Chapter 92: Magic Charm Study Plan

Sunday.

In the classroom.

Seán heard the bells of Hogwarts ring, and he naturally closed his notes and picked up the Firebolt 2000.

He knew the flying test had begun. Though his flying proficiency had already reached Skilled, it stood alongside the Expert-level Levitation Charm and Skilled-level Transfiguration as his highest-ranked magic.

Yet he still felt a flicker of nervousness—after all, he had only one chance.

He had been at Hogwarts for a long time, and he had made progress in every magical discipline.

Skilled-level Transfiguration, one Expert-level charm, five Beginner-level charms, and the Stopspell he was about to learn.

For safety, Seán planned to push Stopspell directly to Expert level.

As for longer-term goals like the Shield Charm or Apparition, Seán didn’t think Professor Flitwick would teach them to him so soon.

Moreover, his charm title was still Beginner, so he was preparing to select three charms to push to Expert level—under the new title’s boost, he expected to learn difficult charms much faster.

Transfiguration, his specialty, was also not far from Expert level.

So Seán opened his panel:

Seán thought,

Aside from Stopspell, he needed one more charm.

He pondered for a few seconds: he already had offensive capability—Transfiguration—and after learning Stopspell, he would have defense. Learning some concealment magic, like the Disillusionment Charm, might be wise.

He hadn’t checked his panel in a while, so he scrolled down further:

It was a world apart from before he entered Hogwarts.

Sunday afternoon, clear and cold.

Seán carried his Firebolt 2000 to the changing room to change clothes,

though it was just the school uniform—he had no other warm clothing anyway.

Meanwhile, in the changing room, Harry and the other team members were putting on their bright red Quidditch robes.

Seán heard a familiar voice again:

It was Wood, clearing his throat to quiet everyone.

“Alright, boys.”

he said.

“And girls.”

A clear female voice said.

“And girls.”

Wood agreed,

“It’s time.”

“We’re about to begin important training.”

Another voice spoke—Seán looked past the fluttering curtain and saw Fred Weasley.

“Every practice is for the moment we’ve all been waiting for.”

George picked up the thread.

“We’ve heard Oliver’s speech so many times,”

Fred and George said together to the bewildered Harry,

“we were on the team last year.”

“Shut up, both of you.”

Wood said,

“This is the best team Gryffindor has had in years—we must train seriously for the best chance!”

He glared at them all, as if to say: “You haven’t seen anything yet.”

“We know.”

Fred lowered his voice, whispering to Harry as Wood turned his head,

“Harry, you’re the best Seeker right now.”

“No young wizard is better than you.”

That was George speaking.

“You’ve got the brand-new Firebolt 2000—Merlin, you’re the only one in the whole school with it.”

Then Fred spoke, gazing enviously at Harry’s broom, making Harry blush.

“Alright, now pay attention to the tactics—once that young wizard’s flying test is over, it’s our turn!”

Hearing them, Seán quietly quickened his pace.

Madam Hooch was already waiting for him on the Quidditch pitch; she pulled out an iron ball and said to Seán:

“The test is simple: catch the Quaffles and dodge the Bludgers. You have fifteen minutes. Catch three Quaffles and avoid all Bludgers to pass…”

She delivered the rules crisply, then studied Seán and softened her tone slightly:

“Don’t be afraid of getting hit—I’ll be watching you, but if I actually intervene, your test fails! Now, Mr. Green, what are you waiting for? Get on your broom and warm up with two laps!”

Seán suppressed his nervousness and mounted the broom with quiet excitement.

As his feet left the ground, he instantly calmed down—he flew two laps around the pitch, then executed a few simple turns with the broomstick.

As he flew smoothly, two furtive figures appeared on the stands.

“Jia Jia Siting, are you sure it’s this time?”

Hermione scanned the area but found no young wizard—only a few blurred shapes flying back and forth on the pitch—the Quidditch field hadn’t been cleared yet.

“I see Seán!”

Jia Jia Siting shouted.

Hermione squinted—only a faint shadow, moving too fast.

Jia Jia Siting handed Hermione a pair of binoculars; this time she clearly saw Seán’s face.

“How did you see him so clearly?”

“Still, do you have another pair of binoculars…?”

Before she finished speaking, Jia Jia Siting waved his binoculars:

“Exactly two—Mother always thinks ahead.”

“Alright, Mr. Green!”

Seán saw Madam Hooch waving vigorously,

“Watch closely—I’m releasing the Bludgers now. Just like we practiced—dodge them!”

Seán saw Madam Hooch toss the ball high—it shot toward him with a whistle.

The Bludger is a magically enchanted ball; in Quidditch, it attacks any player it encounters, without discrimination.

Once made of stone, these spherical rocks had one major flaw:

they could be shattered by the powerful magical bats of fifteenth-century Beaters. When that happened, all players in the match were then pursued by flying shards of stone.

Agatha Chab, an expert in ancient magical artifacts, wrote:

“Undoubtedly, they are Bludgers—they should not be projectiles.”

Left unchecked, they would attack the nearest Quidditch player, which is why Beaters emerged—their job was to knock the Bludgers as far away from their own team as possible.

Seán clearly had no Beater.
