Chapter 111: Da Dou's Arrangement
"Li Li, go call Da Dou over."
Chen Mo had decided to let Da Dou study under Lu Bin Sun, but he hadn't mentioned this to Da Dou yet.
Da Dou had put in a lot of effort and suffered no light injuries to secure his current position. Chen Mo worried that directly asking Da Dou to give up the position would breed resentment in him.
Da Dou spent most of his time at the mahjong parlor on Nüren Jie, so he came over quickly.
"Mo Ge, you were looking for me?"
"Come sit." Chen Mo sat down on the sofa and waved Da Dou over. "How are the injuries from last time? No lingering effects, I hope?"
"All healed up. After resting for so long, I'm even stronger than before."
Da Dou sat on the sofa, puffed out his chest, and thumped it with his hand, producing a loud drumming sound.
"Alright, stop hitting yourself." Chen Mo laughed. "Be careful or you'll beat yourself into serious injury."
"The reason I called you here is to ask if you'd be interested in doing legitimate work."
"Huh?" Da Dou was startled.
"Mo Ge, did I do something wrong? Tell me and I'll fix it, just don't drive me away!"
Hearing Chen Mo's words, Da Dou instantly grew nervous, his heart filled with anxiety.
"What are you thinking? I'm not driving you away, don't worry."
Seeing Da Dou's reaction, Chen Mo knew he had misunderstood.
"My legitimate businesses need people too. I'm planning to send you over."
Da Dou finally felt relieved, but still asked cautiously, "Mo Ge, can I not go?"
He had only just gained a foothold under Chen Mo not long ago. Being asked to do legitimate business now left him somewhat unwilling.
"Da Dou, among all the underlings under me, aside from those dozen or so who've been with me for several years, you're considered one of the earlier ones to join me."
"I won't sugarcoat it with you. With your skills and temperament, even if you mix in the Triad Society for a dozen-plus years, becoming a big shot would be the ceiling."
"I believe you yourself should be clear on this point."
"Mm." Da Dou nodded, somewhat downcast.
Da Dou had already noticed lately that there was no shortage of talent among Chen Mo's underlings now.
Among the leaders big and small under Chen Mo, whether it was the Tianyang brothers or A Long, A Hu, and Ahua who had only recently been promoted, all were fierce characters who dared to fight and risk it all.
Even though he had established his prestige through the battle where he hacked Chang Yi Nineteen to death, in terms of ability, he still fell a bit short compared to those people.
"You should know Jimi. I pay him a salary of ten thousand dollars a month now, plus year-end dividends. Based on his current performance, his year-end dividend will be at least a million, maybe even several million."
"Isn't that more promising than mixing in the Triad Society?"
"But Mo Ge, I didn't even finish middle school. I've been running the streets since I was a kid. I don't know how to do legitimate work!"
Da Dou still felt uncertain inside.
To say he wasn't envious of Jimi's treatment would be a lie.
But he knew full well how much he himself weighed.
He currently managed the mahjong parlor and had an income of tens of thousands of dollars a month, but doing legitimate work meant an uncertain future.
Chen Mo pushed a file on Lu Bin Sun in front of Da Dou.
"This man is called Lu Bin Sun. He used to be a very successful businessman. A few days ago I got him out of Chi Zhu, and from now on he'll be working for me."
"I plan to have both you and Jimi study under him for a few years. With your brains, you should be able to learn quite a lot."
"Besides, this old man's daughter was killed before. He has no children now. If you can acknowledge him as your godfather and look after him until the end of his days, your future for the rest of your life will be secured."
Da Dou looked through Lu Bin Sun's file, feeling a faint excitement in his heart.
If it really was as Chen Mo said, his future wouldn't just be secured—it would be wide open.
Even if he couldn't become a godson, just being mentored for a few years by someone like Lu Bin Sun would be enough to benefit him for a lifetime.
Even if he only made something modest of himself in legitimate work later on, it would still be better than mixing in the Triad Society.
At least he wouldn't have to worry about being hacked to death in the street one day.
Everyone knew that mixing in the Triad Society meant one foot in prison and one foot in hell.
The more he thought about it, the more excited he became. Da Dou dropped to his knees in front of Chen Mo and kowtowed heavily. "Thank you, Mo Ge. I'll study hard and definitely won't let you down."
Chen Mo quickly helped Da Dou up, looking speechless. "Alright, no need for such a grand gesture. Save that head of yours for kowtowing when you acknowledge your godfather!"
"Mo Ge, then what about the mahjong parlor?"
"I'll arrange someone to take over tomorrow."
By rights, the mahjong parlor should have been handed over to Da Dou's underling, but Chen Mo planned to let Fei Ji take over.
He no longer really needed Fei Ji to stick around as his driver.
He could drive himself, and trivial matters were directly handed over to Li Li to handle.
Fei Ji had been idle lately.
Fei Ji had been by his side for several months. Though he had improved quite a bit, the progress was honestly limited.
Being around Chen Mo, all he needed to do was follow orders—he didn't need to use his brain.
Although Chen Mo had discussed many things with him, he could only be said to have listened.
How much he had actually learned, Fei Ji himself didn't know either.
The mahjong parlor happened to be a mixed bag of people. Whether underlings or customers, every single one of them had plenty of cunning.
Sending Fei Ji there to gain some experience was just right.
Besides, Chen Mo didn't value the mahjong parlor's business all that much. Even if Fei Ji messed it up, it wouldn't be a big deal.
If Fei Ji could make some progress at the mahjong parlor, then he'd count as rare talent.
The next day, on the way as Fei Ji drove Chen Mo to the bar, Chen Mo asked, "Fei Ji, are you interested in being a big brother?"
"Huh?" Fei Ji didn't react for a moment.
"I'm preparing to arrange for Da Dou to go into legitimate work; his mahjong hall will be handed over to someone else. Are you interested?"
"Yes, yes, thank you, Mo Ge!"
Fei Ji joined the Triad Society just to make a name for himself.
Although being Chen Mo's driver carries high status, it can't compare to the swagger of leading your own little brothers.
Upon hearing Chen Mo let him take over Da Dou's position, Fei Ji's mouth couldn't stop grinning.
When you get to the bar, go and hand over with Da Dou; if there's anything you don't understand about the mahjong hall, you can first ask Da Dou. Once you become the boss, you'll have to learn to make your own decisions.
Chen Mo wasn't worried at all that Fei Ji wouldn't be able to win over Da Dou's current underlings.
Fei Ji was already better at fighting than ordinary lackeys, and with the knife technique Chen Mo taught him, his performance in the few times he'd slashed people had been quite impressive.
If even this he still can't win over that mahjong hall crew, it can only mean Fei Ji isn't cut out to be a big brother.
"Mo Ge, who will drive the car from now on?"
"You've got a conscience, at least you thought to ask. I'll drive it myself for now; I'm not unable to drive."
After arriving at the bar, Fei Ji parked the car and then rushed over to the mahjong hall, unable to wait.
Chen Mo had just sat down in his office not long ago, about to tease his female secretary, when a lackey came knocking on the door.
"Mo Ge, there's a madam downstairs looking for you; do you want her to come up?"
"'Madam?' Chen Mo released Li Li from his embrace, looking puzzled."
"He doesn't know any madam!"
"Let her come in!"
