Leave of Absence Note: I woke up to find my foot hurting terribly; the joint of my big toe is red, swollen, and shiny, and I can barely touch it to the ground. It's my own fault for sneaking a snack last night—I ate a few skewers of barbecue, and my gout flared up.

Acute gout is excruciating; even sitting at home without moving, the pain comes in waves, and I have absolutely no focus to write.
