Chapter 315: The World in Turmoil, Misfortune Strikes When the Roof Is Leaking

~6 min read 1,172 words

Seeing the photo's content, Kamikawa Mitsu jolted upright.

"What's the status from the Shield Advisory Team?" Kamikawa Mitsu asked his assistant at once.

The Shield Advisory Team is a division of the U. S. Supernatural Response Department, composed of scientists, historians, theologians, Marvel artists, DC artists, and others—similar to Professor Zhongtian and his team in Japan's Supernatural Response Department.

As for why it's called the Shield Advisory Team, Kamikawa Mitsu named it himself, because he thought SHIELD from Marvel was cool and functionally similar to the real-world Supernatural Response Department, so he chose that name.

Because of this, the U. S. Supernatural Response Department no longer calls itself that—it was ordered by Kamikawa Mitsu to be renamed the Shield Bureau.

"Our personnel sent there haven't yet reached the site for detection; we can't make a concrete judgment yet, but we can't rule out that the situation in Nebraska is identical to the mysterious mist—likely 'the others' are exploiting the opening."

The assistant's expression was Solemn.

Mentioning the mysterious mist and 'the others,' Kamikawa Mitsu's eyelid twitched.

He gave an order.

"Closely monitor the situation in Nebraska. If there's any sign of expansion, notify me immediately. Also, shut down tourism and visits to Nebraska, deploy troops for garrisoning, and strictly prevent ordinary citizens from approaching Nebraska."

"Also, inform all nations. Send the detection data on Nebraska's anomalies to every country. Assign General Chas full authority over Nebraska."

This isn't about competing for economic or other interests—it's a supernatural event involving 'the others.' The danger isn't confined to the U. S. but concerns all nations and the entire globe.

Just like the mysterious mist, which keeps expanding and threatens the globe, all nations have cooperated in response.

Nebraska is highly likely to be just like the mysterious mist—a global threat. Kamikawa Mitsu must take it seriously, and he has no time to worry about whether leaking this information is appropriate; such hesitation would be tantamount to suicide.

"I'll notify them right away."

The assistant turned and hurried out—the urgency left no room for delay—when suddenly someone ran up to the door.

It was an intelligence officer.

He didn't even knock. Seeing only Kamikawa Mitsu and the assistant inside, he blurted out:

"The mysterious mist has undergone a new anomaly: abnormal changes have occurred in Shikoku, Japan, and the surrounding seas. Classified as a supernatural event—conditions resemble those in Nebraska."

Kamikawa Mitsu and the assistant froze, their faces turning pale.

…

Japan.

Shikoku, also known as Shikoku Island, lies in southwestern Honshu and is one of Japan's administrative regions.

At this moment.

Near the town close to Shishan in central Shikoku Island.

On streets, rooftops, highways, countless people had stopped walking or driving, all staring toward Shishan.

Many had already pulled out their phones to film the sudden changes above Shishan.

"What's that? Is it about to rain?"

"White clouds with lightning? Could the government be running some experiment?"

"I don't think so—it looks more like a supernatural being undergoing tribulation. Look, the white clouds are crackling with lightning."

The crowd murmured in confusion.

Ahead, not far off.

Above Shishan, though no dark clouds gathered—only pure white clouds—white lightning struck down, thunder roaring, boom—boom—each flash tore across the sky as the clouds slowly disintegrated.

Lightning was dense, concentrated in one spot overhead, interweaving like a spiderweb.

It looked like a transparent sphere a kilometer in diameter, filled with countless lightning bolts crisscrossing, faintly radiating terrifying ripples that made the sky seem to warp.

On the other side.

Near Japan's seas.

On a fishing boat out at sea, fishermen stared in horror at the ocean ahead.

There, cracks spread everywhere—like lightning, stretching a kilometer across the sea surface, splitting it open.

Hss!

Inside the cracks, darkness swallowed all sight; occasional black lightning shot outward, a spectacular, heart-stopping sight.

Countless black lightning bolts surged upward from the sea cracks, unleashing violent energy that churned the surrounding waters into raging waves.

This sight terrified the fishermen.

If the earth had cracked, they might not have been so shocked—ground fissures aren't rare; earthquakes, underground gas pipe explosions, and more can cause them.

But this wasn't the earth—it was the sea.

The sea surface had cracked? Never seen before. And it wasn't just cracking—the water didn't rush in. It looked like a surface crack, but upon closer look, the fissures were pitch-black, deep and dark, clearly not a simple surface rupture.

And strange black lightning emerged from within.

"It's not the sea surface cracking!"

Soon, some fishermen realized—the sea cracks weren't the ocean splitting, but space itself rupturing. Since space clung tightly to the sea surface, it appeared as if the sea had cracked.

Similar anomalies occurred in other Japanese waters.

On a small island, no more than a kilometer in diameter, where land met sea, a beach suddenly burst into Xiong Xiong flames.

They appeared out of nowhere—flames roared, glowing with a deep blue hue, as if hellfire had burned through the boundary between the mortal world and the netherworld, descending to consume all.

Above a certain stretch of sea.

Ripples spread, as if a giant stone had been thrown into a calm lake, sending out waves.

A seagull flew overhead, passing just as the disturbance appeared.

A strange sight occurred.

The seagull spread its wings, flew into that spot—and vanished, as if diving into water. Above the surface, no trace remained; it flew in, its body disappearing from head to tail into the sky.

…

Tokyo, Japan. Supernatural Response Department.

With four locations showing anomalies, Director Saito's phone was ringing nonstop; the entire department was overwhelmed with work.

"Damn it, has the old saying about Gengzi year bringing great calamity really been proven? Good things don't come, but bad ones come in pairs."

Director Saito rubbed his temples.

The mysterious mist had already driven Japan to despair, and now such incidents were occurring across the country—Director Saito and others were nearly driven mad.

"Have Suzuki Space sent troops to Shikoku yet? If they have, tell them to evacuate all residents within sixty li of Shishan to prevent casualties, and have the Maritime Self-Defense Force seal off the seas around those three locations."

The mysterious mist was expanding, and every nation was sending personnel; as Japan's highest commander of the Supernatural Response Division, Director Takahashi naturally went himself.

Thus, command of the Supernatural Response Division fell to the second-in-command, Director Saito.

At first, Director Saito had thought Director Takahashi had drawn the hard duty by going to the mysterious mist—but now it seemed he himself was the one stuck with it.

"Notify the United Nations of what's happening in Japan. With our current military strength, we cannot handle these widespread anomalies—request that other nations send personnel to assist."

"Hey!"

"To prevent panic, I've already ordered my subordinates to hold a press conference. Remember to pick the positive angles—don't let the people fall into panic."

"I'll go prepare right away."

……

(PS: There might only be one update today—I have to go sweep graves; it's too far away. I'll resume three updates tomorrow.)
