Chapter 67: Misunderstanding

~7 min read 1,383 words

By the afternoon, Chen Mo offered to pick up He Min at school and bring her to class.

As a private English school, most of the students at Edinburgh came from wealthy or prominent families.

Even the ordinary students came from fairly well-off families.

Many luxury cars of all kinds were parked at the school gate, so Chen Mo's Crown wasn't particularly conspicuous here.

Chen Mo had originally wanted to take a stroll inside the school to see if he could spot that pretty young girl, Cindy.

But before he even entered the school gate, someone stopped him.

"Young man, are you a teacher here or a student's parent?"

Chen Mo took a look — wasn't this Cao Dahua, the 'Tiger of the Major Crimes Unit'?

Cao Dahua had a wooden stick clamped between his teeth, wore a school janitor's uniform, and leaned against the gate, extending his hand to block Chen Mo's way.

Chen Mo stopped and said with a smile, "Neither. I'm just here to find someone."

"Then you can't go in. The school prohibits outsiders from entering freely.

School will be out soon, so just wait at the gate!"

Chen Mo didn't absolutely need to go in, so he didn't make an issue of it with Cao Dahua. Instead, he took out a cigarette and offered one to Cao Dahua.

"Want one?"

"No thanks, I'm quitting smoking!" Cao Dahua held the wooden stick in his teeth with two fingers and gestured at Chen Mo.

"Sure you don't?" Chen Mo lit one himself and leisurely blew a smoke ring.

People who are quitting smoking can't stand it most when someone smokes in front of them.

Chen Mo had barely taken a couple puffs before Cao Dahua couldn't hold back anymore.

"Give me one after all."

Chen Mo handed Cao Dahua another cigarette with a wicked grin — so much for his resolve!

Cao Dahua took the cigarette and lit it deftly.

"No one offers a favor for nothing — you're either after something shady or trying to pull something. What do you want?

Let me tell you upfront, letting you in is definitely out of the question."

Chen Mo leaned close to Cao Dahua's ear and said in a low voice, "Don't worry, I just want to ask you about Teacher He Min's situation.

Does Teacher He Min have any suitors at school?"

Hearing this, Cao Dahua put on a look of sudden realization: "Oh~ so you're one of Teacher He's suitors! Then you're in trouble — Teacher He has a lot of suitors. But so far no one has managed to win Teacher He over; she's rejected them all."

"Is that so? How about this — from now on, you keep an eye out for me. If anyone else pursues Teacher He, how about you let me know?"

Chen Mo stuffed the entire pack of cigarettes into Cao Dahua's pocket, then pulled out a thousand-dollar bill and tucked it in as well.

Cao Dahua's face broke into a beaming smile.

"Don't worry, I'll keep an eye out for you at school. Tailing people is what I'm best at.

Young man, you've got a bright future. I'm rooting for you."

Soon, the dismissal bell rang, and the students filed out in an orderly stream.

Chen Mo spotted He Min's figure in the crowd and called out, "Teacher He, over here!"

He Min looked toward the voice and was quite surprised to see Chen Mo.

Reaching the gate, He Min asked, "Mr. Chen, why are you here?"

"I happened to have time today, so I came to pick you up."

"Sorry for the trouble, Mr. Chen. Actually, I could have gone by myself."

"What trouble? I just happened to have free time, that's all."

Just as the two were about to get in the car, a female teacher walked past them and greeted He Min: "A-Min, is this your boyfriend? He's so handsome — no wonder you've turned down so many people chasing you."

"Ah... this is......"

He Min was about to explain, but Chen Mo interrupted her with a smile: "Hello, my name is Chen Mo. I'm here to take A-Min home."

"Hello, I'm A-Min's colleague. My name is Li Li." Li Li waved warmly at Chen Mo. "A-Min is the prettiest teacher at our school, and she has a lot of suitors. You'd better treat her well."

"Of course," Chen Mo said with a nod and a smile. "We're a bit pressed for time today, so we'll be going now!"

With that, Chen Mo turned to He Min and said, "Teacher He, hurry up and get in the car?" (Why do I always feel like I'm calling He Jiong?)

"No, that's not—" He Min wanted to say something more, but was once again interrupted by Li Li.

"No need to explain, I understand. I won't tell anyone else. Go on!"

Li Li turned and walked away, leaving He Min standing there with a dumbfounded look, anxious and alone.

Chen Mo held back his laughter and said to He Min again, "Teacher He, you'd better get in the car first!"

He Min stomped her foot in frustration, but not knowing what to say, she had no choice but to get in the car.

"Mr. Chen, why did you pretend to be my boyfriend!"

Sitting in the passenger seat, He Min grew angrier the more she thought about it and couldn't help demanding an explanation.

Chen Mo immediately retorted, "Teacher He, I never once admitted to being your boyfriend from start to finish. Your colleague jumped to that conclusion on her own."

"But you clearly just now......."

"Clearly what? I never said I was your boyfriend.

And every single thing I said was true — not a word of it was false.

As for your colleague's misunderstanding, that's her business. You can't very well blame me for that, can you?"

"Ugh! This is so frustrating!" He Min was rendered speechless by Chen Mo's twisted logic.

She knew Li Li's personality — by tomorrow, the entire school would probably know she had a boyfriend.

Seeing He Min sulking, Chen Mo joked, "Teacher He, if someone mistakenly thinks you found a boyfriend like me, you should be proud!

Is a boyfriend like me really that embarrassing to show off?"

"Not... or... sigh!" He Min didn't know what to say all of a sudden.

Saying Chen Mo isn't presentable? That clearly doesn't match the facts.

Chen Mo as a boyfriend is indeed very presentable.

But if you say Chen Mo is presentable, it seems a bit ambiguous.

Chen Mo already has two girlfriends, and she doesn't want to be the third.

"Forget it, I'll explain to her tomorrow!" He Min said helplessly.

"Exactly, just clear up any misunderstanding later, no need to worry about it."

Going too far is as bad as not going far enough; Chen Mo also stopped teasing He Min, though he secretly laughed inside.

Li Li delivered a great assist.

He Min wanted to explain to Li Li tomorrow, but whether she could explain clearly was uncertain.

As long as Chen Mo goes to school to pick up He Min a few more times, by then He Min's explanations would be useless.

When they arrived at Chen Mo's home, Gang Sheng and Qiu Di clearly saw that He Min's mood was a bit low, and they hurried over to show concern.

"Ah Min, what's wrong? Did Mo Ge make you unhappy?"

They instinctively thought maybe Chen Mo had done something bad.

"Nothing much, just some misunderstanding, it has nothing to do with Mr. Chen." He Min took a deep breath, adjusted her emotions, and explained, "Let's just go to class."

"Alright, let's go to class first."

Upon hearing He Min say it had nothing to do with Chen Mo, the two stopped questioning and pulled He Min upstairs.

As the few women went to class, Chen Mo thought it over and decided to first prepare dinner.

Chen Mo directly took out his phone, called the restaurant, and asked them to deliver a few dishes to his home in two hours.

Although there was no food delivery in this era, for someone like Chen Mo, having the restaurant deliver dishes to his home, the restaurant would neither refuse nor dare to refuse.
