Chapter 405

~7 min read 1,319 words

Kamikawa Mitsu saw the man in blue robes and the double-pupiled prodigy part ways—not by traveling back through time to witness it, nor by peering into the past from the present.

He merely saw it within someone else's memory.

One could say that from start to finish, he had never appeared in the past, nor peered into it—he had only watched a fragment of another's memory.

But the man in blue robes had seen it.

Even for gods and demons, immortals and devils, this was a terrifying revelation—it was no longer merely transcending life and death, or achieving immortality; Kamikawa Mitsu believed not even an immortal being could pierce this truth.

Because he was merely watching another's memory.

Yet the man in blue robes, in that era, had seen through it—he had seen that someone from the future was watching this moment through memory.

Every time he recalled it, Kamikawa Mitsu's heart gave a violent jolt.

No wonder he reacted this way—even if any other person, even an immortal being, had witnessed it, they would have been startled.

Imagine you're watching a fragment of someone's memory—perhaps even a dead person's memory—and as you watch, the figure within that memory suddenly comes alive, no longer just a memory, but a living being, staring back at you, knowing you are watching the memory—wouldn't you be terrified?

Someone with a weak heart would drop dead on the spot.

Even immortals and devils would feel their flesh tremble and their souls bristle.

…

Earth.

Tokyo, Japan, Supernatural Response Division.

Director Takahashi and the others frowned, their faces grim, brows heavy with helplessness.

The gods, demons, and immortals had entered the altar at the heart of the ancient Babylonian mythic realm some time ago.

At first, various nations had sent aerial drones into it, unwilling to miss this opportunity, and equally unwilling to surrender the relics of the Primordial Realm to the invading gods, demons, and immortals.

Ancient Babylonian mythology had betrayed the Primordial Realm, betrayed the past—but that was merely a matter of standpoint; they were still myths of the Primordial Realm.

It was absolutely unacceptable to let the myths of the Primordial Realm fall into the hands of other worlds—especially into those who had invaded the Primordial Realm; this was a desecration of the Primordial Realm, a blatant slap in the face.

Yet.

After entering, as they went deeper, the drones exploded one after another under the thick, suffocating death energy.

For a time, all nations lost control of the situation inside the altar, unaware of what was happening within.

Though they repeatedly sent drones inside, all of them exploded.

In the end, they even dispatched suicide squads—but the squads fared worse than the drones; upon entry, they were immediately tainted by death energy, going either mad or dead.

All nations were at a loss.

The only comfort was that the Demon Lord, the Void Lord, and others had also entered the altar.

"All we can do now is pray that the Demon Lord and the others seize the opportunity," Director Takahashi sighed, silently praying.

The suicide squads and drones were all dead; the nations had no intention of taking further action.

After all, sending more would only mean more deaths—a pure waste of resources. They could only wait, instructing satellites to monitor the ancient Babylonian mythic realm's movements constantly and report any activity immediately.

As the saying goes, as long as the sky hasn't fallen, life goes on.

With the loss of updates from the ancient Babylonian mythic realm, many people simply woke up each day, refreshed their news feeds, checked for new developments, and if there were none, returned to their routines—working, attending tutoring classes.

More people, however, were focused on another matter—the current whereabouts and fate of Kamikawa Mitsu.

The world was not afraid of the otherworldly invasion, because the great gods of the initial battlefield already knew—there was no need to fear the gods, demons, and immortals of other worlds attacking the Primordial Realm.

All of this rested on Kamikawa Mitsu luring away the otherworldly gods, demons, and immortals.

Without him, one could not say what would happen to Earth—but as for all of humanity, at least fifty percent would be captured by the otherworldly gods, demons, and immortals, their fates uncertain.

"Has there been any news about Kamikawa Mitsu?"

Director Takahashi rubbed his temples, looked up at Yoshimura Yoshimura, and froze.

He scanned the conference room, puzzled:

"Huh? Where's Yoshimura? Wasn't he just here?"

He'd been staring at the large screen and hadn't noticed when Yoshimura Yoshimura had left.

Director Saito and the others had also not noticed.

"Yoshimura went to fetch the investigation report," Morita Takeshi spoke up suddenly.

"Huh?"

All eyes turned to him.

"What investigation report?" Director Takahashi sat up straight.

The Supernatural Response Division was established specifically to handle supernatural matters; an investigation report naturally meant an investigation into the supernatural—but the scope of investigations was vast.

Though Japan was not as large as China, it frequently experienced supernatural events, widely rumored, sometimes even making headlines; Japan's urban legends were the best proof.

Basically, Japan had an urban legend every few days.

Thus, the Supernatural Response Division was far from a leisurely department; its junior staff had tasks daily—either visiting sites or conducting investigations, constantly busy, and crucially, often at risk of death.

One could say the Supernatural Response Division was Japan's civil servants' most loved and most hated department.

They loved it because it offered the rarest chance to encounter the supernatural—the most direct path to such encounters.

They hated it—no need to explain—supernatural beings weren't all benevolent; who knew if the one you encountered was a demon, a monster, or a ghost? One misstep, and your life was over.

Thus, a peculiar situation emerged across Japan and other nations.

Young people all wanted to grow up and join the Supernatural Response Division; adults, however, fiercely opposed it.

"It's about the investigation into the Ashiya family where Kamikawa Mitsu resides."

"You mean the investigation into whether the Ashiya family has ties to China?"

Currently, the only investigation concerning Kamikawa Mitsu was whether the Ashiya family had any connection to China.

Ashiya Doman's origins had always been a mystery; previously, Director Takahashi and the others had debated this, and through a series of clues, they deduced that Ashiya Doman might originate from Chinese mythology.

For this reason, they had specifically dispatched personnel to China to investigate.

This investigation has been going on for quite some time, but there had been no progress until now.

Never expected there'd be a breakthrough today.

Just as he was thinking, Yoshimura Murakichi came back clutching a report.

"Director Takahashi, big discovery, a heaven-shaking big discovery! We finally know why Kamikawa Mitsu is so incredible — his bloodline isn't just Ashiya Doman, it's far more than that!"

Yoshimura Murakichi spoke excitedly, eyes aglow — anyone who didn't know better would think he'd taken stimulants.

Clearly, he had already read the investigation report.

Director Takahashi and the others shuddered — the Ashiya clan truly was connected to Huaguo mythology!!

The next moment.

They couldn't wait to speak up.

"What big discovery? Is the Ashiya clan really a force from Huaguo mythology?"

"Bloodline? Could Ashiya Doman be some great figure from Huaguo?"

"Yoshimura, are you sure the report's results are accurate? Don't get it wrong."

Everyone chimed in at once, some even jolting to their feet in shock.

Yoshimura Murakichi thumped his chest: "Accuracy's pretty high, shouldn't be wrong."

"Then hurry up and tell us," Director Takahashi and the others said in unison.

Yoshimura Murakichi didn't play coy either — playing coy here would get him beaten to death — and hurriedly handed out photocopies of the report to everyone present, then began.

"According to the investigators' findings, the Ashiya clan is suspected to be descendants of Chiyou, a great figure from the primordial era."

"What did you say?!"
