Chapter 585: We
September 3rd, 10:00 AM.
Song Yao went shopping with Ding Jiahui, while Xu Qingzhou first went to the institute to look around. Zhao Shengwen and Zheng Xu both had extensive project management experience, and the other researchers were no novices either. Once Xu Qingzhou confirmed the plan, everything proceeded in an orderly fashion.
He found himself with some free time, so he simply drove to the Jingda Mathematics Academy.
The Dean's office.
"A rare guest, Professor Xu. Please, come in."
Tao Fangqi looked at the person knocking on the door and stood up enthusiastically to welcome him. This man was the face of the Jingda Mathematics Academy.
"Dean Tao, am I disturbing you?"
"I wish you would disturb me every day. Opportunities to discuss mathematics with a Fields Medalist are rare."
Xu Qingzhou didn't stand on ceremony and sat down on the sofa. Tao Fangqi had once been a scholar in pure mathematics as well, only later moving into administration.
Tao Fangqi poured tea while asking, "Is the institute not busy today?"
Xu Qingzhou shook his head and said with a smile, "Everyone is busy except for me. I thought I'd come over here to find something to do, otherwise, I'd feel like I'm idling away the day."
"Find something to do?"
Tao Fangqi was stunned for a moment.
Xu Qingzhou didn't beat around the bush. "It's like this: if it's convenient, I'd like to teach a course here at Jingda."
The office fell silent, but soon Tao Fangqi's surprised voice rang out.
"You want to come back to school to teach?!"
"Yes, I am an honorary professor at Jingda, after all. It's normal to come back and teach a class." Xu Qingzhou smiled. Taking on students was out of the question—he didn't have that much energy—but teaching a course would be better, allowing him to interact more with young people.
Tao Fangqi quickly regained his composure, his face showing a look of pleasant surprise. "Convenient? How could it not be convenient!"
In fact, there had long been voices in the academy wanting to invite Xu Qingzhou back to teach.
This was a Fields Medalist, after all. Hadn't the internet previously claimed that Jingda's Mathematics Department wasn't the top in name or reality? What could have more promotional power than this?
Of course, this proposal had ultimately been rejected. Not to mention that Xu Qingzhou was a Fields Medalist—unique in the Xia Nation—even scholars at the academician level didn't have time to teach students.
Look at those academicians; many, after taking on students, simply dump them on their doctoral students to manage. Coming to school to teach a class was even more impossible.
Tao Fangqi smiled gently. "I was originally considering how to bring this up with you, to invite you back to teach a class or hold a lecture or something. It seems our students in the Mathematics Academy are in luck. By the way, what would you like to teach?"
"Calculus and Analytic Geometry."
Xu Qingzhou had already considered this clearly before coming. Calculus focuses on the mathematical analysis of change and accumulation, covering a complete system from basic limits to complex differential equations. Analytic Geometry uses algebraic methods to deconstruct geometric problems, building algebraic models of geometric objects from planes to space.
Both use variable mathematics as their core tool.
The contents support each other; Analytic Geometry provides geometric intuition for Calculus—such as the slope of a curve's tangent corresponding to a derivative, and surface integrals relying on parametric equations—while Calculus provides the tool for dynamic analysis in Analytic Geometry.
This was a field he was proficient in.
"Good, I will arrange it immediately. The Mathematics Academy doesn't have a combined course in this area yet; you'll fill the gap perfectly."
Tao Fangqi nodded slightly, paused, and then said with a smile, "When does your institute start recruiting interns? There are still quite a few good seedlings in mathematics who could go over and learn a lot."
"We plan to recruit again at the end of October. You know, the institute's teams are still in the break-in stage."
The institute could roughly accept 15 interns: 5 each from the Mathematics Academy, Physics Academy, and Materials Academy—1 undergraduate, 2 master's students, and 2 doctoral students. ===== CHAPTER 586 =====
