Chapter 10: She Isn't Panicked at All Inside
……
"I recorded some variety shows; you all can watch them for a while."
It was already eight o'clock in the evening. After dinner, Liu Mu took out a tablet and handed it to Xu Xiaofeng and her younger brother. "Go to sleep early."
"What about you?" Xu Xiaofeng noticed Liu Mu's abnormality. There were only three surveillance cameras left outside, and today, the way this girl looked at the screen was not right.
"I need to organize some things. It's already the fourth day; everyone needs to adjust their state, otherwise, if the days get chaotic, it will affect your health."
This was something she had accidentally learned from a small video blogger who specialized in doomsday themes. She had watched those videos repeatedly; although they were naive and unrealistic, some theories were still worth borrowing.
"Alright, if you need help, just say so." Xu Xiaofeng did not dwell on it too much. She thought that Liu Mu must be feeling bad inside, as the storage yard she had just built had been burned to nothing.
Festive music began to play in the room. Liu Mu left the room, passed through a narrow corridor, and entered another room.
The temperature here was significantly higher. On the shelves were neatly placed heat-resistant suits, fireproof suits, cooling vests, and other spare instruments.
Taking off her large tank top and shorts, she kicked off her slippers in two motions, and Liu Mu skillfully changed her clothes.
With the inner layer of the cooling vest, the middle layer of the heat-resistant suit, the outer layer of the fireproof and radiation-proof suit, then putting on the gloves, boots, and helmet of the same three-layer structure, and finally carrying a pack of instruments on her back, the 'bamboo pole' Liu Mu had completely turned into an astronaut version.
Dressed and ready, she stood inside a large alloy and heat-resistant glass box in the corner of the room. After pressing a button, it turned out to be an elevator.
Of course, she had spent millions upon millions, so this kind of equipment was necessary. Besides the elevator, there were actually many other facilities, all designed and built with the help of the military industry big brother, Hu Xing.
Half a minute later, the elevator stopped in an inconspicuous concrete shed on one side of the small building. After a prompt tone, the door opened.
The shed, of course, did not just house an elevator car; it was also piled with some bricks, cement, and other highly non-flammable items as a disguise.
The helmet beeped, and the glass visor displayed the current ambient temperature as 376°C.
Compared to the six hundred-plus of the previous two days, Mother Earth was doing her best to cool down.
Despite wearing so much, Liu Mu still felt a heatwave hit her, especially in the enclosed space of the shed; even turning her head to touch something made it smoke.
She was not in a hurry to go out; the cooling liquid in her suit was circulating, which could ensure her safety.
She opened all the windows of the shed before pulling up the rolling shutter.
"Good heavens, Earth has become a fireball," Liu Mu took her first step outdoors, and the ground actually sparked. "If I didn't have a bit of common sense, I would have wanted to call it Mars."
Once out of the shed, everything in sight was a trace of burning. She didn't even need to leave the Scrap Station to imagine what the scene outside was like.
Before installing, she stepped on the smoking ground all the way to the perimeter wall gate. Fortunately, the newly built wall and gate were not damaged much.
She opened the gate from the inside and walked out. Sure enough, what met her eyes was a black-red earth. Everything was covered in a layer of ash, and there was quite a bit floating in the air, which somewhat affected her vision.
"The end of the world has really come."
Liu Mu turned her head to look around, then slowly but firmly raised her arms and... stretched toward the scorched earth.
In her past life, she had been scared to death just trying to survive, and several times she had almost failed to make it through; naturally, she had no time to appreciate this incomparably magnificent scenery.
But now, she had a shelter under her feet and a granary, so she didn't feel panicked at all.
"I need to study where to start collecting scrap later. I don't know if saving people counts as a merit. Forget it, I'm not entering a shelter anyway; I'd better figure out what to collect first."
Muttering a few words, she retreated inside the gate and locked the iron door again.
This time, she had to install a total of eight cameras and the accompanying sensor equipment.
It wasn't that she had such high awareness; it was mainly to prepare for leaving the underground later. If she didn't know the situation outside, she would be completely blind down below, and rushing up would easily lead to trouble.
Reborn for a lifetime, she cherished her life even more. After all, this orphan's life was one she had lived out bit by bit, making it more precious than anyone else's.
Installing in such high temperatures was not an easy task, especially with such thick clothing. The only benefit of the Burning Day was that the sky would not get dark; even in the middle of the night, it was only slightly darker than during the day.
She had heard people say before that in the north of the motherland, the sky was still bright at midnight in the summer. She had originally wanted to see the wonder once she earned enough money, but now she could witness it without traveling that far.
Fortunately, most of the racks for the previous cameras were still usable, and the lines buried in the walls and underground were not burned much. This time, she only needed to install a few key positions. Almost all were on the outer wall and the roof of the small building. Climbing up and down took some time, and it took nearly two hours to finish.
After finishing, she also took the opportunity to check the several iron gates of the perimeter wall and the few remaining items in the small building, ensuring there were no fire hazards in the high heat, before returning to the elevator to go back underground.
After taking off several layers of clothing, Liu Mu felt a bit exhausted, her body covered in sweat.
When she came out, Niu Boyi came up to her, rubbing against her legs with worry, sniffing the faint burnt smell on her body from time to time, and let out a few low whimpers.
The system provided a dog-language translation; the general meaning was that Gouzi was worried she had been burned to death.
It was not yet time for animal Mutation and Awakening, but Niu Boyi's intelligence was quite high among dogs, and being able to have such a reaction was already very good.
"Don't worry, I'm fine," Liu Mu endured her fatigue to rub its head, then gave it a pat. "Go, I need to take a shower, move aside."
The person and the dog returned to the constant-temperature room, directly facing Xu Xiaofeng's worried face. "What did you go do? The temperature outside is so high, and you still went out?"
Liu Mu could only say she needed to monitor the temperature outside to facilitate the situation after the temperature dropped.
"I have professional equipment, it's fine. And now it's only a little over three hundred degrees outside; in a few more days, maybe we can move on the ground."
Xu Xiaofeng was not as optimistic as she was, reaching out to hand her a glass of water. "Everything is still burning everywhere, I hope so. You hurry up and drink more water, take a shower, and I'll get you something to eat."
She hadn't felt it while being hot outside, but now, reminded by Xu Xiaofeng, Liu Mu's throat felt like it was smoking.
After taking a sip, Liu Mu was a bit stunned. "Salty-sweet water?"
"To replenish salt and sugar. Don't take a shower until your sweat has stopped flowing; don't get sick." Xu Xiaofeng pulled Niu Boyi to the dog house and then went to prepare food.
Saltwater was one thing, but there were no ice cubes added. Liu Mu had no chance to get near the freezer, so she could only drink the seven hundred milliliters of water with a bitter face.
"Ha!"
After letting out a long breath, she finally felt her body temperature drop.
After taking a shower, she came out to debug the newly installed equipment. The image appeared, and she ate her fried rice while watching it.
"You go sleep for a few hours first, I'll watch." After a few days, Xu Xiaofeng already knew what needed to be recorded while watching the monitor, feeling a bit pained that Liu Mu had been outside for so long. "Take some vitamins before you sleep; catching a cold now is very uncomfortable."
Liu Mu was full and indeed felt sleepy, so she did not refuse.
Things hadn't been too busy these past few days, but the main thing was the shift in psychological state. The changes outside were truly too huge, and they couldn't all sleep at the same time.
She was afraid that if the equipment or something outside went wrong in the meantime, the three of them and the dog would be wiped out.
Such days continued for another two days. Just as Liu Mu was calculating that the 'Seven-Day Burning' should be coming to an end, on the morning of the sixth day, the temperature rose again without warning.
It was as if it were some kind of death throes; in just three hours, it soared to 518°C, making Liu Mu think that all the detection instruments were broken.
However, on the surveillance screen, the fire in the distance that had already been extinguished reignited, dispelling the last shred of luck they had been holding onto.
Niu Boyi paced the room uneasily, a low roar rumbling in his throat, as if he sensed immense danger.
