Chapter 62: Newbies Really Lack Experience

~7 min read 1,395 words

As Liu Yunxi complained, bulges had already begun appearing on the metal door; even a mansion for the wealthy couldn’t withstand much with this era’s steel output, and under such tremendous force, it wouldn’t hold much longer.

Seeing this, Feng Xue’s mind raced—he couldn’t run, and none of the doors inside the house would likely hold against this strength.

“To hell with it!” Feng Xue gritted his teeth; that reckless, all-or-nothing spirit from his cross-realm days surged once more. He pulled out the jade seal and channeled Qi into it, instantly summoning Mo Ying from the ink scroll in the bedroom.

“I’ll pour some Qi into you—go to the county and find help. Shout at any martial arts school or rice shop—you need experts or the county magistrate. If you can’t find anyone, just scream ‘zombies!’ on the streets—but fly high, don’t let them mistake you for a demon and destroy you!”

Before she could speak, Mo Ying was already hit with Feng Xue’s rapid-fire instructions—but she reacted swiftly. Feeling the Qi flooding into her body, she nodded and flew straight through the ceiling.

Seeing Mo Ying act without needing further explanation, Feng Xue exhaled in relief, then pulled out a jade tablet inscribed with 【Jin】 and rushed to the door, dumping all his Qi into it.

“Stick this on the door—it’ll hold longer!”

Feng Xue shoved the jade tablet into Liu Yunxi’s hand, then began pulling incense, candles, and an altar from his storage pouch, maintaining Qi flow to the tablet while hastily constructing the ritual platform nearby.

As he built, he asked:

“What’s the actual situation? Weren’t we told it was zombies and ghosts? Where’s the ghost? Did it already get inside? And how did you make the zombie keep banging on the door like a stubborn fool?”

“Of course I tied it up!” Liu Yunxi gripped the jade tablet inscribed with 【Jin Shen Zhou】, instantly feeling the pressure ease. She kept pushing against the door and said:

“You think I’m standing here just to hold the door? Don’t you see the dog leash in my hand? But hurry up—this little demon with only three years of cultivation can’t hold out much longer!”

Hearing this, Feng Xue finally looked over his shoulder and saw the taut, moon-white rope in Liu Yunxi’s hand, glowing softly like moonlight.

Not fully understanding her meaning, he stepped closer to the nearest window, using the shoulder-view’s two-meter out-of-body range to peer outside—and saw a grotesque scene:

A zombie in classic official robes stood at the door, violently slashing at the golden-glowing door with its claws. On its shoulder sat a woman’s head—neck and half-shoulder attached—staring at the door with venomous hatred; those blood-red eyes alone made one shudder.

But the most striking sight was the white light-rope extending from behind the door, wrapping around the zombie’s and the red-eyed demon’s necks like a couple’s scarf—just like a dog leash, restraining both.

Yet from how each movement of the zombie tugged the rope, it was clear the demon’s Qi barely bound the zombie at all—it was only because the ghost was tethered that neither could leave the doorway.

Understanding this, Feng Xue relaxed slightly—at least for now, things wouldn’t spiral out of control.

He grabbed the iron rod by the wall, meant for thieves, and placed it before the altar. Pouring Qi into the jade tablet inscribed with 【Zhan】, silver-white light flowed into the rod as the tablet scraped its surface, and Feng Xue carefully controlled his Qi, using the two candlesticks as guides to seal the 【Zhan Yao Zhou】’s exorcism power inside the rod.

Just like his earlier tested seal, when a spirit-imbued effect meant to last months was transferred to another object, its duration dropped to seconds. So while using the jade tablet alone to output Qi worked fine, actually enhancing other items required an extra casting of the spirit-imbuing spell to stabilize it—otherwise, Feng Xue wouldn’t have needed to continuously feed Qi to the 【Jin Shen Zhou】 tablet just to maintain the door’s hardened state.

Of course, at this moment he could’ve simply locked the 【Spirit Imbuing】 spell to easily coat the rod with a thin outer layer—though weaker than direct imbuing, it would slow Qi leakage. But Feng Xue dared not unlock his lifespan lock, so he had to rely on his half-baked 【Spirit Imbuing】 incantation. Thankfully, after days of practice, he could now sustain it for over ten minutes—plenty for a short fight.

With a weapon ready, Feng Xue pulled out two jade tablets inscribed with 【Su】 and slipped them into his shoes. There was no need to specially imbue the 【Divine Step】 spell—when fleeing, just dump Qi into the shoes.

Fully prepared, Feng Xue redirected his Qi to reinforce the 【Jin Shen Zhou】 energy on the door.

Seeing this, Liu Yunxi panicked.

“What’s the point of hardening the door? It’s only banging because I’ve tied it up! When my demon Qi runs out, it’ll just break in somewhere else!”

“That’s why I haven’t finished yet—” Feng Xue began, but then saw the moon-white glow on Liu Yunxi’s body dimming and flickering—he froze.

“You’re kidding.”

“Who told you to cripple me? I’ve only three years of cultivation—I can suppress the red-eyed demon, but add a hundred-year corpse? I can’t hold it!”

Liu Yunxi’s voice now carried a hint of dark amusement, as if she didn’t care if she died.

Feng Xue was used to her “complaining but acting” behavior—if she truly wanted him dead, she wouldn’t be holding the door.

So…

“Here!”

“Huh?” Liu Yunxi stared at the “shiny silver rod” Feng Xue shoved into her hands, momentarily stunned. Feng Xue rolled his eyes.

“I can’t fight—you’ve the strength, your own protective artifact. You’ve got to be up front! Hold onto the tablet too—I’ll keep feeding you the 【Jin Shen Zhou】—at least your hand gripping it can be a shield!”

“Who asked me to owe you?” Liu Yunxi sighed, shaking her head helplessly, then took the iron rod—too hot for her hands—and turned back.

“When you’re ready, say the word—I’ll open the door.”

“Alright, let me refill my Qi.”

“Don’t—”

Before Liu Yunxi could stop him, a surge of Yuan Qi leaked from Feng Xue’s body. His already full spirit greedily gulped it down—suddenly, a rain of Qi poured into his spiritual sea, forming streams. Only then did Feng Xue ask:

“You were going to say what…?”

“Too late!” Liu Yunxi sighed as a piercing female shriek erupted outside—the entire house trembled.

The already faint demon rope snapped. The ambient Yuan Qi vanished as if sucked into a pump.

“…“ Feng Xue instantly knew what he’d done. He opened his mouth to speak—but Liu Yunxi had already darted in front of him. The next moment, glass shattered as a figure crashed into the room!

About the spirit-controlling artifact…

The protagonist makes many artifacts because the 【Summon Object】 technique marks them, so he never picks the wrong one—he keeps them all together. Even identical artifacts may exist in multiples due to function—for example, the 【Divine Step】 spell: he doesn’t plan to master it deeply, but it’s too useful. To avoid his poor control holding him back, he made two, placing one in each shoe—just dump Qi in and use it, no need to split it evenly.

But the 【Spirit Control】 spell is different. As mentioned, many spells are composite, but the protagonist can only lock one at a time. So for spells with clearly separated functions, he must split them—【Spirit Control】 is one such case.

Normally, if the original (like the scroll) is nearby, he just issues commands and transmits Qi directly.

But if it’s not, Feng Xue can use a spirit-bonded seal to remotely summon the spirit (once his skill is sufficient), transmit Qi, and call it to his side.

And earlier, holding the jade tablet to activate 【Spirit Control】 was another method. As noted, spirit ghosts can serve as Qi carriers to enhance spell effects—but the protagonist must maintain 【Life Lock】, so transforming Qi requires the jade tablet artifact.

It’s like a TV and set-top box: the jade seal is the TV remote—it wakes the spirit, summons it, even charges it. The jade tablet is the set-top box remote—it decides which channel you watch.

Of course, he also made backup spirit-bonded jade tablets (the ones inscribed with ghosts).
