Chapter 13: Warehouse Interview and the
The good news for Li Yang was replied to almost instantly.
Li Yang: "!!!"
Through the screen, Feng Yan could imagine that usually calm guy in the warehouse.
At this moment, the picture of him possibly jumping straight up from the engineering chair.
Being able to make Li Yang type three exclamation marks shows how shocking this news is.
Feng Yan replied with a smile:
"Stay calm, Old Li."
"Let's discuss in detail at the warehouse tonight, and I'll bring you a 'surprise' as well. (rose-in-mouth. jpg)"
The 'surprise' he mentioned naturally refers to Chen Guang, whom he is currently contacting.
However, this matter isn't settled yet; he'll temporarily hold off and tell Old Li later tonight.
"Old Li" is a nickname he's only recently started using; it feels more natural than calling him by his full name, Li Yang.
"It also better reflects the 'revolutionary friendship' forged from tackling tough problems together and sharing piles of instant noodles during this period.
After finishing his current work, Feng Yan began to ponder how to help Chen Guang.
Just give him money?
That's inappropriate, and he doesn't have the authority.
Offer a venue?
Li Yang's warehouse could possibly be squeezed in, but he'd first need to get the landlord's (Li Yang's) consent.
Most importantly, he needs to meet the person in person first.
He needs to verify whether this 'Mosquito-Man' is truly as seen in the livestream, someone worth cultivating.
He opened WeChat, and Chen Guang had already accepted the friend request.
Feng Yan got straight to the point:
"Hello, Student Chen Guang. I'm Feng Yan. Is it convenient to talk on the phone?"
A few minutes later, a slightly nervous young man's voice came from the earpiece:
"Hello... hello, Teacher Feng..."
Feng Yan chuckled: "Don't, call me Feng Ge or Old Feng, either is fine."
"I watched your livestream; your technique is impressive, just your luck was a bit off—you hit the dormitory safety red line."
His tone was relaxed, instantly closing the distance.
He briefly introduced the nature of his work.
(He mainly emphasized that they support technological innovation, are not scammers, and their identity information can be found on their department's official website.)
Then he extended an olive branch:
"Our side happens to be supporting a friend similar to you, who's also tinkering with hardcore gadgets, and he has his own small workshop."
"The environment is a bit messy, but the power supply is stable, no one complains, and most importantly, we absolutely support all kinds of 'outrageous' yet interesting ideas."
"If you temporarily have no place to work on your laser system, you can come check it out; it can also serve as a temporary base."
On the other end of the phone, there was a few seconds of silence, and Chen Guang's somewhat hurried breathing could be heard.
For a tech otaku.
A place where one can work peacefully and possibly meet like-minded people is too tempting.
"Really... really possible? Won't I disturb your friend?"
Chen Guang's voice carried anticipation and a hint of uncertainty.
"Don't worry, at his place, having more people might even help him pass a wrench."
Feng Yan smiled and said, "In that case, are you free tomorrow afternoon if you're interested?"
"I'll take you to check the place out."
"I'm free! I'm free!" Chen Guang agreed eagerly.
With Chen Guang settled, Feng Yan was in a great mood.
After work, he deliberately detoured to a cooked-food shop to buy half a roasted goose.
He then rode a shared bike and leisurely made his way to the 'Tie Lang Gong Fang'.
Upon entering, he immediately felt the warehouse's atmosphere was different.
Although still messy, this mess is a 'bustling' mess, not the earlier 'desperate' mess.
Li Yang even rarely cleared out the central area.
Obviously, this is in preparation for a possible test.
"Sure, Old Li," Feng Yan said, holding up the roasted goose in his hand.
"You've started taking initiative to tidy up? Looks like the Provincial Science Academy's 'chicken blood' effect is significant."
Li Yang didn't pick up the thread, but the light in his eyes couldn't be lied about.
He took the roasted goose and placed it on a relatively clean corner of the workbench, then got straight to the point:
"What specific support does the Provincial Science Academy offer?"
Feng Yan repeated what Director Wang had said.
He emphasized the 'test venue', 'equipment authorization', and 'technical consultation', shifting from small-time tinkering to professional team R&D.
Tie Lang Gong Fang is still too small; even with Feng Yan, there are only two people.
What the superiors need is a mature professional R&D team, not just an individual small workshop.
This small workshop's team needs to grow quickly.
Li Yang listened, his fingers unconsciously tapping the tabletop, obviously digesting and planning quickly.
The venue is crucial; right now we can't dare to start many actions.
Equipment… if we could use a high‑precision three‑coordinate measuring machine or a wind tunnel…
He mutters to himself, his eyes growing brighter.
So, we need to quickly draft a requirements list—the more specific, the better.
But since we've only been preliminarily added to the support list.
I estimate we can only sort out what the venue can handle, and how much equipment and materials can actually be supplied; the rest depends on our progress later.
I'll figure out the team personnel; you just take the lead and focus on the research, and leave the rest to me.
Feng Yan tears off a roasted goose leg and hands it to him.
Tomorrow afternoon, we might get a small visitor here.
Li Yang pauses his chewing of the goose leg and shoots a questioning look.
A physics prodigy from Yunchuan University, working on lasers.
Feng Yan concisely explains Chen Guang's situation.
What I'm after is his foundation in rapid identification and precise control; it seems complementary to your mechanical system.
First let them come over to see the environment, and we'll decide if it fits.
Li Yang listens, shows no expression, merely hums a "mm", and continues chewing the goose leg.
But Feng Yan knows that the guy didn't outright oppose—it's tacit approval.
The next afternoon, Chen Guang carries a bulging backpack.
At the agreed spot, he stands a bit awkwardly at the old factory gate, waiting.
He's wearing a clean plaid shirt, his hair neatly combed—clearly well‑prepared.
Feng Yan arrives on a small bicycle; seeing his "good student" look, he almost bursts out laughing.
It differs a bit from the scruffy tech‑nerd he imagined.
"Chen Guang?" Feng Yan calls out.
"Feng bro!" Chen Guang sees Feng Yan, visibly relaxes, and hurries over.
Leading him toward the warehouse, Feng Yan asks casually:
"In your laser system, is the core difficulty the identification algorithm or the beam control?"
That question really opened Chen Guang's mouth.
He talked from convolutional neural networks in image processing to pulse modulation of the laser.
From multi‑sensor fusion to how to reduce false‑positive rates, he spoke at breakneck speed, eyes shining, and the earlier awkwardness vanished.
Feng Yan nods while listening, feeling more assured:
He's a talent for technology and has passion.
He pushes open the warehouse's heavy iron door; inside a mix of machine oil and metal.
And… a complex scent of roasted goose hits the nose.
Chen Guang looks at the scene before him, like a mechanical wasteland set, and is clearly stunned.
Li Yang is squatting on the ground, tweaking a mechanical leg.
Hearing the movement, he lifts his head, his gaze calmly sweeping over Chen Guang.
He nods—a greeting—then lowers his head to continue working.
Feng Yan quickly introduces:
"Li Yang, the 'master' here is also a main force of our R&D team."
"Li Yang, this is Chen Guang."
Chen Guang looks at the power‑filled metal component in Li Yang's hand and the faint, complete exoskeleton frame in the corner.
His eyes instantly straighten, his mouth slightly opens.
"This… this is…" he points at the exoskeleton, his voice a bit stammering.
"Mm, it's the one you saw in the report."
Feng Yan laughs, "Don't mind the exposed wiring; when it moves, it'll be insanely cool."
Chen Guang, as if on a pilgrimage, steps forward cautiously a few paces.
He doesn't dare to touch, just watches intently.
He subconsciously mutters:
"Is the joint transmission scheme a hybrid hydraulic‑electric motor?"
"This layout… how is heat dissipation solved? Weight distribution…"
Li Yang, rarely, stops his work, looks up at Chen Guang.
He seems a bit surprised that Chen could spot the key points at a glance.
He answers concisely:
"Hybrid drive. Air cooling plus partial liquid‑cooling channels. Counterweight optimized over three versions."
The two tech‑nerds converse in language outsiders barely understand.
Their first exchange begins.
Feng Yan, delighted, leans back and scrolls his phone.
Suddenly, big data pushes another absurd video to him.
Title: 【Challenge the Net's Strongest Skyrocket Monkey! This precision, this range, I say… who dares to claim first after the second?】
Publisher: Firecracker King—Wang Hao.
Feng Yan clicks it out of curiosity.
In the video, a dark-skinned young man with a confident smile stood on an open patch of ground.
He held in his hand something that looked unimpressive, a beefed-up version of a 'Skyrocket Monkey'.
(A kind of firecracker that, once lit, shoots straight up with a whoosh.)
(In the north it's also called 'Drilling Sky Monkey', 'Piercing Sky Monkey', 'Piercing Sky Roar'; in the south it's more often called 'Chongtian Cannon'. My family's area is more northern, so we basically call it 'Skyrocket Monkey'.)
Several tens of meters ahead of him, several cardboard-box targets stood.
"Listen up, fellas! Last time a buddy said, if you've got the skill, let my Skyrocket Monkey hit him and I'll buy 3000 yuan worth of fireworks."
"Brothers, bear witness—I've taken a screenshot—today let's see if I can actually hit the bullseye!"
Wang Hao grinned at the camera and lit the fuse.
"Whoosh—bang!"
That 'Piercing Sky Monkey' trailed a tail of flame, yet it didn't fly wildly.
But instead, it followed a strange trajectory and precisely hit the target with the red bullseye in the center!
Although the target was blown to fragments, that aim was indeed astonishing.
【Holy crap! Shoot where you point?!】
【It started off flying so crooked—how did it manage to hit the target?!】
【This is basically a missile, right! (just kidding)】》
【This Skyrocket Monkey can even change its course? (just kidding)】》
【Blog owner, is your fireworks factory hiring? I want to go learn how to make missiles!】
【How did you achieve such trajectory stability? Explain the principle!】
Feng Yan watched the video, his eyes slowly narrowing.
Skyrocket Monkey… stable trajectory… precise hit…
A piece of knowledge he'd learned in school suddenly flashed through his mind:
"Holy crap! If I remember correctly, this seems to be Qian Xuesen (no typo, those who get it get it! (just kidding) save-your-life. jpg) trajectory, right!"……
This thing, just enlarge it a bit, tweak tweak.
Isn't it just… a prototype of a low-cost micro rocket or a target projectile?!
He glanced at Chen Guang, who was engaged in a friendly technical debate with Li Yang over whether LiDAR or IMU data fusion should take priority.
He also glanced at the supremely confident 'Firecracker King' on the phone screen.
Feng Yan stroked his chin, feeling that the lineup of this 'future national scientific research team' reserve force.
He was sprinting all the way toward a direction that was both absurd and awesome.
"Looks like," he muttered softly, the corner of his mouth curling into a 'plan succeeded' smile.
"Next, I need to go meet this 'Firecracker King'."
