Local Anesthesia + Cervical Plexus Anesthesia. I performed the surgery myself, and it was over in less than twenty minutes."
"But when the surgery ended, he was already clearly agitated and even nearly kicked over the instrument table."
"From then on, he never mocked patients undergoing thyroid adenoma excision under local anesthesia again; he would even try every possible way to make the patient more comfortable if he was off-stage whenever a patient said they were uncomfortable."
(Note: I experienced this personally in 2008. I originally wanted to remove a mole while I was at it, but I ended up nearly kicking the operating table over. Shameful.)
"This system is epoch-making." The System NPC emphasized his tone at the end, saying the words "epoch-making" once more.
Ji Xiang thought about his own experience and nodded slightly.
"I'll count the task as completed, even though you didn't feel everything." The System NPC smiled.
"Ding-dong~"
A crisp sound rang in Ji Xiang's ears.
【Temporary Compensation Task: 'You don't know the pain until the knife falls on you' completed. Comprehension +1, Experience Points +300.】
Ji Xiang no longer cared about what benefits he had gained; the System NPC's words echoed in his mind.
Letting a doctor perceive a patient's pain—besides being helpful to the patient, this seemed to be helpful to the doctor as well.
And not just ordinary help, but a revolutionary change.
"What are you thinking about?" The System NPC asked indifferently.
A few seconds later, Ji Xiang asked, "Teacher, how can one administer anesthesia so that the patient doesn't feel pain? Without needing that last supplementary injection?"
A look of gratification appeared on the System NPC's face.
Ji Xiang is a child with extraordinary talent; he is truly a good seedling.
He understood his meaning in an instant and silently overcame his inner demon; the question he asked was also right to the point.
"As the name implies, the dorsal nerve is located on the dorsal side and originates from the left and right pudendal nerves. The purpose of Local Infiltration Anesthesia is..."
The System NPC began to explain the nerves involved in Circumcision to Ji Xiang.
Although these pieces of knowledge were all covered in books, the System NPC's explanation was profound yet simple, especially when it came to technical key points, which were supported by extensive citations and examples.
After the explanation, the dissection began. When facing the Simulated Human, Ji Xiang felt a little uncomfortable inside.
But he quickly suppressed the thought of putting himself in its place and immersed himself in the System NPC's explanation.
One "so that's how it is" realization after another appeared in Ji Xiang's mind, dispelling his fear of "Empathy."
I do not know how much time passed before the System NPC finished the explanation and began to guide Ji Xiang through the operation.
Only after completely exhausting Ji Xiang's Basic Endurance Value did the System NPC terminate the surgical training.
"That is all for today."
"Teacher, thank you." Ji Xiang took off his sterile gown and bowed respectfully to the System NPC.
In Ji Xiang's view, this System NPC was not void, but a flesh-and-blood existence worthy of respect.
"To be able to receive a Newbie Gift Pack and master a surgical procedure to this extent, you are also very impressive," the System NPC smiled.
"..."
Ji Xiang was stunned.
Newbie Gift Pack? This term felt worlds away.
If one does not count the almost infinite time within the system, the last time he heard the words "Newbie Gift Pack" was over ten hours ago.
"Teacher, will I be restricted when I enter here in the future?" Ji Xiang asked.
"No, you can come whenever you want," the System NPC said as if it were a matter of course. "But to perform surgical training, you need to have a certain accumulation. Simply put, you have to prove that you are worth cultivating."
Ji Xiang sighed.
"This is also something that cannot be helped." The System NPC reached out and patted Ji Xiang on the shoulder.
"Then what surgical procedure can you teach me next time?"
"It depends on the situation; it might be Stapler Circumcision."
The System NPC smiled slightly and did not continue to explain, but gave a gentle push.
Everything went black before Ji Xiang's eyes, and when he opened them again, he had returned to reality.
It all felt like a dream; the edematous swimming ring and the purple-black head appeared in Ji Xiang's mind immediately like a nightmare.
He subconsciously reached out to touch it.
It was still hard and there.
That is good.
His Basic Endurance had been completely exhausted, and after Circumcision was upgraded to level 3, only 10 points remained, which became 8120 after training and mission rewards.
Ji Xiang had no time to think too much before falling into a deep sleep.
Meanwhile.
Wang Daxiao was clinking glasses with someone.
"Mo, let me tell you, I met a pretty good kid today." Wang Daxiao gulped down a mouthful of alcohol.
"Oh? Who? No new people have come recently."
A man in his fifties sitting next to Wang Daxiao, whose bald head reflected the light in a dazzling way, asked casually.
"A new Standardized Training Student."
"Are you kidding? A Standardized Training Student, and a new one at that? How good could they possibly be?" Mo Jiaoshou said with disdain.
"That bunch of brats from the Department of Science and Education insisted on taking the Standardized Training Students to tour the hospital and wanted Zhao Yuanzhang's son to go on stage to get a feel for it. I know you don't like to deal with these things, but you missed a great show."
"Zhao Yuanzhang's son, heh, nonsense!" Mo Jiaoshou said. "The whole Standardized Residency Training is nonsense."
"You can't say it like that; there are still benefits to Standardized Residency Training." Wang Daxiao gently retorted and immediately brought the topic back. "I took the Standardized Training Students on stage, and one of the kids had very skilled technique. On a whim, I let him tie a knot."
"Heh." Mo Jiaoshou snorted disapprovingly.
Among the Standardized Training Students, there are those who are attentive and can tie knots that are satisfactory.
But it is just tying knots; even if it is good, how good can it really be?
"At the time, I just thought his knot-tying was not bad, but I thought about it for a long time this afternoon; it wasn't just 'not bad,' it was very good."
"Hahaha, have you lost your mind?" Mo Jiaoshou laughed loudly. "Even if they practice hard every day during their internship or rotation, how many knots can they tie on stage? Practicing below is just a basic skill; they'll be dumbfounded as soon as they get on stage."
"Mo, you really shouldn't doubt it. Take him to try it tomorrow," Wang Daxiao said, the smile on his face turning into melancholy as he sighed. "At that moment, I even had the thought of taking him out to perform surgeries."
Mo Jiaoshou was somewhat moved. He looked Wang Daxiao up and down, and seeing that his old friend did not seem to be joking, he frowned and said, "Is he really that good?"
Taking someone to a private hospital to perform surgery is no joke.
In a public hospital, if something goes wrong, the hospital administration takes the heat; at worst, one gets scolded in a few meetings.
Over so many years, the only person who seems to have been sentenced for medical conduct is that idiot who started a livestream during a gynecological exam.
Private hospitals make more money, but the surgeon has to bear the responsibility.
To take a Standardized Training Student to a private hospital to perform surgery—how big must one's heart be!
