Chapter 55: Borrowing a Spirit to Catch the Killer
Ding.
Ding ding…
Wu Xian and the other four, who had just been brimming with confidence, all froze inside the elevator, staring at each other.
Jin Mo frantically pressed the ground floor button, but the elevator didn’t move at all; after several attempts, he frowned and asked:
“That’s not right—did the elevator break down?”
Wu Xian stared at the reflection in the elevator’s polished steel panel; his expression finally cracked. After a two-second silence, he said: “Maybe… it’s overloaded.”
Jin Mo shook his head: “Impossible. This elevator’s capacity is eight people—we’re only five. How could it be overloaded?”
He was deeply dissatisfied with the investigation bureau’s junk car; if it weren’t for its sluggish speed, they could’ve checked two more suspicious locations.
The clouds overhead were dyed orange by the setting sun.
Several officers waiting to clock out instantly slumped.
“I’ve just gotten fat—I’ll take the stairs down. Wait for me downstairs.”
“Switch seats—I’ll drive. I know where he’s hiding!”
Their movements were unnaturally agile; each leap carried them several meters forward—no martial arts film could capture such motion. They quickly caught up to the fleeing criminal, grabbed one arm and one leg each, and lifted him clean off the ground.
Xu Xiaoyan stood at the intersection, letting vehicles roll over her body, her arm slowly pointing in one direction.
“This way…”
With one person gone, the elevator resumed normal function—the numbers began descending.
Wu Xian didn’t want to kill outright in front of these brute men—how then could he avenge his family?
He could only watch helplessly as the four strongmen bound the criminal and shoved him into the car; he didn’t even get a chance to speak two words to the suspect.
“Go on, kill him! Avenge us!”
“No wonder that fat old man trusted me with the position of lead investigator—these four are basically live surveillance units…”
This new lead investigator had something sinister about him; his words and actions resembled someone they all knew…
The four inside the elevator exchanged glances, suddenly feeling a chill at the back of their necks.
Aside from being idiotically clueless during investigations, their combat strength is maxed out!
But to be fair—
Wu Xian sat in the front passenger seat.
She was guiding Wu Xian—the killer was right in the direction she pointed!
Wu Xian licked his lips.
“Already caught him?”
The four young men leapt into the air at once—one executed a flying kick, one spread his arms like a great roc, one spun three and a half times midair, and the other twisted sideways…
Now he was officially lead investigator; the Spirit Pass had warned him—he must act in accordance with his role. So in front of the four officers, he couldn’t strike.
Wu Xian stepped out of the elevator.
“Catch him! Don’t let him escape!”
Wu Xian slowed his pace.
As he pondered—
His gaze grew vacant; his mouth hung slightly open.
Boom!
The prefab shed collapsed in a thunderous crash, kicking up thick dust; a figure slipped through the cloud and sprinted into the wilderness under cover of night. The wilderness was thick with weeds and shrubs—if he got far enough, they’d never know which way he’d gone.
Pedestrians on the street grew sparse; the evening wind carried a chill.
Time to clock out!
But they had no choice but to cooperate—those who clock out on time are rare in this line of work.
Are these officers really this fierce?
But now the problem arose:
The criminal’s counter-surveillance skills were nearly on par with Wu Xian’s own—someone of this caliber couldn’t be caught in a short time.
But in truth, Wu Xian hoped the criminal would vanish entirely.
Wu Xian endured the agony and soothed them.
Wu Xian held too few cards; he could only track the criminal through traces he left behind—footprints, eyewitnesses, surveillance footage, and deducing where the criminal might go…
Wu Xian glanced at the rearview mirror and thought: failing to catch the criminal couldn’t be blamed entirely on this car.
“He’s hiding right here!”
Wu Xian suddenly froze!
He checked the rearview mirror first, confirmed no vehicles behind, then urgently tapped Jin Mo, who was driving.
From their expressions, it was clear: if Wu Xian truly broke investigation bureau rules in front of them, they’d arrest him on the spot.
Ghosts pointing the way?
And these officers are no good either!
Each one’s a stubborn fool—useless except for dragging everyone down.
The five drew their pistols, crouched low, and slowly closed in on the prefab shed, leaving no chance for the suspect to escape.
But before they could get close enough—
Wu Xian felt a surge of excitement—who hadn’t fantasized about having a cheat for solving cases?
A fleeing criminal is a good criminal!
After all, Wu Xian could track his location anytime—he’d rather the criminal ran, so he could pursue alone and find the perfect moment to kill him and avenge his family of four.
“Stop! Don’t try to run!”
Xu Xiaoyan, who had just been trying to suck the yang energy from the handsome man, suddenly vanished; in front of the car, a girl with blood-soaked clothes appeared out of nowhere.
Xu Xiaoyan had been pressed against Jin Mo, the handsomest one, their faces nearly touching; He Ya rode atop Gu Ge’s head, her ample figure obscuring his face from Wu Xian’s view…
Wu Xian’s lips curled upward.
“With them around, I won’t bring trouble to the investigation bureau.”
During the investigation, Wu Xian had wanted to use coercion, threats, or illegal home intrusions to gather information—but they’d sternly warned him against it.
The criminal struggled violently in midair, tears welling in his eyes; he wanted to shout something, but Jin Mo slapped a strip of tape over his mouth.
But if this continues…
At Wu Xian’s command, the four officers moved in unison!
Xu Qingfeng, He Ya, and the other three spirits circled Wu Xian, screaming wildly, their nails digging into his flesh.
Dusk.
Besides Wu Xian and the four officers, the family of four spirits were crammed awkwardly into the tiny car—and the four officers, despite having intimate contact with the spirits, remained utterly unaware.
…
Unconsciously, Wu Xian’s investigation team had searched all day, nearing the end of their shift.
He’d tried many similar methods—but each had been obscured.
With these four added to the load, Wu Xian felt replacing the car wouldn’t matter much.
Then the family of four spirits took turns vanishing, guiding Wu Xian and the others—soon they arrived outside the city, at a long-abandoned prefab shed.
Wu Xian stared in shock for a long while before recovering.
“Stop the car!”
So Wu Xian feigned anxious urgency and gave the order.
Wu Xian glanced again at the chaotic spirits in the rearview mirror—God only knew what might happen if they delayed too long.
Wu Xian confidently pointed at the prefab shed.
The scene struck Wu Xian as horrifying.
“Endure it… just a little longer.”
“I’ll find my chance—it won’t be long. Now isn’t the right time to act.”
