Chapter 436

~8 min read 1,406 words

Texas.

Fort Hood Military Base.

The shrill air raid alarm echoed in the air, and there were rumbling explosions everywhere. But strangely, as one of the largest armored unit bases in the United States, Fort Hood certainly had field anti-aircraft rockets and automatic anti-aircraft guns and other anti-aircraft weapons, but at this moment, they seemed to be silent, without any sound.

In the underground bunker, a soldier with a gray face ran hurriedly into the moldy temporary command post. As soon as he entered, several officers looked over: "How is it?"

"Sir, areas A7, A8, B4, B6 have been destroyed! The friendly forces near us have almost been wiped out."

"Bang!" A lieutenant colonel smashed his fist on the table: "Fuck!"

Everyone also had a look of having lost their mother. This was truly the most inexplicable and most aggrieved war they had fought since joining the army. The enemy had been in the high sky from beginning to end and could not be seen at all. The arrival was also incredibly sudden. Just when they realized the Soviet Union had declared war and hadn't received orders from their superiors, the first round of air raids came. Thousands of tons of bombs landed precisely on the head of every important building in the base, almost wiping out the weapon depots of two armored divisions in one wave.

Immediately afterward, wireless communication suffered large-scale interference, so much so that they had to contact the outside world via wired telephone. But this point-to-point communication method was too slow for conveying orders, so much so that they hadn't received orders on how to act, and the Pentagon was gone.

They still don't understand how the enemy did it. The soldiers didn't see a single living enemy at all, only bombs continuously descending from the sky and a terrifying, ultra-small tracking aircraft specifically for killing officers. That thing was only the size of a palm and even made of wood, but its speed was very fast, and it was terrifyingly smart. It seemed to be able to discover who the commander was from the crowd and then rush directly in front of the other party to explode.

Under the suppression of the swarm drones, the commanders could only lock themselves in underground bunkers. After several rounds of bombing, they were divided into separate areas holding their ground. Initially, they could still contact via wired telephone, but soon the enemy destroyed the communication stations, and the friendly forces they could contact became fewer and fewer, so much so that by now, it had reached the point where they had to send soldiers with binoculars to observe the situation in each area.

"What to do?" an officer asked, "The soldiers don't know what happened at all now. Most of them don't even have weapons equipped!"

The base had a resident cavalry division, a mechanized infantry division, and a military police brigade. But in a non-war state, even the national war mobilization order hadn't been issued yet, and they were just conducting daily training. Most soldiers didn't hold weapons, and those war machines sufficient to attack cities and seize territories were parked in open-air camps, becoming targets in vain. Hundreds of billions of dollars of equipment became a pile of scrap iron without even seeing the enemy's face.

"Don't think about counterattacking." A colonel sighed, "This kind of Blitzkrieg is unprecedented. I almost thought we were fighting aliens! Their war projection capability and surprise strike capability, as well as their control over the war situation, are simply unimaginable. Fighting us is like fighting a group of primitive natives! This is not an enemy we can deal with. The top priority is to protect the lives of more soldiers!"

"Nathan, is the broadcast station in the camp still there?"

"Still there, sir!"

"Good, Nathan, you go to the broadcast station, convey my orders, let all soldiers defend their ground, try to preserve themselves as much as possible, don't try to fight!"

The soldier was stunned for a moment, but under the colonel's sharp gaze, he still saluted immediately: "Yes, sir!"

But this Nathan had just walked out of the bunker and hadn't moved toward the broadcast station for more than a few meters when a honeycomb drone appeared from nowhere and landed on his head. With a bang, it blew his upper body into minced meat.

An officer saw this scene. Before he could curse, he saw a black cloud in the sky flicker, and suddenly a group surged toward this side. His heart tightened immediately: "They are here! They found us!!"

As soon as he finished speaking, with a bang, the bunker entrance was blown open, and then five or six simple drones, only the size of a palm and looking like children's toys, rushed in. Their wooden bodies were also tied with a grenade.

"Fuck!" Everyone cursed, drawing their guns one after another and shooting wildly at the drones.

Originally, no one had any hope. After all, the drones were too small and were moving objects, making them very difficult to hit.

But their luck seemed to be not bad. A bullet happened to hit the grenade, and that drone, along with two or three companions around it, exploded into pieces. Because there was still some distance, although the fragments caused some wounds to several people, they didn't kill any of them.

Everyone breathed a sigh of relief. However, the next moment, another six or seven drones rushed in from the broken entrance like massive leeches.

"Damn it!"

"Fuck!"

"Oh God..."

They just wanted to fire, but found that the previous wave had emptied their bullets. Seeing that they were about to be blown into minced meat, they were so scared that they almost peed their pants.

However, after waiting for a few seconds, the explosion they imagined did not come.

The colonel opened his eyes and looked, only to see those few drones hovering at the entrance. Before long, they flew out of the bunker one after another, seemingly having left.

Several people didn't know what happened, stunned for a long time, before they had the courage to come to the collapsed entrance to observe outside, only to see drones like flying locusts filling the sky flying out of buildings everywhere like black clouds.

And in mid-air, dozens of large drones shaped like passenger planes hovered in the high sky, their bellies open. Those black clouds condensed into several strands in the air and flew into the bellies one after another, like birds returning to their nests, which was extremely spectacular.

After all the black clouds were "inhaled" by those large drones, they started up one after another and flew toward the north.

"Could it be, they retreated?" someone asked uncertainly.

However, before everyone could feel the joy of surviving a disaster, suddenly the rumbling vibration of the ground made their hearts, which had just relaxed, tighten again.

They looked in the direction of the sound. Suddenly, an officer pointed to the top of a collapsed building in the distance, and something that kept flashing with metallic reflection asked in astonishment: "What is that?!"

The others looked closely, only to be stunned to find that it seemed... to be a person?

But not a real person.

It was something with metal joints and a white plastic shell-like body. It only had a rough humanoid shape. In fact, it was more like a headless big dog standing with bent legs, but its two forearms were like humans, with five fingers. At this moment, the big dog climbed to the top of the building, reached out, and pressed a loudspeaker on the roof.

"Sonorus!"

The next moment, a male voice with a British accent spread throughout the entire base: "All United States soldiers listen, we are the 32nd Mixed Brigade of the Soviet Union. Texas has been taken over by us. You are all prisoners now! Everyone put down your weapons, wait in place, do not make meaningless resistance!"

Before his voice fell, a low wall in the distance was pushed down. In the dust and smoke, the mechanical big dog led the way, continuously following. Behind them followed some fully armed Soviet soldiers.

Looking at those mechanical soldiers like monsters, everyone was in a trance.

"What kind of enemy are we fighting?"

An officer suddenly felt a deep sorrow: "Devils, must be devils!"

"God has abandoned the United States!"
