Chapter 47: Saying Goodbye to the Past

~6 min read 1,143 words

The new detective agency was warm, comfortable, and cozy.

While remodeling his home, Wu Xian’s heart was gradually cleansed.

He was an orphan.

He remembered nothing of his life before ten, and after that, he was adopted by an old detective who forced him to complete half of college.

As for why only half…

Of course, the old man died.

Wu Xian dropped out and took over the detective agency, then began investigating the Fudi case; during that time, he didn’t care what became of himself—he only wanted to uncover the truth of Fudi.

Wu Xian bit into a piece of guobao meat and spotted a clean-faced yellow-haired youth with earrings sneaking toward the storage locker.

“So there’s something watching.”

But when he opened the locker and felt bundles of cash through the cloth wrapping, he lowered his guard and quietly pried open a slit in the package.

If this domineering little puppy was smart enough, he’d notice the holes in Wu Xian’s story—but Wu Xian didn’t think a gambling dog who extorted his girlfriend had that much intelligence.

Wu Xian didn’t know how things would unfold next.

So he wanted to live deliberately, beautifully.

Wu Xian walked back to his room and answered the call; a crisp, energetic male voice came through—the man must be the “domineering little puppy.”

He glanced through the slit and instantly turned pale, stomping in fury where he stood.

He smiled faintly and replied in a formulaic tone.

Then Wu Xian set up a scheduled email, packed his phone and some yellow paper into a parcel, and sealed it.

Wu Xian squatted on the floor, boxing up old items he couldn’t bring himself to throw away; when he reached a photo frame, he paused, hesitated, then placed it on the nightstand.

Wu Xian reviewed Lu Yuzhu’s transaction records; the little puppy had never repaid a single cent.

“Let’s learn to bark together, woof woof woof…”

But if Fudi’s influence on reality ran deep enough, something interesting should happen soon.

The little puppy was overjoyed: “Convenient! Absolutely convenient!”

Plan A is out—time to try Plan B.

He had placed the parcel in the locker last night.

“Finally arrived.”

The photo in the frame was of Wu Xian and an old man.

“Even if I die, I will make my voice heard!”

“Our rule is that relics cannot be handed over personally; before noon tomorrow, I’ll place the parcel in the storage locker across from Qipe Restaurant on Chuhe Road. After I put it there, I’ll send you the locker number and password, is that acceptable?”

Two hours ago, Lu Yuzhu’s email sent a scheduled message to the editor-in-chief of Fuyuan City’s largest newspaper.

Time neared twelve.

This area’s surveillance was outdated, and he deliberately avoided routes where he might encounter people—no one would know he’d placed it.

“Now, I only need to do one last thing, and I can fully say goodbye to the past.”

“No wonder I searched for three years and found not a single useful lead…”

“I’m forever trapped inside, unable to leave.”

“My love, this document is vital. I can’t tell you the unlock code directly, but if you remember our promise, you’ll recall the password. Please, protect this document for me.”

“Tch. Still a gambling dog.”

The email read as follows.

“Hello, this is Ping’an Funeral Home. Are you a family member of Ms. Lu Yuzhu? She was cremated here three days ago. May I ask…”

“Anyone who dares defy this warning has vanished from the world—perhaps even worse than death.”

He deleted the previous folder, downloaded the full set of “Huluwa,” encrypted it multiple times, compressed it into a single file, stored it on Lu Yuzhu’s phone, and wrote a note.

But after entering Fudi, his heart strangely settled into peace.

“I will expose the terrifying truth—everything about the Fudi case is on my phone. My beloved will tell you all.”

He went outside the detective agency, climbed a ladder, removed the sign, and, amid the bewildered stares of passersby, tossed it without hesitation into the trash.

“The heavenly secrets must not be revealed.”

The ringtone wasn’t Wu Xian’s—it was Lu Yuzhu’s.

But when Wu Xian tried to save it, he was suddenly seized by a heart-stopping jolt.

A wisp of foulness seeped from the computer; a black-robed shadow suddenly appeared, a blackened hand resting on Wu Xian’s shoulder, a blurred face whispering into his ear.

The young man was the “domineering little puppy.”

The house was cleaned up now.

If information about Fudi leaked from Wu Xian’s hands to someone unfamiliar with Fudi, Wu Xian would face something terrible.

His name was Huo Gai.

Disguised simply, Wu Xian ordered a few dishes and a bottle of “Tingba” coconut juice, sat by the window, and savored his meal with half-closed eyes.

Just as Wu Xian reveled in the freedom of breaking free, he suddenly heard a phone ring from inside the room.

“Follow your rules—I’m not in a hurry!”

“Bad luck! She’s dead? Don’t come to me for funeral costs—I barely knew her.”

“Please, stop hiding it—let everyone know the truth!”

It was time to investigate. Wu Xian no longer worked as a detective, but since he’d be entering Fudi often, he needed to uncover certain truths to find peace.

The next day.

Wu Xian smirked: “No, Ms. Lu’s relics are a phone and some cash. Would you be willing to receive them?”

“Hey, Yuzhu, help me! I lost at cards—transfer me a thousand yuan. I’ll pay you back when I win.”

Wu Xian brushed the dust off his clothes and stood up.

The black-robed shadow must have been Fudi’s warning to him.

Wu Xian sighed helplessly.

Wu Xian went to the newly renovated gaming room.

He sat in the ergonomic chair, took a long while to recover his mobility; the words “The heavenly secrets must not be revealed” had struck him with greater mental shock than even the previous Fudi’s boss, the Mother Who Sought Her Child.

Huo Gai feared Lu Yuzhu’s parents might come for the relics, so he remained alert to his surroundings.

When Wu Xian first got Lu Yuzhu’s phone, he realized the little puppy was psychologically abusing her.

“A beautiful life doesn’t need work.”

Soon, time neared twelve.

Wu Xian hung up the call.

This document was a bait.

Wu Xian narrowed his eyes.

He turned on the computer with full RGB lighting and crafted a file: he inputted Qi Zhiyong’s notes, added details from this Fudi, and included Wu Xian’s own theories about Fudi.

With those words, the shadow vanished into nothingness.

Now that he was a Favored One, Fudi would no longer withhold certain things from him—he should be able to uncover far more than before.

Chuhe Road, Qipe Restaurant.

The parcel didn’t contain cash.

It contained stacks of spirit money!
