Chapter 38: Night Visit to the Wharf
After washing her face and changing her clothes, Liu Mu entered at this time, and no one recognized her as the wounded person covered in black blood from before.
When she found Li Gang, this man was playing Fight the Landlord with a few fellow patients; his skills were not great, and among the three of them, he was the only one with seven or eight strips of paper stuck to his face.
"Brother Li, how is it?"
Li Gang had never imagined that Liu Mu would come to see him, so he immediately threw down his cards and shooed the fellow patients away.
"Who is this, a little wife?"
"Go, go, go, this is my Boss, don't ask blindly," ever since Li Gang figured out that he should still stick with Liu Mu, he had already classified himself as a member of the Waste Recycling Station.
Straightening out his somewhat messy bed, the grown man said obsequiously, "Boss, please sit, why did you come at this time?"
It was already dark, and the timing was indeed not quite right.
"I did them a favor and stopped by to see you," Liu Mu did not refute Li Gang's words, shoved her hands into her pockets, nodded at the few fellow patients, and sat down directly, "How is it? The doctor said the surgery went very smoothly, are there any other problems?"
"No, it's great, I can be discharged in a few days," Li Gang poured water for her again, but his right hand had an old injury and lacked strength, so he spilled quite a bit while pouring, feeling a bit pained.
Each patient only had one thermos of water a day, and that was with special care; the Survivors outside could get well water, but they had no way to boil it, yet even so, the water consumption of the entire Base remained extremely high. Many times, after queuing for half a day, there was no water left when it was their turn, and they could only keep waiting.
There were only so many troops that came for rescue, and it was already good that they brought food; of course, it was impossible to bring too much bottled water, so they could only try their best to utilize local resources. Moreover, this disaster was not just in the Haicheng area; according to the information currently given by the higher-ups, something had happened all over the world. They did not announce this news for fear of causing panic and chaos.
"That's good," Liu Mu did not beat around the bush and asked directly if he knew whether there were any Steel Factory Survivors in the Base.
"I know, a few even came to visit me this morning; they are all old technicians from the factory, and one of them used to be very close to my master." Li Gang had previously discovered that Liu Mu was stealing—no, taking—steel ingots, and asking like this now must have a reason, so he asked, "Boss, do you want to meet them?"
Liu Mu thought it over and shook her head, "Not for now. You stay here for a while longer; I will send you more things later, and you should also look after those people from the Steel Factory."
Not understanding Liu Mu's purpose, Li Gang still agreed. Actually, he also wanted to stay a few more days; it takes a hundred days to recover from a bone injury, and although his leg was not a comminuted fracture, it was absolutely impossible for him to get out of bed and walk within a few days.
Liu Mu agreed with him on the time to deliver the goods, and it was already pitch black outside, "I have an appointment to meet someone else. Rest well, don't skimp, eat and drink your fill and get good rest."
Li Gang nodded repeatedly; knowing that he would have a place to go after being discharged, he felt at ease.
Liu Mu returned to the third floor where Luo Sanlin and the others were; Luo Mu happened to be home, and after saying a word to her, she left the Base.
Of course, Liu Mu said she had some acquaintances on the first floor and could stay the night.
A few streets away from the Base, Liu Mu pulled a Truck missing its wheels and the wheels themselves out of the Heitao A space, assembled them on the spot, and drove toward Haicheng. Her destination was not the city center, but the freight wharf near the city.
The highway and railway were built side by side, both following the coastline; because of the huge volume of freight, the highway had a full ten lanes. When this coastal highway was built decades ago, it was a sensational event for the whole country and also fired the first shot for the region's opening up to the outside world.
After so many years, and having experienced this high temperature, it still had not suffered too much damage.
Haicheng was a southern coastal city with huge annual rainfall, and the demand for Rain Gear was second only to the Jiangnan region, which had a rainy season lasting three to four months.
It was also a coincidence; while chatting with the older sister who claimed to be a cashier for a trading company just now, she learned that they were in the business of exporting rain shelters and Rain Gear. The finished products were shipped from a light industrial city in the central region to the Haicheng Wharf, and then a portion was distributed in the province through their hands, with the rest exported.
The day before the disaster occurred, they happened to have a batch of goods arrive at the port, which were placed in a rented wharf warehouse and had not yet been transported away.
Taking these things, Liu Mu had no psychological burden; please, it was the apocalypse, whoever got them first owned them, and leaving them there would only result in them being destroyed in the coming disasters.
However, she was still a bit worried, afraid that the wharf might have caught fire and she would have made the trip for nothing.
The car traveled on the road for almost three hours, and from far away, she could see the dark, looming wharf, the collapsed tower cranes, and countless Containers, standing in the darkness like cyber-monsters.
The sea breeze was strong, and she did not see any signs of large-scale fire in the high beams, but the howling of one or two unknown animals could be heard from time to time nearby, which was somewhat terrifying.
Liu Mu parked the car in the storage area; the area here was huge, and she could only get out of the car to search.
She had thought the small company the older sister spoke of was truly small, but she found the warehouse the other party mentioned in less than half an hour.
Looking at the five warehouses connected together, Liu Mu felt once again that the other party might not have been modest, but rather did not want to expose themselves for fear of being targeted.
"With such a large volume of goods, could she be a big Boss?" If she were really just a cashier, she would be somewhat proud of working for a big company, right? Someone who says it's small even though the company is very large can only be the Boss of the company!
She really hadn't paid attention to this company; after all, they didn't sell scrap, and the goods distributed domestically were few, so it had nothing to do with her.
The temporary wharf warehouses were not brick-and-mortar buildings, but the kind of thick, easy-to-dismantle sheet metal that looked sturdy, with much of the paint on the surface charred and peeling off. Of course, Liu Mu couldn't open those huge electric doors and could only look for emergency exits or small doors.
Just as she was searching, she suddenly heard the low roar of engines coming from afar, and by the sound, there were many vehicles approaching.
Climbing onto the nearest stacked Containers, she hid herself in the night, and pulled out an infrared telescope that was missing a lens cap.
She didn't even need to turn on the infrared to see twenty or so large Trucks passing the breakwater and driving straight into the receiving area at the end of the wharf. As soon as the convoy arrived, the pitch-black sea surface suddenly lit up with one headlight after another; seeing this, Liu Mu couldn't help but break into a cold sweat, fortunately, she had entered the wharf from this side.
Good heavens, there was actually a fairly large ship docked on the sea. In the telescope, many figures in dark work clothes were moving on the ship, and forklifts were moving large boxes one by one.
There were loading machines on the ship's side, unloading these boxes onto the wharf, and the people who got off the convoy immediately stepped forward to receive and move the goods; their cooperation was very tacit, and it was clear this was not their first time.
The black boxes were so large that it took eight adult men to lift one, and there was no telling what was inside.
Moving her field of vision, Liu Mu wanted to find some clues, such as a company or organization name or logo, but the places where these were written were actually covered by conspicuous white paint.
Liu Mu was very curious, but she dared not get close, because besides workers, the convoy also had bodyguards holding dogs.
The dogs were all purebred German Shepherds, and she would likely be discovered if she got even slightly closer, not to mention she wasn't sure if those people had guns.
She had never heard of such a company here, and especially one that could still transport goods by ship after the disaster; their power and financial resources were not small.
Liu Mu watched for a while, but there was no one she recognized.
She had seen many soldiers at the Base over the past two days, and those soldiers had a very distinct temperament, so these people probably did not belong to the military; as for whether they belonged to other government departments, she was not sure.
Just as she lost interest and was about to put away the telescope, there was a problem with the unloading over there; a box slipped in mid-air, smashed onto the ground, and the things inside fell out.
Liu Mu wasn't lying when she said she followed military accounts on short video apps; although she didn't have the ability to trade arms, she needed to understand some basic common sense, and look, it came in handy.
What fell out of that box were artillery shells fixed in rows with iron chains; the specific model had also been painted over, but the shape alone was very familiar.
Was it really the military?
After thinking for a while, Liu Mu climbed down from the Container and snuck toward the bow of the ship like a thief.
