Chapter 58: Spitamini
Upon hearing Su Ya's question,
Lu Kan rummaged through his pack and produced a piece of sheepskin parchment covered with rows of encrypted symbols,
He compared it with the map for a while, then raised his hand and pointed to the spot between the two defensive lines marked as Plymouth and the Golden Iron Curtain, and said:
"Five days ago, the fifth day since the war began, the Conqueror King, after crushing Exeter, led fifty thousand troops to our second defensive line."
"She seized the gap in our high‑level combat power, personally joining the sage Aristotle beneath the Iron Wall, unleashing the King's Army Formation and Great Magic, the Luk'ang's Corridor, and together they wielded a power almost like a world of mental images."
"Under those twisted causal rules, our soldiers could only stand helplessly, and the entire fortress city was engulfed by a force described as 'an unimaginable army.'"
"In just ten minutes, the Conqueror King breached Plymouth, which was reputed to be Britannia's impregnable wall."
"After the Conqueror King shattered the second defensive line,"
"the eighty thousand troops withdrawn from Exeter and the fifty thousand defenders here suffered losses of more than half,"
"Then the Conqueror King personally led ten thousand companion cavalry, rushing to this plain, cutting off the retreating rout, and together with the Macedonian phalanx corps that arrived later, dealt another heavy blow to us using the Hammer‑and‑Anvil System."
Su Ya listened to Lu Kan's solemn narration as if it were a myth,
thinking to himself, "Isn't this cheating? How can the Conqueror King and Aristotle, a master‑disciple pair, still have a combo move?"
"Two people, ten minutes, breaking through 130 000 troops and a city?"
"No, gods!?"
"Even by the legends of the Conqueror King in the Fate world, it's not this outrageous; what the hell kind of world is this?"
Su Ya swallowed dryly, then forced himself to ask further:
"And then?"
"How many of us remain?"
Lu Kan took a deep breath and replied:
"Thirty thousand."
"Among them are five thousand Knights; they aren't the ones Dagonite brought out—those who could only do odd jobs and cook—five thousand of them, all Knights with cavalry or spearman roles!"
Lu Kan pointed at the location on the map once again,
Su Ya quickly recognized the place: it was the plain behind the hills where he first arrived after crossing, beyond a coastal mountainous and canyon region, stretching northeast until it met the Golden Iron Curtain.
"Now they are trapped here, constantly hiding using the near‑sea mountainous terrain."
Then,
Lu Kan traced an arc from that point to the left, his fingertip moving from the encircled spot, across the canyon, to the hills where Su Ya first crossed, then across the Bearn Territory,
until it reached their location at Pendeng Castle, forming a circle.
"These people should have been slaughtered by the Conqueror King within a week."
"But last night, after Sol City and Bestok fell, the signal from the beacon network showed—"
"the Conqueror King's great army is tightening its encirclement."
"Now they, the thirty‑thousand routed troops, like wild dogs driven by hunters, are forced to flee toward us."
At that point, Lu Kan fell silent for a moment, then strained to speak:
"But, as you can see, this is a dead end."
"And the choice we made to abandon them and let them flee has only brought us to the destination the Conqueror King has set for us ahead of time."
Having heard this,
Su Ya inhaled deeply, did not answer immediately, but closed his eyes and quickly constructed a rough terrain map in his mind, plotting both sides' positions, numbers and forces, continuously simulating various possibilities.
A oppressive atmosphere spread through the room.
Every face bore a hint of solemnity,
No one spoke; they all waited for Su Ya to speak.
Lu Kan and Dagonite both doubted Su Ya could devise an escape; they packed their gear, intending to head farther back, to Persia, which borders this world's Cornwall region of Britannia,
though they might encounter the terrifyingly large Macedonian logistical corps blocking that direction, or more bounty hunters, fleeing that way is essentially a dead end,
but any extra moment of life is still a moment,
if by luck they evade the detection eye, slipping away anonymously to Persia might actually save a life.
Although such a move, essentially surrendering to the enemy, disgraces the king's name, it still leaves a sliver of hope for a comeback.
After a long while,
Lu Kan shook his head, looked at Dagonite, and exchanged a glance with him,
they did not speak to dissuade Su Ya, but resumed the action they had paused, silently packing their bags.
And at that moment—
Su Ya opened his eyes,
and asked in a deep voice:
"Lord Lu Kan, Lord Dagonite, I want to know: what level can hero‑class combat power achieve against a fully organized army?"
"One against a thousand."
"And a semi‑hero?"
"One against a hundred."
"And a master?"
"They can only serve as junior officers in an army; a single person's strength is negligible before a force—like me, facing a squad of ten senior professionals, I would only flee in panic."
"Then, the hero in Cornwall, Seleucus—can we treat him as a thousand men? I mean, could a thousand hold him back and prevent the enemy from breaking through to behead?"
Dagonite thought for a moment and replied, "No problem."
After Su Ya pondered briefly,
he looked at the three of them, his voice steady, and asked, "Do we now have absolutely no way out?"
Lu Kan's hand movement paused, he slightly lifted his head, not quite understanding Su Ya's meaning, but in the end he gritted his teeth and replied:
"Almost none."
"We have no confidence in getting you safely to Persia."
Su Ya scratched his head,
"Persia, what Persia?"
He quickly dismissed this, and in a low voice said to the three people before him:
"We still have a fight!"
"As long as——we don't encounter a legendary figure whose strength cannot be estimated, that is, the Conqueror King you mentioned and her teacher, Aristotle."
Hearing this, the three all stared, somewhat bewildered looking at Su Ya,
Then, they heard him ask:
"Have you heard of Spitamenes?"
Mei Li and Dagonite repeated the name, their expressions somewhat bewildered.
While Lu Kan subconsciously replied: "You mean the Sogdian battle? That Persian hero?"
"Exactly!"
Su Ya looked at the map, at the canyon situated by the sea, and said in a low voice:
"The Battle of Sogdia in 329 BC, where Spitamenes broke through the encirclement of the Macedonian 70,000-strong army with a force of 28,000."
"We have more cavalry than Spitamenes, terrain more suited for guerrilla warfare, and a situation even more desperate than his."
"As long as we gather the remnants, win over the people's hearts, and pick the right moment."
"In this place, we can certainly try to recreate that great breakout!"
