Chapter 360: The Metamorphosis Process of the Mind Flayer

~6 min read 1,075 words

Luo De slapped him across the face.

The octopus-like soft rear skull and mouth tentacles of the Mind Flayer were crushed by immense force, spinning like a rattle drum.

One tentacle was ripped apart outright, purple-black blood dripping steadily downward.

His eyes instantly cleared, still tinged with a hint of daze.

What's going on?

Did my psychic ability just hit a rock?

Even if I used it on a rock, there should've been feedback from a failed casting—what kind of silence is this?

Do humans have this much mental resistance???

Thus, information about the man before him was swiftly broadcast through the psychic network to every mind in this Mind Flayer community.

"Little Black."

Luo De whispered softly.

The black Shi Laimu on his right hand, like a membrane glove, rapidly expanded and swelled, engulfing the Mind Flayer's head in a vast net.

Crunch crunch—

The grating sound of Shi Laimu devouring a brain echoed again.

The Mind Flayer loved eating humanoid brains; now being eaten itself was only poetic justice.

"Aren't Mind Flayers and the Igors kind of similar?"

Not in appearance.

But in their mastery of psychic arts and their obsession with brains.

The Igors liked studying brains—they didn't eat them, though.

After all, the extradimensional realm is a world of psychic projections; similar lifeforms there are only natural.

Luo De drew his sword and turned.

The gradually golden cross-longsword slashed out a 【Screaming Sword Wave】, cleaving a Mind Flayer attempting to flee from the shadows into two halves.

Facing his maximized mental resistance, the fleeing Mind Flayers—just shattered by the Mind Control Consortium mage—were utterly unprepared and powerless against Luo De.

These things were pure specialists: decent psychic abilities, but bodies weaker than a mage's.

You wouldn't believe they didn't even have shielding spells.

Shi Laimu Little Black's 【Memory Devouring】 ended.

And failed.

He gained almost no information.

The Mind Flayer's brain was like a disposable sub-body; during Little Black's consumption, not a single deep thought could be reached.

The only thing known was that each group of Mind Flayers was controlled by a master brain, connected by a psychic network enabling seamless real-time communication.

This wasn't good news.

His immunity to psychic abilities would spread instantly.

Hss—

Hss—

Hss—

Sharp white cutting waves flew continuously, blasting Mind Flayers and their juveniles hidden within the mountain walls out into the open, then killing them one by one.

A completely one-sided battle.

There weren't many Mind Flayers in this space; after Luo De finished them off, he immediately dashed through a tunnel opening in the cave wall.

Along the way, he saw not only controlled humans but also numerous goblins, gray dwarves, and a fish-headed humanoid race—all digging tunnels, hauling loads, doing hard labor.

Not hard to understand.

Mind Flayers were frail, pure aristocrats.

Their psychic advantages meant they didn't need to work themselves—enslaving others was enough.

A new race with serious potential as a slave master!

Luo De swung his 【Sword of Devotion】 relentlessly, cutting down every visible target.

He didn't care if you were a victim or infected with Mind Flayer larvae.

I don't have time to tell the difference—hate me if you must.

Come back as an undead to find me? Fine—I'll just kill you again.

He raced through the tunnel, then encountered a large downward pit.

He also spotted several Mind Flayers scrambling along the edge walkway.

Luo De maxed out his 【Spider Sense】, cackling loudly as he swung his sword, his villainous aura soaring to its peak.

Swordlight spiraled downward like a massive impact drill, spinning as it ruthlessly reaped lives.

Of course.

They fought back.

Psychic detonations, psychic storms, thought theft, psychic chains, mind fog—all of them.

But it was useless.

A few Mind Flayers managed to cast low-tier spells like 【Fire Ring】, likely adaptations to the continent's spiritual environment—but still utterly useless, pathetically weak.

Guilt?

None.

A bit of regret, though.

Earlier, he'd lifted up a Mind Flayer's pants—holy shit, nothing there, completely smooth.

Only after Little Black devoured several brains did he learn this species was hermaphroditic, reproducing asexually, with no external reproductive organs—all reproductive processes completed internally.

The resulting ovaries were nurtured in a brain pool near the master brain; once larvae were born, they were injected into humanoid bodies to trigger Mind Flayer metamorphosis.

Since Emila Campbell could feed larvae to nearby refugees, there must be a master brain here.

BOOM!!

Luo De landed in the pit like a cannonball.

Dust exploded everywhere.

His sword was caked in purple-black blood, impossible to shake off.

He moved fast—every Mind Flayer and controlled human above had been dealt with.

"Waaah…"

From a dark corner after landing came the sound of a child crying.

Heartbreaking, pitiful, stirring pity.

Luo De turned to look.

A Mind Flayer, only one meter tall, huddled with knees hugged, covering its eyes and weeping—far cuter than its two-meter-tall kin above.

Even its octopus-like tentacles were short and small, its facial contours rounder, appearing innocent.

"Brother… don't kill me."

It was a girl's voice—tiny, pitiful.

Luo De strode over and pinched its head like grabbing a basketball.

"Brother?"

The tiny Mind Flayer's eyes held fear and confusion.

Luo De smiled gently at her, then crushed her face and skull together.

Her petite body slumped limply to the ground with a wet thud, purple-black blood and shattered skull fragments splattering everywhere.

"What's the act for? If your form is fully developed, you're already an adult Mind Flayer."

Oh, sorry—that might not be precise. Even if you were a juvenile, I'd still crush you.

"If you're resorting to this pathetic trick, it seems even your master brain is desperate, my friend."

After all, this group of Mind Flayers had been scattered and were fleeing for their lives.

Their group structure wasn't even complete; Luo De, their natural nemesis, arriving to raze their nest saved him plenty of trouble.

【Spider Sense】 activated.

Plus 【Secret Door Detection】.

Found it.

Jie jie jie—

Luo De launched a flying front kick, smashing a massive stone door disguised as a cave wall into splinters midair.

Inside, at the center, lay a thirty-to-forty-square-meter nutrient pool, where a massive brain, taller than him, pulsed and writhed.

It was oddly novel to sense urgency and panic from a brain's pulsing.

Beside the master brain stood four or five larger Mind Flayers; knowing psychic abilities were useless against Luo De, they charged desperately, trying to grapple him with their tentacles.
