Chapter 232: Monster Siege (Part 2)

~6 min read 1,112 words

Thunder, storm, meteorites, hail…

All kinds of area spells continuously slammed into the monster sea; the roars and cries of the beasts intertwined with the sound effects of spells, stimulating the players' nerves.

The first few waves of the Monster Siege mode were originally quite dull, and since it was still early, players usually just sent a small group to assist city defenses in slowing the advance, waiting for more players to log in before launching a counter-push until the boss appeared.

But today's tone was different—each round of spells had dazzling visual effects; Monster Siege, long mocked as resembling a street brawl, finally had the look of real war today.

Many players had already treated this event as an interactive movie, feeling the thunder radiating from their own palms, watching countless monsters vaporized into ash; even though it was fundamentally no different from repeatedly casting spells in past siege events, their hearts nonetheless burned with unexpected passion.

Not to mention the rising personal and team combat merits—even if you bought nothing, just watching the numbers climb gave a satisfying thrill.

As time passed, new players continued to log in, and the quality of the monster sea slowly increased; the legion's basic standardized spells could no longer eliminate the horde at medium to long range. As the monsters drew closer, the swordsmen raised their blades, the forces of (Qian) and (Li) intertwining—columns of light extended from the sword tips held upright before them, transforming into blades of light reaching from earth to sky.

"Ex-curry stick!"

Each light blade descended, instantly vaporizing monsters directly ahead—the Holy Sword Spell, formed by the swordsman's ultimate talent combined with Talisman and Spell, instantly drained the warrior's already meager mana bar.

There was no pause for guild players to regroup; next to arrive on the battlefield were the rogue scientist players!

Over the past half-month, players had accumulated countless research findings, but the usual monster density during grinding was nowhere near sufficient to justify their self-developed "ultimate skills"; in dungeons, bosses rarely gave them room to unleash them, and worse, spells cast via Talisman had no friendly-fire detection—sometimes one cast wiped out the entire team.

They possessed dragon-slaying techniques but could only cast them into empty air; this left many players seething with frustration.

Then, as Monster Siege began, they suddenly realized—

"Damn, this shitty dev was hiding this? Monster Siege was clearly designed for players to test their spells!"

"Infernal Dual Wave Cannon!"

"Destruction's Erupting Bai Guang!"

"Gale of Absolute Stillness Slash!"

One by one, cheesy names accompanied by dazzling light effects burst from players' hands—the sight of a single spell wiping out hundreds or thousands of monsters was utterly exhilarating.

"Cough, cough, cough—finally my turn!" The research fanatic, seeing the monster sea approach again, leapt down from the city gate tower; with a flash of green light, he appeared at the front line.

Just that single move triggered a flood of friend requests from players wanting to learn this cool mobility skill; those who had already enjoyed the front lines immediately stepped aside, giving the research master ample space to perform.

Everyone wanted to see what kind of exhibit this master—who had already developed so many spells half a month ago—could unveil today.

"Huh—"

Taking a deep breath, the research fanatic felt slightly nervous; the game's plot was trash, but its realism was unmatched—he could even feel sweat beading on his palms, yet more than that, it was the thrill of revealing his divine art before all!

"This game is finally getting good."

The research fanatic grabbed a handful of Talisman papers; as he switched skills, each sheet ignited, and a chaotic, indescribable light shimmered around him, then erupted into a beam of Bai Guang, shooting skyward.

"…"

Dead silence. Everyone watched as this master went through such a grand spectacle—only to release a skyrocket. The atmosphere instantly cooled; only the monster sea continued advancing.

As the distance narrowed to fifty meters, some players were already about to rush forward to intercept—when the research fanatic, as if expecting this, smiled and said—

"Don't rush—let the spell fly a bit longer!"

No sooner had he spoken than a beam of Bai Guang suddenly plummeted from the sky—not one, but ten! A hundred! A thousand!

Countless beams of light rained down like a storm, each like a blade, pinning the monsters below.

The splashing radiance seemed to ignite the sky; though it was a clear day, a faint angelic silhouette could be seen in the heavens—a figure of light and flame, an angel!

"Holy shit, you can shape it like this?"

Watching the extravagant light rain, players gaped; their own spells still showed traces of their original forms—the most complex were just three or four skills stitched together by switching Talismans and interrupting casts.

But this one? They had absolutely no idea what its origin was!

Just as everyone marveled at the effect, the angelic silhouette in the sky suddenly opened its arms—the radiance spread, diffused, and from its "embrace," a clearly defined flame-shaped sword fell vertically, piercing the earth and triggering a chain explosion; the shockwave forced the front-row spectators to stagger backward, and a mushroom cloud rose amid the monsters.

For a moment, not a single monster emerged from the inferno.

"Transcendent Magic: Angelic Descent!"

Only now did the research fanatic, his back turned to the approaching shockwave, name his self-developed spell—his robes fluttering violently in the hot wind, a sense of sheer aura rapidly mounting.

"Holy shit, fucking awesome!"

A chorus of "fucking awesome!" echoed endlessly; players, especially those who loved creative stunts, realized at this moment that the game's nature had changed.

If you said you spent money, I'd accept it—but we're all free-to-play; how the hell can you play so cool?

Once the human urge to compete kicks in, there's no limit; many players who enjoyed gear optimization suddenly shifted their mindsets.

"I have to say, this spell actually looks like the real deal!"

Suddenly, a voice—not loud, yet strikingly present, as if whispering directly into every ear—rose from the flames and smoke rising over the countless monster corpses (which had already respawned): a towering figure slowly stepped forward.

Armor fused from skeleton and dragon, its tail split into two from the midsection, shoulder plates resembling a split skull, and an aura of supreme dominance—all proved this was a top-tier boss!

"Damn, is the boss out this early?"

"Obviously—normally we don't even clear the trash until afternoon!"

Players erupted into noise again—but then fell utterly silent, for on the right hand of the demon-dragon boss, a tiny yet heart-stopping light point pulsed, expanding and contracting in a counterintuitive rhythm…
