Chapter 149: The Birth of Xiang Yang
Xiang Fei paced back and forth outside the delivery room, his fingers tapping the wall nonstop. Han Shanping patted his shoulder: "A-Fei, sit down and wait. You pacing like this is making me dizzy."
"Uncle Han, I can't sit still." Xiang Fei wiped the sweat from his forehead. "It's been three hours already."
Xiang Fei was about to keep talking when a burst of hurried footsteps suddenly came from the end of the corridor.
"A-Fei!"
Zhang Guorong jogged over, and Xiang Fei greeted him in surprise: "Brother Rong? How come you're here?"
"I heard halfway through filming that Huimin had gone into the delivery room," Zhang Guorong wiped his sweat. "How could we not come for something this big?"
Xiang Fei shook his head and was about to speak when the elevator doors opened again. Xiang Tai came over with Xiang Fei's adoptive mother Dong Xiaolan and Xiang Yan and Zhou Mu.
"Aunt? Mom?" Xiang Fei's eyes went wide. "How did you..."
Xiang Tai walked over quickly: "We heard A-Min was about to give birth and insisted on coming."
Xiang Fei's adoptive mother Dong Xiaolan tremblingly took his hand: "A-Fei, how is A-Min doing?"
Xiang Fei quickly steadied his adoptive mother: "Mom, she's still inside. The doctor said the baby's position is perfect, should be no problem."
Zhou Mu's eyes reddened: "This child has been afraid of pain since she was little..."
Seeing this, Zhang Guorong quietly pulled Chen Kaige aside: "Let's go buy everyone something to eat."
Time ticked by second by second. Xiang Fei sat on the bench, hands clasped tight. Xiang Tai handed him a cup of hot tea: "Have some water, don't be too nervous."
"Aunt," Xiang Fei's voice went hoarse, "I've heard giving birth can be very dangerous..."
"Pah, pah, pah!" Dong Xiaolan quickly cut him off. "Don't say anything unlucky! A-Min is blessed with great fortune, she'll be just fine."
Zhou Mu suddenly stood up: "Listen!"
Everyone held their breath, faintly hearing the baby's loud cry coming from the delivery room.
"She's given birth!" Xiang Fei shot to his feet.
The delivery room door opened, and a nurse walked out holding a swaddled bundle: "Congratulations, it's a boy. Mother and child are safe!"
Xiang Fei's legs went weak and he nearly dropped to his knees, but Zhang Guorong caught him in time. Trembling, he took the baby. The little face in the swaddle was all wrinkled, yet it instantly reddened his eyes.
"Let me see!" Dong Xiaolan eagerly leaned over. "Oh my, that nose looks just like A-Fei when he was little!"
Zhou Mu wiped her tears: "The eyes look like Huimin..."
Just then, the delivery room door opened again, and the nurse wheeled out the hospital bed. Zhou Huimin's face was pale, the wisps of hair on her forehead soaked with sweat.
Xiang Fei quickly handed the baby to his mother and rushed to the bedside to grip his wife's hand: "Huimin, you worked so hard..."
Zhou Huimin gave a weak smile, but tears streamed down: "The baby... is he healthy?"
"Healthy! Very healthy!" Xiang Fei's voice choked. "Seven jin and six liang. The nurse said his cry was really loud."
Zhang Guorong secretly wiped his tears on the side, and Chen Kaige patted his shoulder: "This sentimental?"
"What do you know," Zhang Guorong glared at him. "This is a new life!"
The nurse placed the baby beside Zhou Huimin. The little fellow opened his bright dark eyes, curiously taking in the world.
Xiang Yan carefully set a gold lock on the baby's swaddle: "This is the Xiang family's heirloom longevity lock, to bless the child with a safe and healthy life."
Dong Xiaolan pulled out a red envelope and tucked it under the pillow: "This is Grandma's token of love."
Zhou Mu refused to be outdone and also took out a plump red envelope: "Grandma on the other side has one too!"
Zhou Huimin was amused into laughing: "Mom, don't spoil the child."
"He should be spoiled!" Xiang Yan rarely spoke up. "He's the Xiang family's eldest grandson, of course he deserves the best."
Zhang Guorong leaned in to look at the baby: "Have you named him yet?"
Xiang Fei and Zhou Huimin exchanged a glance. Zhou Huimin said softly: "Xiang Yang, nickname Yangyang."
"Xiang Yang..." Zhang Guorong repeated softly. "Good name, full of hope."
The nurse came in to remind them: "Visiting hours are over, the mother needs rest."
Only then did everyone reluctantly prepare to leave. Xiang Fei walked them to the door, and Zhang Guorong suddenly turned and hugged him: "A-Fei, congratulations on becoming a father."
Xiang Fei hugged him back tightly: "Thank you, brother."
Han Shanping also came over for a hug: "If you need anything, just say the word."
After seeing everyone off, Xiang Fei returned to the ward. Zhou Huimin had already fallen asleep, and Yangyang was sleeping soundly in the crook of her arm.
Xiang Fei sat gently by the bed, looking at the two most important people in his life, and suddenly felt this was the happiest moment of all.
He leaned down and placed a light kiss on his wife's forehead, then gently touched his son's little face with his finger, and said softly: "Daddy will protect you both."
Outside the window, the first ray of morning light pierced through the clouds and shone into the ward, gilding this warm scene with a golden halo.
