Chapter 128: Who Exactly is the Wisdom Church?
The matter of the two sisters meant nothing to the busy Coking Plant; in a single day and night, the players had smelted several furnaces of molten iron, and their condition was only getting better.
After all, these were players with the bonus of modern technology. Early in the morning, Ruide Huai'en crawled out from under his covers, drew a basin of water from a bucket, washed up, and walked out of the room.
His room had just been built; although simple, it was very comfortable.
These guys seemed to have a special talent for building houses. The bricks they fired were much more useful than the stones commonly used by the commoners of Tana City, and the roofs were of a special structure, built very securely, with no need to worry about the problem of collapse.
Walking out the door, these guys were already starting to work. The purchased wood was being transported to the storage area by serfs under other nobles, and several Xiahui People were directing them. All the kilns were emitting smoke; some people were transporting iron slag, others were building new kilns, and still others were building houses not far away.
Breakfast was also being cooked on the busy construction site. For some reason, these Xiahui People placed great importance on raising chickens and ducks; every morning there was a basket of eggs to eat, and the breakfast they made was also very good. Over these past few days, Ruide felt he had already put on some weight.
"Buddy, you've come at just the right time." Zhongshan Laoren waved at Ruide. "We had a few more apprentices arrive yesterday. Take a look at their talent; if it's okay, we are willing to pay the tuition to let them learn your techniques."
"No problem." Ruide said while eating a xiaolongbao, "We have to start picking up the pace today. Besides your own orders, I also received an order from the Wisdom Church here. They need a batch of nails; I think you guys can make this yourselves."
"Then I'll assign twenty people to work with you. The hammers we made yesterday are all ready to be used." Zhongshan Laoren was very busy—much busier than he was offline—but he was enjoying it. "We are also starting to forge cookware ourselves; by noon, you'll be able to eat the stir-fried dishes I mentioned."
"Then I'm really looking forward to it, haha." Before Ruide had finished eating, he saw a group of half-grown children arriving at the construction site by carriage.
These children were all teenagers aged 13-14, totaling twenty-three, all said to be orphans adopted by Andrew White.
It had to be said that Andrew was a very kind person. Ruide looked at the children who had gotten off the carriage. "Have they eaten? You can't forge iron on an empty stomach."
"They've already eaten; the orphanage's breakfast is about the same as ours." Zhongshan Laoren said, grabbing the hand of the driver who had transported the children. "Thank you for your hard work. You can have a breakfast here before you go; this is your pay."
"That would be great." The carriage driver said with satisfaction. It wasn't his first time delivering people here, and every time he could eat the delicious food here.
These Xiahui People really knew how to enjoy themselves; whether it was breakfast or dinner, the food here was better than the restaurants in town.
The children looked at everything here with curiosity. They were all devout Believers, and they all knew that the people here were all Believers of Calamity, except for this blacksmith named Ruide.
"Very good, your bodies are all sturdy. It seems our great philanthropist has taken good care of you." Ruide gave a brief self-introduction. "I am a blacksmith, and I have lived in Tana City since I was a child. From now on, you will follow me to learn the craft and carry forward this Steel Plant."
"Yes!" The children said with their heads held high and chests puffed out.
These children really had spirit; Andrew was truly a good philanthropist.
Ruide brought the children to the coking area and looked at the pot of charcoal that had just come out of the furnace today.
"After these charcoals are fully burned, they can make the temperature of the Steelmaking Furnace reach over 900 degrees, and adding them to the steel can also make the steel stronger." Ruide taught the children according to his own experience. "Come, let's go take a look at the steelmaking area..."
Chen Zhi observed Ruide's movements with satisfaction. This guy was a worker through and through; every day his mind was filled with forging iron, and he was completely unaware of how wrong these players and Andrew were.
He even lived with the players without discovering the players' problems.
Not a single sound of snoring all night had the slightest effect on this blacksmith.
By comparison, the Wisdom Church was much more vigilant.
After discovering that commoners were starting to flow toward a place called the Huai'te Fuliyuan, the Wisdom Church had already begun to be alert.
A young student who looked quite young knocked on the door of the orphanage, and a somewhat disabled Titan opened the door for him, then asked, "Sir, I wonder what you need?"
"It's like this, I want to adopt a child." The young man said confidently. "I heard this is an orphanage, isn't it?"
"Yes, yes." The Titan let the young man in and then closed the door again. "We have to keep the door closed, otherwise these children will run around. It would be troublesome if they ran out."
"Understandable." The young man introduced himself. "My name is Santos Price, and I am a Scholar. I currently teach at Lancaster University, teaching mathematics."
The Titan's eyes lit up as he said, "That's wonderful. We are very willing to get to know someone as knowledgeable as you. These children also very much hope to learn knowledge."
Could it be that they were also Believers of Wisdom?
Santos followed the Titan into the courtyard. The children had many recreational facilities; several young people were building a seesaw for these children, and the slide on the side was basically finished. Some of the younger children were playing.
There were also children swinging under the trees. These children were all wearing uniforms of the same style and looked very happy.
Inside the building were rooms one after another. The larger rooms were classrooms, where an older female teacher was teaching phonetics to a dozen or so school-age children. Those children looked to be about eight years old, and each of them had a charcoal pencil in their hand and a somewhat rough-looking notebook used for recording.
Santos was a little confused for a moment; even the Wisdom Church would not teach children to learn knowledge so thoroughly.
They would have the children accompany the adults to glue boxes or wash clothes during the day, and then come to learn cultural knowledge at night—that is, night school.
Or they would learn in night school every weekend.
After all, if they didn't learn, it would be difficult for them to become qualified workers. Every year, commoners died due to improper mechanical operation simply because they had no knowledge at all.
