Chapter 428: Born Sun

“Before you learn, have you ever studied the origins of the Patronus Charm?”

Professor McGonagall said.

A wizard’s spells are not baseless; those with deeper understanding of magic possess greater magical power.

This fact is so easily observable, yet rarely applied.

Only a few advanced wizards truly grasp it.

If it were another professor, they might already be teaching the incantation—since young wizards rarely realize this, let alone use it—but her child is always different.

Dumbledore was right: such children require special education.

“In the library, I found some woodblock prints; from ancient woodblocks and scrolls, we know the Patronus Charm was used in antiquity.

Thus, no one knows who invented it, or precisely when it first appeared.

But this spell has long been associated with wizards who fought for noble causes—those who could summon a corporeal Patronus were often chosen as high officials in the Wizengamot and the Ministry of Magic.”

Wizard Sean Green recalled the knowledge in his mind.

He did not recite the book verbatim; instead, he offered his own insights and summary.

“An unexpected answer.”

Professor McGonagall paused, then smiled with satisfaction.

“Have you heard the story of Lachdion?”

She lifted a cup of black tea; steam curled up to veil her eyes.

“Yes, Professor. Legend says Lachdion was a Dark Wizard who believed the witch Elliana would be his ideal wife, so he wrote to her parents, asking for their support in the marriage.

But Elliana’s parents refused him. Lachdion threatened to send Dementors to destroy the village unless they gave her to him.

The villagers decided to resist bravely, and battle erupted.

The villagers’ Patronuses—bears, wolves, boars—held back the endless Dementor assaults, but gradually they were overwhelmed. The Patronuses weakened, and the casters either broke down or fled.

At the last moment, a shy young orphan stepped forward.

He had not joined the fight, because the village elders believed his Patronus was too weak to be useful.

But when his rat Patronus shot from his wand, it repelled every single Dementor…”

As he spoke, Wizard Sean Green seemed to understand.

These were stories written in The Book of Spells, a practical volume with a purple cover and gold trim.

Wizard Sean Green had memorized the entire book.

“The power of a Patronus has nothing to do with its form; it comes solely from the wizard’s inner strength. Always remember this, child.”

Professor McGonagall said with satisfaction,

“Take a sip of pumpkin juice, then continue.”

Wizard Sean Green picked up the pumpkin juice beside the silver cat figurine and sipped.

He knew Professor McGonagall disliked such sweets, but somehow, candies and juices had appeared on the table.

“So Lachdion, enraged, decided to join the battle himself.

He tried to summon his own Patronus to counter Ellias’s rat Patronus.

But he forgot: only the purest heart can summon a Patronus.

Thus, for the first time, people witnessed the result of a wizard unfit to cast the Patronus Charm:

Maggots erupted from Lachdion’s wand and swiftly devoured his body.”

When Wizard Sean finished, he fell into thought.

“This is actually a misconception.

Many wizards with negative traits can still summon a mature Patronus; yet when Dark Wizards use this charm, most are consumed by the maggots that erupt from their wands.

That is why Dark Wizards find it so hard to learn the Patronus Charm—though, of course, they don’t need it anyway.”

Professor McGonagall said slowly.

For a long time, very few Dark Wizards could cast the Patronus Charm.

And Wizard Sean Green knew that among the Death Eaters, only Professor Snape could.

“Love redeems, child.

That is the source of the Patronus Charm’s power: to cast it successfully, the wizard must concentrate on the happiest memory they can recall.

The more intense the joy from the memory, the stronger the spell.”

Professor McGonagall’s voice was low and powerful,

“Are you ready to learn the incantation?”

Wizard Sean Green nodded quickly.

“Focus on your memory. The incantation is—” Professor McGonagall raised her wand, “Expecto Patronum!”

A silver cat appeared again.

The happiest memory…

Wizard Sean Green recalled.

What was it?

The moment he escaped death? The moment the owl smashed through the window? Or the moment he fled the orphanage?

“Expecto Patronum,” Wizard Sean repeated silently. “Expecto Patronum!”

Nothing happened.

Wizard Sean stopped chanting and ceased the wand motion.

These memories were profound, yet they brought no intense joy.

He was not a wizard who dwelled on past suffering.

Then what was a good memory?

Minerva McGonagall did not interrupt his recollection; she stood quietly beside him, the silver cat long gone.

Or perhaps, still here.

During his first Herbology lesson… when he brewed his first successful potion… when he received his Christmas gift…

“Expecto Patronum!”

Wizard Sean cried out.

A silver-white mist or smoke burst from his wand—no animal shape, no defined form.

“A non-corporeal Patronus—excellent!”

Professor McGonagall praised.

Casting the Patronus Charm is a strange experience: the wizard recalls past memories.

When Harry learned, he recalled vague memories of his parents.

Now, in Wizard Sean’s mind, his past unfolded like a projector.

A special, exceptionally joyful memory…

Did he have such a memory? One strong enough to summon a powerful Patronus? Did he?

Of course he did.

White mist enveloped his consciousness… he recalled a warm sensation, once emanating from the witch before him.

“Expecto Patronum!”

He swung his wand, tracing a circle.

A silver-white cat gradually formed—but something was still missing.

Finally, his memory fixed on a gray-and-white photograph: the school infirmary bathed in moonlight, and Professor Quirrell’s tear-streaked face.

“Expecto Patronum!”

He whispered it silently.

This time, the silver-white cat leapt forth.

Minerva McGonagall was momentarily stunned; Wizard Sean thought:

The Patronus Charm doesn’t seem that difficult.

Outside the door.

The old wizard with long, white beard withdrew his gaze in satisfaction and turned away.

In those eyes, he saw little—only one thing: a sun born of nature.

Adjust the pace; take a day off
