Chapter 64: Three from the Bottom Nest, Three Will Succeed

~6 min read 1,098 words

In the room arranged for Zhou Yun and the others by the Bishop of the Gene Thief,

Monge stared at Zhou Yun with a look as if his mother had just died,

Leina stared at Zhou Yun with a look as if her father had just died,

Those who didn’t know might think Zhou Yun had violated their parents.

Zhou Yun’s gaze settled on Leina, signaling her to use her precognition ability.

Leina withdrew her mournful gaze; her doe-like, hazy eyes seemed to reflect countless scenes,

A fine sheen of sweat broke out on her forehead, and fatigue darkened her face.

“You fooled them.”

Leina whispered:

“No one is eavesdropping.”

“Or they don’t care whether anyone is eavesdropping.”

Zhou Yun glanced at the cramped room and said.

The room’s furnishings were simple and ordinary: only two temporary beds supported by iron frames, a chair, and a table,

On the table lay purified water and some food.

The Four-Armed Divine Emperor Cult had gathered all believers destined for the First Zone within buildings under their control,

And tomorrow morning, they would be collectively transported to the First Zone.

“After all, once injected with the Gene Thieves’ corrupted genes, one is forced into loyalty.”

When Zhou Yun first entered this room, he had noticed that entrances and exits of nearby buildings were guarded by Gene Thief sentinels lurking in shadows,

As if determined to prevent believers from regretting and fleeing. Why did the Gene Thieves recruit so many people?

Zhou Yun’s eyes were filled with confusion; he looked at Leina, hoping for her precognition.

But this time, Leina only shook her head wearily,

“I can’t see clearly—the shadows of hunger obscure the Gene Thief leader. Nothing is visible.”

“If we could get closer, I might see clearly.”

So we really must enter the First Zone?

Zhou Yun pondered, stroking his chin.

“Hey, I’ve got an idea!”

Before Zhou Yun could organize his thoughts, Monge suddenly spoke up.

He chuckled, a confident smirk on his lips:

“I’ve got a brilliant idea.”

“The Gene Thief leader is going to personally inject us with alien genes, right?”

Zhou Yun nodded, eyeing Monge with a strange expression—

What kind of brilliant idea could this cultist fool possibly have?

“Then why should only it corrupt us? We can corrupt it in return!”

As he spoke, Monge pulled open his chest clothing, peeled away a patch of body clay, and revealed his chest,

His blood-darkened flesh was riddled with fissures, from which blood continuously oozed, mixed with tiny, slug-like parasites.

These slug-like parasites wriggled in his filthy blood, opening their grotesque mouthparts and squealing shrilly—terrifying beyond words.

Leina recoiled a step in disgust, hiding behind Zhou Yun,

While Zhou Yun observed Monge’s horrific corruption with keen interest.

“Humans cannot resist their corruption at the genetic level—but I am different. We are not the only ones skilled in this art.”

Monge growled, a cruel smile curling his lips:

“When it comes to life and genes, our Benevolent Father God is the true master of this domain.”

“I coexist with these parasites; even fragments of their genes have been integrated into mine.”

“The Gene Thief leader can inject alien genes into me—I can inject parasites into him, corrupting his genetic sequence.”

You’re seriously going to challenge the Gene Thief leader in a genetic corruption duel?

Zhou Yun stared at Monge, skin prickling,

A Nurgling Chosen like him, trying to corrupt the Star-Eater’s planetary avatar?

Zhou Yun still remembered Monge’s blood couldn’t even cause diarrhea.

“Don’t look at me like that—I’ve received far stronger blessings now.”

Monge noticed the deep revulsion in Zhou Yun’s eyes:

“Remember the triangular sword? That blade holds a fragment of our Father God’s power. My brother and I gained greater blessings from it.”

Zhou Yun frowned,

He examined closely—there seemed to be a sword wound at Monge’s chest center,

He must have inserted the triangular sword into his chest to gain more blessings,

This blessing did not come directly from the Warp,

But from the power infused into the triangular sword by the corpse guild of the old Eighth Zone through sacrifice,

A terrifying artifact born from the death, plague, and disease of an entire zone—its power was naturally immense.

There have been cases of cunning ones being corrupted in return,

If Monge’s Nurgling blessing is strong enough, theoretically this plan could work.

Monge really does seem to have come up with something plausible.

Yet Zhou Yun’s eyes still brimmed with deep skepticism.

“As a team, can you at least have some faith in me?”

Monge could no longer bear Zhou Yun and Leina’s stares and blurted out:

“We, the Three from the Bottom Nest—three, and we’ll succeed!”

“. . . We’re a team?” Zhou Yun and Leina said in unison, tone filled with astonishment.

“. . .” Monge instantly felt isolated.

He sullenly sat on the edge of the bed, rubbing his horns hard:

“Even if I fail, it costs you nothing.”

“At least I can weaken the Gene Thief leader for a while.”

“Then you’ll find it much easier to act.”

Zhou Yun had to admit Monge was right,

To enter the First Zone’s administrative building and find the Warp engine, they would have to operate under the Gene Thief leader’s very gaze,

That thing was a monster capable of fighting a full squad of Blood Angels and Deathwatch Dreadnoughts head-on,

Zhou Yun might match or even overpower it in strength with his Superhuman Gloves—but his human body couldn’t keep up in other aspects,

Not to mention the vast numbers of Gene Thieves nearby,

And as for Zhou Yun’s side—

Leina’s combat ability was practically useless unless the Emperor himself possessed her.

Monge had some combat ability, but he was no match for the Gene Thief leader.

If Monge could indeed weaken the Gene Thief leader, their operation would become far easier.

Zhou Yun rubbed his chin, a thought popping into his mind—

An idea he’d had back at the mutant settlement.

“I need to return to your settlement and find your brother.”

Zhou Yun said to Monge.

Monge blinked in surprise,

With his ability to alter appearance and form, plus the ring that passed through walls, Zhou Yun slipping away for a night wasn’t hard.

“What do you want with my brother?” Monge frowned. “Unless we can break or bypass the tech shield, they can’t help.”

“You’ve got your idea. I’ve got mine.”

Zhou Yun chuckled, pulled the Anywhere Ring from his pocket, and placed it against the wall—his figure vanished into it.
