Chapter 132: Only the Night is Eternal
"Stupid old man, why are you acting all cool for no reason?"
Hearing Edward's words, Lita turned her head away, blushing for some inexplicable reason, and muttered.
"Hahaha, this isn't acting cool." Edward chuckled, a large, rough hand covering the top of Lita's head, and said: "This is a promise."
He paused, his voice suddenly becoming somewhat Soft, and said: "No matter when, if you encounter difficulties, remember to find your old man."
"Geez, why are you suddenly saying things like that?!"
"There are people watching nearby!"
Hearing his words, Lita's face instantly flushed red.
"Ahem."
Just at this moment, Brenna gave a light cough, interrupting the interaction between the two, and said: "The people from the Church have already left, let's hurry and follow them."
After she finished saying this, she immediately turned around.
No one noticed that a trace of envy flashed in her eyes.
"My lords, it is right here."
Molike, bringing Meiyin, the Night Watchman, and four Night Walkers, arrived at a street not far from the factory where he worked.
"Ugh, it stinks."
The Night Watchman pinched his nose and waved his hand in disgust, trying to disperse the stench in front of him.
However, doing this clearly had no effect at all.
Not only did the stench not dissipate, but it actually had a tendency to grow even more intense.
"This is..."
Meiyin walked forward two steps; beneath their feet was a dilapidated stone arch bridge, and beneath the arch bridge was a pitch-black creek.
The stench was emanating from this very creek, and on the slopes on both sides of the creek, one could clearly see traces of someone pouring sewage into it.
There were even a few shriveled, pitch-black lumps, resembling chocolate-like substances, gathered together.
And on the opposite side of the arch bridge, that is, by the side of the creek.
There were several crude adobe houses covered, as well as a gravel road that was already in ruins and covered in trash everywhere.
Meiyin looked at everything before her, a look of reminiscence flashing in her eyes; she looked at Molike and asked: "How did this creek become like this?"
"Wasn't it very clear before?"
"My lady, have you been here before?" Hearing Meiyin's words, Molike said with some surprise.
He thought for a moment and replied: "It has been many years since this creek was clear; ever since the factory expanded to this side and kept discharging sewage from upstream, it has become increasingly stinky."
"You used to be able to see some fish and shrimp, but now, besides the stench, there is nothing left but pitch-black sewage."
"Is that so..." Meiyin's expression suddenly became somewhat dejected.
She shook her head, then looked at Molike and said: "Where exactly did you see the blood-red mist?"
"Right here, my lady." Molike hesitated for a moment and replied: "I usually live in this housing area; that day when I got off work and went home, I happened to see the blood-red mist shrouding the entire housing area."
"I felt something was wrong at the time, so I immediately ran away to report it to the Guard Hall; however, when I brought the Guard back, I discovered the mist was already gone."
"The Guard didn't believe what I said, and the neighbors I know all said they didn't see the mist I mentioned, so in the end, I could only tell the newspaper office about this matter."
"Ha." Speaking of this, Molike gave a bitter laugh and said: "Those newspaper offices probably only agreed to report this matter for the sake of a gimmick."
"To be honest, I haven't dared to go home to sleep for the past few days, for fear that the blood-red mist will appear again."
"Fortunately, now you are here." Molike looked at Meiyin with a grateful expression and said: "If the people from the Church also think there is no problem here, I think I can go home and live in peace."
"In any case, everything is left to you."
"I, I really don't dare to step into that housing area." He said, looking extremely terrified. "..."
Both sides were silent for a while, and then, Meiyin spoke first.
"Please rest assured, Mr. Molike, we will resolve the trouble here."
"During this time, please stay here quietly."
She paused, then added: "If we haven't returned by tomorrow morning, please go to the Church and notify the priest who is on duty at that time."
"Yes, yes, I will." Molike said, his tone inexplicably trembling.
"Let's go." Meiyin turned her head to look at the Night Watchman beside her and said.
"Mm." The Night Watchman gave Molike a meaningful look and nodded.
"You four, two of you stay behind." He said in a cold tone to the four Night Walkers.
"..." All four were silent; it seemed no one chose to volunteer to stay behind.
"Hans, Aidier, you two stay behind." Seeing this, the Night Watchman decisively ordered.
"Yes, my lord."
The two whose names were called responded.
Afterward, Meiyin, the Night Watchman, and the other two Night Walkers whose names were not called crossed the arch bridge and arrived at the dilapidated housing area opposite the factory.
Zzz... The Night Watchman took out a brass pocket watch from his bosom; one could see that inside the brass pocket watch, the Scarlet hand was constantly shaking.
"The pollution index is rising; it seems we have come to the right place." The Night Watchman grinned and said.
"Are you afraid, Huoerfu?" Meiyin looked at the Night Watchman and called the other party's name for the first time.
"Only the Night is Eternal, Meiyin." Huoerfu did not answer her, but simply recited the code of the Night Watchman.
"Is that so?" Meiyin tilted her head, not quite understanding what he meant.
"Just assume I'm not afraid." Huoerfu said, looking at her appearance.
"Let's hurry up; I really can't stay in this dump for even another second." He continued.
"What should we do? Are we going to follow them?"
On the other side, watching the few people walking across the arch bridge, Lita asked somewhat anxiously.
"Calm down, we don't have to take the arched bridge; we can wade across the stream," Yun Mu analyzed earnestly.
Although that stream was very smelly, very dirty, and might even contain some indescribable things inside.
But it didn't matter.
Compared to the sewage in the sewers, this stream was just so-so to her.
Anyway, her Quiet Boots were waterproof; it was the boots that would get dirty, not her.
At worst, she could just scrub the boots well afterward. "We can't all go over," Brenna thought for a moment and said, "We need to leave two people here to keep an eye on Molike."
She looked at Lita, the weakest among the group, and said, "Miss Lita, could I trouble you to stay here and watch him?"
"Me?" Hearing her words, Lita was a bit surprised, but then she quickly reacted.
Indeed, in terms of usefulness, she was the most useless among the group; staying here was perhaps the best choice. Biting her lip with some reluctance, Lita nodded and said, "Alright, I understand."
"Please rest assured, I will have my Shadow Guard stay with you," Brenna said to Lita, or perhaps as if saying it for Edward to hear.
PS: Updating a two-thousand-word chapter, having to pad two sentences of Writer's words every day is so hard.
If I don't pad it, it feels empty and doesn't look good.
So I guess I'll find a way to pad two sentences then.
