Chapter 810

~6 min read 1,056 words

This is normal; Filch is not a fool either.

He has lived for decades; it would be strange if he didn't know Darren is being good to him.

That's why I think pleasing him is useless.

It might even make people think he is a utilitarian person.

Did the golden finger make a mistake, or did Darren make a mistake? I thought secretly in my heart.

But I still didn't say anything.

After all, someone with a golden finger shouldn't believe the few words I say.

Furthermore, I am not even sure myself whether the act of pleasing Filch is right or wrong.

Forget it, let him consider it himself.

Even if he did it wrong, I think his golden finger will handle it.

I'd better think about how to deal with it if Conte wants to kill me.

These days, the look in his eyes when he looks at me is becoming more and more vicious.

He doesn't want others to know that he has a sister in Hufflepuff.

Does he think I want others to know that I have a brother in Slytherin?

He wants me dead, and I want him dead too!

After seeing the threatening look in Kante’s eyes once again, I began to prepare to write a letter to Darren Potter.

This was inevitable.

I can guess what Darren Potter’s golden finger is now—a "Good Person System"—and perhaps he really will help me.

What’s more, the two outfits for Christmas really made me unable to keep my guard up.

I kept telling myself that I must be careful of Darren Potter.

But when Kante threatened to kill me, when I was terrified, he was the only one I could think of.

On Halloween.

I started eating again.

I noticed that Darren Potter did not go to the Deathday Party with Harry Potter.

I don’t know what he was planning, but I decided to fill myself up first.

When I had stuffed myself with food until I couldn't eat anymore, I looked up at him slightly and secretly.

His face began to turn pale.

He clutched his stomach, as if he needed to go to the bathroom.

But I wasn't sure if he really needed to go; I only understood that Mrs. Norris was about to be petrified.

The Basilisk was out.

I gripped my wand tightly.

The Water-Mist Charm on my eyes was still firmly in place.

Hannah and I were wearing identical magic glasses.

I hoped these glasses would be useful, or at least serve as a layer of protection.

Being petrified is at least better than being dead.

I thought to myself.

Then I held my wand tightly.

Finally.

The Halloween party ended.

I told Hannah I was sleepy, then followed the main group of Hufflepuffs straight back to the Hufflepuff common room.

I let out a huge sigh of relief.

When I crawled into bed that night, I heard someone screaming in the common room, and someone calling Darren’s name.

I just pretended not to hear it.

I closed my eyes, shivering under the covers for a long while before finally falling asleep.

Early the next morning.

Hannah had already found out what happened yesterday.

"Polly, you have no idea. We went back too early last night; if we had stayed later, we could have seen a huge drama."

"You don't know this, but Darren Potter has been cleaning for Filch lately just to make Filch treat Harry Potter better."

"As a result, Filch thought Darren knew he was a Squib and petrified Mrs. Norris on purpose."

"He even pulled out a knife yesterday, looking like he wanted to kill Darren. Darren didn't fight back, and luckily Dumbledore came to save him."

"It was so thrilling!"

"And then?"

I was worried inside, but I asked foolishly on the surface.

"I don't know what happened after that, but Filch seems to be treating Darren and Harry Potter better now."

"Professor Sprout said that once the Mandrakes are mature, Mrs. Norris can be saved."

Hannah said with a smile.

She even kept telling me that Darren is a good person who gets good rewards.

But is that really the case?

It cannot be denied that Darren did a good deed, but I believe this must have been something he calculated perfectly.

Perhaps from the moment he started doing favors for Filch, he had already calculated this outcome. It really is me who is too stupid.

I actually thought his plan wasn't perfect. And then, in the blink of an eye, I was proven wrong.

But I am not angry.

Because the smarter my partner is, the more likely I am to survive.

Although he might scheme against me, Kante wants to kill me.

I closed my eyes.

I pulled out a piece of parchment and wrote on it with my wand: Kante wants to kill me!

I walked to the Owlery and mailed this note to Darren.

I didn't sign my name.

If Darren really knows my identity, he will understand that it was me who made Kante and the others get Voldemort’s diary.

If he doesn't know my identity, then he can only investigate who wrote it. I have done everything I could; I hope he doesn't find out it was me. Even if he does, I think the fact that Kante wants to kill me is true.

He cannot be certain of anything.

I can only do this.

For the past two days, the way Kante looks at me has been even stranger.

He even wrote a note asking me to go out.

I turned him down using the excuse that I was very busy.

I am not a fool.

I must deal with him.

I originally wanted to wait until Ginny threw the diary away before making a move, but I was startled by Kante’s murderous intent; I must get the diary as soon as possible.

Finally, I waited for an opportunity when Hufflepuff and Gryffindor had a class together.

In order to steal the diary, I pretended to take a nasty fall.

I fell right next to Ginny Weasley.

Ginny is a kind girl.

She instinctively reached out to help me.

People around us gathered.

I sobbed and hugged Ginny.

Then I fished the diary out of her pocket.

Hannah took me from Ginny’s arms.
