Chapter 22: Killing Strike
The three people's discussion, although there was no substantive progress, but their understanding of Special Ability kept deepening.
Their current situation was like being stranded on an isolated island, completely ignorant of outside information, not knowing how many people were still alive, nor what condition the survivors were in.
Therefore, all they could do was constantly improve and strengthen themselves to face the danger that might arrive at any time.
This was clearly the greatest survival crisis humanity had faced in thousands of years.
As for the nine people in Class 4 of Senior Year 3, life was at least manageable.
At least they still had baked flatbread to eat.
"Has everyone woken up? I'll go make breakfast." Chen Mu said conscientiously.
"No need, I can't have you do everything. Last night Du Jia Jia proactively discussed with me, saying she was preparing to take charge of the cooking."
"Du Jia Jia?"
Chen Mu was a bit doubtful.
He wasn't very familiar with his classmates aside from Wei Dalei; Du Jia Jia usually didn't talk much, her bag and stationery were plastered with photos of various celebrities, like a fangirl completely absorbed in the celebrity-chasing world.
Besides, she was greedy.
Chen Mu had seen her break school rules more than once, sneaking snacks into the classroom.
However, Du Jia Jia was fairly loyal.
Whenever she met someone, she would share a bit to eat.
Once Chen Mu passed by her seat, coincidentally this girl was secretly eating potato chips; seeing Chen Mu notice, she smiled and handed him a piece, making a gesture to keep it quiet.
Chen Mu then thought this girl… was a bit silly and cute.
Of course, as things stand now, Du Jia Jia's greedy "bad habit" actually saved everyone's life.
If it weren't for that piece of cake, perhaps everyone would already be starving and weak.
Hearing that Du Jia Jia was preparing to take charge of the kitchen, Chen Mu said with some unease: "Can she cook?"
On one hand, it was distrust of her cooking skills;
on the other hand, letting Du Jia Jia cook, who knows how much would be left in the end…
"She said she would learn slowly."
Dong Junwei sighed: "Actually, everyone deep down wants to do something, especially someone like Du Jia Jia who hasn't awakened any ability and can't help much."
Chen Mu understood Du Jia Jia's psychology.
As a team, nobody likes a freeloader.
Before the apocalypse, who wasn't the family's treasure? Why, in such danger, should I have to support you?
At first, everyone was just classmates; even without particularly close relationships, inertia of thought still made most people willing to lend a hand.
Few people would immediately turn bestial at the onset of the apocalypse, after all no one knows whether they might return to normal the next moment, at which point the law would not pursue them, and that person would be socially dead.
But over time, it's hard to say.
No matter how good the relationship, when faced with survival, human nature will ultimately revert to instinct.
Du Jia Jia obviously had a sense of crisis.
She hadn't awakened any Special Ability, nor could she devise plans like Tang Jing; other male classmates without ability could at least do some manual labor, but she couldn't help with anything.
If this continues.
She might end up being abandoned by the team.
Chen Mu laughed: "Actually she doesn't need to worry; every unawakened person is a potential asset, and besides, our situation now is not like an ordinary apocalypse—the amount of food is never a problem, feeding one person or ten makes little difference, one more person at least adds some strength."
"I've been comforting her that way too, but it's also necessary for everyone to share some work; cooking can't always be left to you."
"Okay." Chen Mu certainly had no objection.
Dong Junwei then laughed: "However, you might need to teach her at first; otherwise I'm worried we won't have anything to eat today."
"No problem." Chen Mu readily agreed.
After the three finished speaking, they were just about to go back.
Then they heard a commotion from not far away.
Chen Mu had already been on guard around him; he was the first to notice something amiss. Only when Dong Junwei and Tang Jing followed his gaze did they see three people running from the corner of the storeroom's outer wall.
Three strangers.
This was the first time since the disaster that Chen Mu and the others had seen outsiders.
Dong Junwei first froze, then her face showed joy.
This proved that there were still other people alive in the school.
If we could gather everyone together, our strength would surely be greater and our hope of survival higher.
However, things turned out contrary to expectation.
"Be careful of them." Tang Jing whispered a reminder.
Dong Junwei also quickly realized something was wrong.
Because those three people were already approaching quickly, yet showed no sign of slowing down; they held long, rod‑shaped weapons, but it was hard to tell what they were at a glance.
The next moment, the three opposite simultaneously raised their weapons.
At that point, everyone knew they harbored ill intent.
From the moment Chen Mu detected the disturbance, he had already prepared for battle; since childhood, his experience showed he settled disputes with fists far more often than with words.
In this apocalypse, he was even more ready to fight to the death at any time.
But he also harbored a sliver of hope.
He hoped the three coming would have good intentions.
At least first observe, listen to what they say.
However, the three opposite were equally blunt, not uttering a word, and upon meeting they went straight for a killing blow.
Dong Junwei and Tang Jing inevitably showed a hint of panic, a bit at a loss. They could accept centipedes eating people, but as fellow humans, to kill their own kind without reason upon meeting—even in this apocalypse—was hard to comprehend for a moment.
Chen Mu had already been poised and ready.
Before the three opposite could approach, he shoved Dong Junwei and shouted, "Go in and call for help!"
At the same time, he bent over and fled back into the door crack.
However, he was well aware.
Even if he could outrun the three opposite, Tang Jing and Dong Junwei had no hope.
Therefore, after the two women entered, he stood by the door holding his weapon.
At that moment.
Tang Jing ran while shouting, "Da Lei, save me!"
In the distance.
Wei Dalei sprang up almost reflexively, grabbed the huge Wolf-tooth Club, and rushed over as if flying.
However, he still had some distance to cover.
Just as he rose, the three outside had already bent down and crawled in through the gap under the door.
Chen Mu had already made preparations.
Without a word, he thrust his spear at the nearest person.
His goal was clear: first disable one person to intimidate the opposition, buying just enough time for Tang Jing and the two women to flee; once Wei Dalei arrived, he wouldn't have to worry much.
He was well versed in fighting techniques.
Either don't act, or if he acts, he must incapacitate the opponent.
……
Three men vs one man and two women.
The three outside were full of confidence; seeing Chen Mu and the others flee without hesitation, they never expected the other side to counter so decisively, so they chased in without a second thought.
"Pfft."
Chen Mu thrust with all his strength, directly piercing one person's throat.
That person was already bent over, his view blocked; as he just lifted his head after entering, he was struck in the throat by the spear.
Chen Mu did not pull the spear out directly.
Instead, he used his ability to slender the spear and easily withdrew his weapon.
Blood spurted out!
