Chapter 141: Guest List
Gu Family.
Lin Jingshu finished explaining everything and handed the engagement invitation for Gu Tingyan to the housekeeper behind her: "The guest list is all here."
"Take this for the Old Master to see."
"See if there is anything else that needs to be added."
The housekeeper looked at the list, took it with both hands, and said solemnly: "Madam, regarding this engagement with the Chu Family, does the Eldest Young Master agree?"
The housekeeper was an old man by Gu Laoyezi's side who had worked in the Gu Family for many years and was loyal to the Old Master; even Lin Jingshu had to show him some respect.
Lin Jingshu looked at the housekeeper with a smile that wasn't quite a smile: "Of course he agrees."
"That little slut Qin Shu has been dead for how many years now."
"No matter how deep the love, it has been exhausted."
"This was something Tingyan agreed to himself."
Lin Jingshu narrowed her eyes: "Housekeeper, don't tell me you think I am forcing him?"
The housekeeper lowered his head and remained silent.
Lin Jingshu waved her hand, telling him to leave: "Take the guest list to the Old Master."
"Yes." The housekeeper took the list and retreated.
Lihua Yuan.
Gu Laoyezi received the list from Lin Jingshu, his expression unsightly and his heart heavy; he tossed the list onto the table beside him.
He called Gu Tingyan, who was far away abroad, his voice low: "Do you really want to get engaged to the Chu Family?"
After Qin Shu died four years ago, Gu Tingyan had been devastated, locking himself in his room year-round without stepping out, decadent and dispirited, living like neither a man nor a ghost.
Gu Laoyezi had found many psychological experts for him to no avail, and had also entrusted Gu Tingyan's friends to persuade him, but it was useless; Gu Tingyan had always kept himself locked in his room.
Gu Laoyezi had no other choice but to have people keep a close watch on Gu Tingyan.
However, one day Gu Tingyan opened the door himself, walked out, and subsequently left the country without looking back.
No one knew what he had been doing abroad all these years; for four whole years, he had never returned to the country.
From the other end of the phone came the man's low, magnetic voice: "Mm."
Gu Laoyezi was stunned, not expecting that Gu Tingyan had agreed to this himself.
"Is it your parents forcing you?"
Gu Tingyan: "Grandfather, no one is forcing me."
Hearing this, Gu Laoyezi was taken aback, not knowing what Gu Tingyan intended to do.
This eldest grandson of his Gu Family had now become increasingly unfathomable to him.
After hanging up the phone, Gu Laoyezi looked at Gu Yichen, who was sitting below, his gaze fading.
Gu Laoyezi let out a deep sigh: "You heard the call just now, didn't you?"
Gu Yichen sat in his wheelchair, eyes lowered, his pitch-black pupils making it impossible to discern his joy, anger, sorrow, or happiness.
Regardless of how the outside world was, it seemed to have nothing to do with him.
Whoever Gu Tingyan wanted to marry had nothing to do with him.
Gu Laoyezi's eyes carried grief as he looked at the housekeeper beside him: "Push the Young Master out to soak up some sun."
Housekeeper: "Yes."
The housekeeper pushed Gu Yichen out the door and ran into Chu Sheng and Chu Chen, who were entering.
Chu Sheng's gaze landed on Gu Yichen, a smile on her face as she walked toward him carrying a gift: "Chenchen, Auntie brought you a gift; see if you like it."
Gu Yichen looked at the gift on his lap, his fingers curling slightly, but he did not move.
Chu Sheng was used to his silence; she raised her hand to stroke his head, her smile gentle, looking like a virtuous wife and good mother.
In recent years, Chu Sheng had begun to frequent the Gu Family, and the servants at the Gu Family Old Residence treated her as half the mistress of the house.
Now that Chu Sheng was going to be engaged to the Eldest Young Master, she would likely be the future mistress of the Gu Family.
The housekeeper pushed Gu Yichen and stood in place, watching the direction the mother and son had left in, his expression darkening slightly.
Chu Sheng walked into Lin Jingshu's room, all smiles: "Mom, I'm here."
She had just heard that the Gu Family had finalized the engagement date and had come over impatiently.
She had waited for this moment for too long.
Lin Jingshu watched her enter, looking at her as if she were her own daughter, a smile on her face: "Coming is enough, why bring so many things?"
Chu Sheng looked at Lin Jingshu shyly: "Mom, when is Tingyan coming back?"
Lin Jingshu: "Tomorrow."
She affectionately took Chu Sheng's arm: "Don't worry, this time he agreed to it himself."
Lin Jingshu smiled: "He has owed you and your son for so many years; it is time to make it up to you with a wedding."
Excitement surged in Chu Sheng's heart as she smiled and leaned against Lin Jingshu: "Mom is still the best to me."
Chu Chen watched them chat and slipped out; he searched three times before finding Gu Yichen, who was sitting in his wheelchair basking in the sun.
He walked up to Gu Yichen, looked down at him from above, and smiled triumphantly: "Little cripple, my mom and dad are getting married."
"From now on, I will be their only child!"
Gu Yichen raised his eyes to look at him, his pitch-black pupils dark and deep: "Wait until they actually get married first."
The implication was that an engagement meant nothing, and even marriages could end in divorce.
Chu Chen's expression darkened slightly; he felt Gu Yichen was just being stubborn. For the past four years, Gu Yichen had been confined to a wheelchair and had no value to the Gu Family anymore.
Over these four years, Lin Jingshu had shifted the focus of her upbringing to Chu Chen and no longer strictly controlled Gu Yichen's life as she had before.
Originally, she thought it was only a matter of time before Gu Yichen could stand up, but she hadn't expected that even after hiring so many famous doctors later on, he still couldn't stand.
Lin Jingshu truly felt that Qin Shu was a scourge who had harmed Tingyan and then harmed her such an outstanding, carefully cultivated eldest grandson.
Since Lin Jingshu was able to abandon Gu Tingyan back then, with Chu Chen, a grandson with sound limbs, she would naturally abandon Gu Yichen a second time.
Over these four years, Chu Chen has been able to come and go from the Gu Family Old Residence almost at will, and all the servants have tacitly accepted that he is the little Crown Prince of the Gu Family.
Yet that little young master who was once as dazzling as the sun, that genius young master from back then, seems to have faded into the crowd.
Chu Chen would not be angry with a little cripple; his mother said that the entire Gu Family would be theirs in the future.
Once he inherits the entire Gu Family in the future, he will just kick Gu Yichen out!
Chu Chen glared at him viciously and said, "Just you wait, sooner or later I will make you get out of the Gu Family!"
At dinnertime, Gu Yichen went downstairs to eat dinner.
Lin Jingshu sat at the table and looked at the servant beside her; the servant's face was full of terror, and she stood to the side trembling: "When the little young master came back, he fell down, and his leg was bleeding."
Lin Jingshu frowned: "Go find a doctor to take a look at him."
"Take his dinner upstairs."
"Yes."
After Lin Jingshu finished speaking, she picked up a chopstick of vegetables and placed it in Chu Chen's bowl, her tone gentle: "How were your exam results?"
Chu Chen took out his test paper and smiled: "Grandma, I scored one hundred points!"
He held that one-hundred-point test paper and sighed: "I heard that little brother didn't even get a passing grade on his exam."
"Grandma, wasn't little brother quite smart before?"
"How come he can't even score higher than me?"
He said with concern: "How about we hire a tutor for him?"
