Chapter 148: Confrontation
Just as they were chatting, Professor Moody suddenly appeared.
He leaned on his cane and limped toward them.
"Merrick, come with me."
He shouted directly at John, then walked toward the entrance of the Great Hall without looking back.
John and the others were stunned; why was he suddenly looking for John alone for no reason?
But John didn't delay, patted his pants, stood up, and said to them.
"I'll go see what Professor Moody wants with me first."
"Mm, go ahead."
Hermione waved her hand; although Professor Moody was a bit crazy usually, at least he wouldn't make things difficult for students, so they didn't take it too much to heart.
Soon John caught up with Professor Moody's pace.
Professor Moody didn't look at him and continued to lead the way in front.
"Professor, what do you want with me?"
Seeing that Professor Moody didn't intend to speak at all, John took the initiative to ask.
"Dumbledore wants to see you."
"Karkaroff has already confessed; it was indeed him who tampered with the Goblet of Fire that day."
Professor Moody still didn't look back and said coldly.
?
John was stunned for a moment; what confessed what?
But he immediately regained his senses; he must be talking about what happened on the day of the Triwizard Tournament registration.
That day, John saw a person with gray-blue eyes sneakily tampering with the Goblet of Fire.
Then after he reported this to Dumbledore, Moody suspected Karkaroff.
"So it really was Karkaroff who signed Harry up?"
John immediately asked curiously.
But Professor Moody suddenly stopped.
He turned his head and stared at John with that magic eye, as if he wanted to see through John.
"No."
After a long while, Professor Moody spat out one word coldly.
"Ah?"
If it wasn't, then why are you telling me this?
"Karkaroff did indeed tamper with the Goblet of Fire."
"But he only did it so that Krum from their school could be successfully selected; he didn't sign anyone up at all."
Professor Moody continued to say coldly, but his words gradually made John confused.
Since it wasn't Karkaroff who signed Harry up, it proved that the mastermind was someone else, and they suspected the wrong person.
Then you guys just continue to investigate; why call me out alone to say this?
Until Professor Moody's next sentence came out.
"And that day, he also happened to run into a sneaky figure who was tampering with the Goblet of Fire, and even threw two slips of paper into it one after another."
"That person, coincidentally, looks a bit like you, Merrick."
Once this was said, John immediately understood that someone was framing him, and Professor Moody was suspecting him.
Some time ago, he was targeted by Professor Moody because of the two souls in his body, and now this happened again; no wonder Moody would bring him out alone for a confrontation.
John was speechless for a moment.
"So, is it my turn to be the suspect now?"
Moody looked at John coldly without speaking.
Not to mention anything else, just John's reaction at this moment was worth suspecting.
A second-year little wizard, facing him and this kind of suspicion, could actually be so calm.
It didn't look like a second-year child at all.
John was too lazy to care what was in Moody's mind and continued to ask.
"But this isn't right, is it? If Karkaroff saw me tampering with the Goblet of Fire that day, then why didn't he expose me directly when Harry was selected?"
"Very simple, because tampering with the Goblet of Fire and subverting the will of the Goblet of Fire is a serious violation of the rules."
Moody continued to say faintly.
"He didn't want to expose himself, so he also chose to remain silent."
Hearing these words, John nodded; that was reasonable.
His brain started to turn.
Why would someone specifically disguise themselves as me to commit the crime?
Obviously, the sneaky person I ran into that day wasn't Karkaroff, but the real mastermind.
To prevent his identity from being discovered, he deliberately disguised himself as me and let himself be discovered when Karkaroff went to tamper with the Goblet of Fire.
In this way, the only people currently known to have tampered with the Goblet of Fire are me and Karkaroff.
The chain of suspicion will also be locked on the two of us; after all, we have both "seen" each other.
Even if I can clear my suspicion in the end, it is enough to create enough chaos and opposition.
Successfully delaying time for the mastermind.
It just so happens that I have inexplicable doubts on me, two souls; no matter how you think about it, there is a problem.
Hard to handle.
Should have known not to report it.
Could have saved them from investigating Karkaroff and dragging myself into the water.
John scratched his head, not that he had much of a headache.
An upright person doesn't fear a crooked shadow; it's easy to disguise as him to commit a crime, but some details definitely cannot be fully replicated.
After confronting Karkaroff face to face, flaws will definitely be found.
As for the problems on his own body, to be honest, he didn't know either, so he could only play dumb.
Professor Moody didn't say anything more and continued to lead the way in front; this matter definitely wouldn't be left to Moody alone, he just came to bring John to the Headmaster's office.
Soon they arrived at the Headmaster's office all the way.
The office door opened slowly, Dumbledore sat behind the desk, Karkaroff was standing on the side with a gloomy face.
Professor McGonagall and Professor Snape were also standing on the side.
As soon as he saw John arrive, Karkaroff pointed at him fiercely.
"It's him, I saw him with my own eyes tampering with the Goblet of Fire that day!"
"The reason why you Hogwarts have two warriors must be because he tampered with it!"
Before Dumbledore could speak, Karkaroff started accusing him.
Professor McGonagall slowly came to John's side and said to Karkaroff.
"Mr. Karkaroff, there is currently no direct evidence to prove that John is the one who tampered with it; we cannot draw conclusions based on one person's words alone."
In the wizarding world, disguising as a person is not a rare means; Polyjuice Potion is enough to make anyone transform into another person's appearance.
So they actually considered that John might have been framed.
It's just that Professor Moody had a personal prejudice against John.
Dumbledore's gaze swept slowly across everyone's faces, finally landing on John.
"John," Dumbledore said slowly, his voice gentle, "do you have anything you want to say?"
John looked at Professor McGonagall, smiled at her, signaling her not to worry.
Then he looked at Karkaroff and spoke slowly.
"Mr. Karkaroff, you said you saw me tampering with the Goblet of Fire, then I have two questions."
"First, what time was it when you saw me?"
"Second, what style of wand was I holding when you saw me, and what was the grip?" ===== CHAPTER 149 =====
