Chapter 24: Illegal Psyker!
It was noon the next day when Zhou Yun climbed out of bed.
He rubbed his dark circles, washed his face with recycled water from the pipe, and cheered himself up.
The battle between the gangs last night lasted until the second half of the night, during which curses, gunshots, and wails echoed incessantly.
But in the end, only the low moans of the dying remained.
Zhou Yun rubbed his temples to make himself a little more energetic.
He stood behind the door and looked at the street through a small window on the door that was only a finger wide.
Corpses, the entire street was covered with corpses; some were corpses of local gang members, some were from the Ark Gang, and some were ordinary residents who couldn't get home in time.
Zhou Yun blinked.
He noticed a group of people wearing flaxen robes, with tail-flame spaceship symbols drawn on their faces with ink, moving the corpses of those who died yesterday.
Just like a group of diligent worker bees...
"Ark Gang?"
Zhou Yun frowned.
These people should be members of the Ark Gang; they were actually cleaning up corpses; they were quite civic-minded.
Did the Ark Gang win last night's battle?
He had just supplied the local gang with three hundred infantry autoguns for the PDF, and they were defeated overnight?
This was a bit too much of a scrub...
He took out the Superpower Hat from his Fourth-Dimensional Pocket and put it on his head.
Then he concentrated on his eyes and looked at the Ark Gang members outside the door.
Their flaxen robes, their skin and flesh, were all in Zhou Yun's eyes.
"They're humans..."
After confirming that these low-level Ark Gang members outside the door were all humans, Zhou Yun felt a slight relief in his heart.
He took off the Superpower Hat from his head, pushed open the door, and walked into the street.
Those Ark Gang members who were cleaning up corpses didn't pay special attention to Zhou Yun, just treating him as one of the crowd.
Even though a battle broke out last night, the streets of the Hive City were still crowded.
Busy workers shuttled through the narrow streets.
The corpses left on the ground were stepped over by people almost numbly.
Many corpses had already been half-embedded in the mud after a morning of trampling.
Life-and-death struggles between gangs were common, and workers were long used to it.
As long as they were still alive, they had to go to the factory to work.
Sometimes death wasn't the end of work.
In the galaxy, only the Hua Hua Hua Di Huang and work are eternal.
Zhou Yun noticed that on the mud not far away, a gang member's head was facing him with the back of its head.
There was a ferocious bullet hole on the neck of that head; it was clearly shot and broken by a bullet.
Its muscles were shriveled and gray, and it looked old; on the bit of cheek exposed, one could faintly see the mark of the local gang.
Under the trampling of passing pedestrians, this head had already half-sunk into the mud, like a hard, smelly stone protruding from the ground.
"Come, come, give me some space."
Zhou Yun waved his arms and squeezed out a little space in the crowded crowd.
He reached out and pulled the head up from the ground.
Half of the face of this head had been trampled into a pulp, half an eye hung outside the eye socket, and ghastly white bones were exposed between the flesh.
Looking at this ugly head, Zhou Yun shook his head with regret and expectation:
"Sure enough, it's not that old oil-slick Lage."
He glanced at the terrifying head in his hand.
"But it's handsomer than Lage."
Then he casually threw the head into the bag of the Ark Gang member cleaning up corpses by the side of the road, so as not to trip passing pedestrians.
The Ark Gang member looked at the head thrown into the bag and bowed to Zhou Yun politely to thank him.
Zhou Yun looked at his actions, and the corner of his eye twitched.
The more pure and kind these Ark Gang members were, the more he suspected they were a Genestealer Cult.
He looked at the street in front of him, always feeling that a strange atmosphere was permeating the street.
As if some kind of non-realistic mist was floating invisibly in the air.
"There is a residue of psyker power on the street," the winged figure in the white light said suddenly.
"Psyker..."
Zhou Yun was stunned for a moment, and his brow furrowed tighter.
No wonder, no wonder the local gang was defeated overnight.
There were actually psykers in the Ark Gang; it was getting more and more suspicious.
Zhou Yun shook his head, walked along the crowded street toward the west, passed through the arch made of scrap iron, and saw the huge stone statue of Sanguinius standing at the three-way intersection.
Many passing residents were prostrating themselves at the feet of the statue of Sanguinius, praying piously.
Zhou Yun shook his head and looked at the place pointed to by the sharp spear of Sanguinius.
Old One-Eye's tavern was open for business.
Zhou Yun pushed the door and entered, hearing a noisy commotion inside the tavern.
A worker who was half-drunk stepped on the table and told the story of what happened last night loudly:
"The leader of the Ark Gang took his men and only took half the night to kill his way to the doorstep of the local gang."
"But who would have thought that the gang boss in our area actually had three hundred infantry autoguns produced by Agrippina!"
The worker noticed the skeptical expressions of the people around him:
"Don't believe it; I saw it with my own eyes last night; it was exactly three hundred Agrippina Mark III infantry autoguns; I had the honor of seeing the PDF use them when I was young."
"After two or three rounds of shooting, the Ark Gang suffered heavy casualties, and for a time, they couldn't take this last stronghold."
He took a deep breath and said in a low voice:
"But just then, the leader of the Ark Gang walked out alone, without half a weapon."
"I only saw her chanting the Holy Scripture; those gang members holding infantry autoguns were all stunned on the spot."
"The leader raised her hands, raised her volume, and shouted: 'Put down your weapons,' and those gang members put down the infantry autoguns in their hands in unison."
"The leader declared: This is the Hua Hua Hua Di Huang's punishment for the unbelievers; she received the Hua Hua Hua Di Huang's blessing, established the Ark Gang, and helped the people of Ashford get salvation from the star-devils..."
Listening to the worker's bragging, Zhou Yun sat at the bar and looked at Old One-Eye.
Old One-Eye wiped the wine glass and poured a cup of blood-red bubbling wine for Zhou Yun.
"Did you find that notebook?" Old One-Eye handed the wine to Zhou Yun and asked.
Zhou Yun took a sip of the wine and shook his head: "How could it be that easy? I didn't even enter the Corpse Guild."
This was the truth of truths; he indeed didn't enter.
Old One-Eye sighed: "If you can't find it, you can't find it; it's indeed not easy."
"If even you can't find it, it seems there's no hope for this job."
As he spoke, Old One-Eye waved his hand and glanced at the worker who was bragging on the wine table.
"What do you think?" Old One-Eye asked Zhou Yun.
"Gang business, what does it have to do with us?" Zhou Yun poured a mouthful of wine into his mouth and said.
Old One-Eye grinned, glanced cautiously at the surroundings, leaned close to Zhou Yun's ear, and said in a low voice:
"Don't be as ignorant as them."
"You heard it, right? Psyker power; that leader of the Ark Gang is actually an illegal psyker."
