They had threatened him repeatedly, dragging him into their mess over and over again. And now that Xinyuan had finally chosen something for himself, Wenzhi had suddenly become the villain.

His expression darkened. He wasn’t the one who caused a faction war. These people simply needed someone to blame for the consequences of their own actions, and he had become the easiest target.

And frankly? Hearing this from Zhiyao irritated him even more. Back at the Rift Suppression Corps, Zhiyao had acted so curious about him. Now he was standing there repeating the same institutional nonsense as everyone else.

"We’re heading to Sector One to join another organization," Zhiyao suddenly revealed, though his eyes remained cautiously fixed on Xinyuan. "We quit the CEA after finding all this out from one of the researchers Yuzhen threatened."

Wenzhi narrowed his eyes. "And we’re supposed to believe that?"

Yuzhen quickly stood up and moved beside his guide. "Hearing that you two destroyed the CEA headquarters was the final push we needed," he admitted honestly. "The Commander disappeared, Kaiwen left, Chenxi’s missing... our whole team is falling apart. The place is toxic, man."

Wenzhi’s eyes twitched. He didn’t trust them. Not even a little.

And apparently, they noticed. Honestly, everyone in this world seemed terrible at approaching people.

Wenzhi no longer wanted to continue the conversation, so he simply turned and walked away. As expected, Xinyuan trailed right behind him. Wenzhi didn’t chase him off. Instead, he stopped beside one of the narrow windows lining the cargo ship walls.

Beyond the glass, thick white clouds stretched endlessly across the sky. He leaned quietly against the metal wall.

Xinyuan stood nearby, watching him carefully. "Are you okay, Wenzhi?"

"No," Wenzhi replied instantly, his voice sharper than intended. "I’m not okay. How exactly am I wanted? What did I even do?"

He looked genuinely offended by the entire situation. "I didn’t do anything."

Xinyuan’s lips curled faintly. "I’m sorry."

Wenzhi shot him an unimpressed look before turning back to stare out at the clouds.

I need to leave.

That thought surfaced instinctively.

But halfway through the thought, Wenzhi stopped himself and let out a tired sigh.

"Xinyuan? I know you do not want me to leave. The whole imprint situation..." he ran his fingers through his messy hair. "But I—"

"I’m going to check for food... fruit... anything to eat," Xinyuan cut in, hurrying away.

Wenzhi blinked in disbelief as Xinyuan walked straight back toward Yuzhen and Zhiyao. Is he seriously avoiding this conversation?

Wenzhi scoffed softly under his breath, looking back out the small window at the endless sea of drifting clouds. But after a moment, his eyes strayed back toward Xinyuan anyway. The Esper was now crouched beside Yuzhen, while the other Esper excitedly helped him search through their supplies.

Wenzhi twisted his lips. Then, his eyes suddenly locked with Zhiyao’s.

The guide had been watching him quietly from across the hold. Wenzhi looked away.

For a while, a heavy silence filled the space. Eventually, Wenzhi pushed himself off the wall and returned to sit beside Xinyuan, who had successfully gathered a few fruits.

The ride stretched on for hours. By nighttime, the cargo ship had fallen mostly quiet. Yuzhen and Zhiyao were asleep nearby, while Xinyuan’s head rested against Wenzhi’s shoulder, his eyes closed. Wenzhi remained wide awake, his thoughts refusing to settle.

All of a sudden, Zhiyao shifted awake. His eyes opened, meeting Wenzhi’s gaze in the dim light. For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Zhiyao slowly pushed himself upright and cleared his throat awkwardly. "I’m sorry about earlier."

Wenzhi looked at him flatly. "No, you’re fucking not."

Zhiyao sighed tiredly. "You have to understand my perspective."

"Your perspective is pissing me off," Wenzhi snapped.

Surprisingly, Zhiyao smiled faintly instead of getting angry. He looked at Wenzhi with that exact same expression he’d worn the very first day they met. Even back then, beneath all the trolling directed at Xinyuan, it had been obvious Zhiyao found Wenzhi interesting. Attractive, too. He liked the sharp, freckled face, the constant irritation, and the profound exhaustion hidden just beneath the hostility.

"I’m sorry," Zhiyao repeated, his voice dropping to a quiet murmur.

Wenzhi flipped him off, grabbed one of the apples beside him, and took an aggressive, loud crunch out of it.

Zhiyao stared for a second, nodding slowly. "I deserved that." Then he lay back down.

A few seconds later, Xinyuan opened his eyes, narrowing them silently at Zhiyao’s back. Wenzhi noticed instantly. The Esper hadn’t actually been asleep at all.

"What’s wrong?" Wenzhi handed Xinyuan the half-eaten apple.

Xinyuan took it without a second thought and bit into the exact same spot before pushing himself upright. He leaned heavily into Wenzhi’s personal space, closing the distance until their noses lightly brushed together.

Wenzhi blinked, freezing. "What?"

"I had a bad dream." Xinyuan took another crunch from the apple, his eyes locked onto Wenzhi’s lips.

Wenzhi looked at him flatly, trying to ignore the proximity. "Am I supposed to care about that?" But his gaze still drifted briefly to the apple Xinyuan was already finishing, before rising back to those warm brown eyes.

"Maybe." Xinyuan finally settled back against the wall.

As he ate quietly, his gaze remained fixed on Zhiyao, who clearly wasn’t asleep either despite his closed eyes. Only Yuzhen was truly dead to the world, snoring softly with his long red hair spread out behind him.

"Do you believe them?" Wenzhi finally asked, breaking the silence.

Xinyuan looked back at him. Suddenly, another apple lifted itself from the nearby basket, floating through the dim air until it hovered directly in front of Wenzhi. "I do."

Wenzhi caught the fruit, slowly turning it in his hand. "Do you trust them?"

Xinyuan’s lips twitched into a small, sharp smile. "I do not trust anyone but you, Freckles."

Wenzhi looked at him silently for a long moment, then took a bite of the apple.
",1018,"2026-06-06T14:53:12.659Z",1,"novelbin.me","0e4db8b0759e9d269e1ee5ad4a4b167c7f270db8c1cea5788f451f0ede531ee7","help-i-do-not-want-to-guide-a-disaster-chapter-66","help-i-do-not-want-to-guide-a-disaster-chapter-64",73,"https://novelzhen.com/images/covers/help-i-do-not-want-to-guide-a-disaster-cover.jpg"]
