Chapter 150
The war horn sounded long, and the cavalry stirred.
Mei Yi rode Benz, leading by several horse lengths, and was the first to charge into the enemy through the gaps in the apple forest.
The cavalry behind her restrained their shouts until Mei Yi saw the enemy and let out a loud roar.
The roar rang out, and the inexplicable bitter cold was gone.
"Enemy attack, defend!" shouted the Lesweil cavalry commander.
"Form up defenses! The enemy only has two hundred!" she heard the enemy soldiers shout, and it seemed to calm the Lesweil troops considerably.
"Ugh..." Geluofo's dull war horn sounded after dozens of breaths, turning them from the initial raiders into disruptors, as the vast majority of the army's cavalry engaged in disruption.
Since Geluofo could no longer work with the Mao Mao Dog, the natural choice for the raiding party was for Mei Yi to take on the role herself.
To seize the initiative, Mei Yi herself had to take on the role of the Mao Mao Dog.
She wasn't worried about that; she could outperform an Arctic Wolf. The only issue was that she was a humanoid female, unable to frighten warhorses by appearance or scare ordinary soldiers.
Perhaps it would have the opposite effect: cowards would gain courage, and the greedy would be stirred to seek honor.
No.
They will eventually realize that she is even more like an Arctic Wolf than the Arctic Wolf itself.
As she charged out of the apple forest, she angrily hurled a fish spear, which flew swift as electricity and instantly pierced the leading cavalryman.
The cavalryman fell backward, knocking over the cavalryman beside him.
The warhorses panicked, lifting their forelegs high; suddenly the cavalrymen were thrown backward off their mounts, the warhorses rolled over and fell, continuing to knock over the cavalrymen behind.
A little chaos was expected.
The squad commander ignored it, he and his guards immediately dismounted, raised their swords, and slaughtered the struggling warhorses on the ground; within a few breaths the unit regained its calm.
"Apple Forest, launch!" the squad commander shouted after finishing that, and immediately ordered a volley of spears to be hurled by the cavalry.
Mei Yi spurred Benz to greater speed, narrowly avoiding a deadly blow; then a spear grazed the horse's hindquarters, hurting it, and it bolted even faster toward the cavalry.
Mei Yi focused her spirit on the horse, commanding it to keep accelerating, galloping ever faster toward the crowded cavalry.
At the moment of contact, Mei Yi leapt ahead and jumped down from the horse.
The warhorse, carrying great momentum, surged into the enemy ranks; cavalry and horse were violently struck again. The horse screamed in pain, rolled, and the knights were thrown off, shouting in shock; the rear warhorses also got spooked, shying away, and several cavalrymen were shoved into the lake by the startled horses retreating ahead.
Mei Yi drew forth her passion, leapt from the horse, and charged alone into the chaotic cavalry, hacking left and right; neither leather nor mail, nor arms nor pauldrons could withstand her; in the wake of her fervor lay splashing blood and severed limbs, making her appear like a bloodthirsty demon.
Blood Wolf Woman.
"Kill her!" shouted another cavalryman who appeared to be a higher-ranking commander, pointing at Mei Yi.
His left and right cavalrymen whipped their whips to push aside the neighboring cavalry, spurred their horses through the gap in the melee, and thrust their spears straight at her.
Several spears came flying at her.
Mei Yi paid no heed, brandishing her sword and madly reaping through the chaotic cavalry.
Blood spurted, cries of pain and fear filled the air.
When the spear-wielding cavalry approached, Mei Yi's following cavalry had already charged out of the apple forest, led by the boys George and Tao Ha, who mounted from the side and crashed straight into the cavalry charging at Mei Yi.
Mei Yi left the frightened and disordered cavalry to the side, handing them over to Kong Qi Kong Dun and the other cavalry who had caught up.
Crossbow bolts rained down like a forest, and they never drew their swords against the disordered troops.
Mei Yi quickly stepped forward toward where the boys were, easily cutting down the sword-wielding soldiers knocked down by the boys' charge, leaving only one enemy struggling beneath a warhorse.
One of the newly enlisted boys raised his knife, tilted his head, and chopped off his neck.
Mei Yi supported the boys from her right side, blocking enemy soldiers attacking them and incoming spears.
They were supposed to be the surprise force after Luofu's raid, but instead they became the first to launch an offensive raid; judging by battle results, their role was not bad.
The boys beside her turned to hunt down the cavalry and fleeing soldiers that Mei Yi had thrown into disarray.
"Uuu..." the Luofu cavalry war horn continued to blow.
Mei Yi cast aside the enemies behind her, raced north along the lakeside road, and faced the enemy commander stationed to the south.
The commander was fully armored; in the dim background, Mei Yi could barely tell whether his armor was blue or gray, nor could she discern whether its shape resembled a warhorse or a coyote.
The commander surely noticed Mei Yi; he quickly shouted to the rear, ignoring the cavalry still pouring out of the forest, mobilizing the nearby knights to hurl their spears at Mei Yi.
Mei Yi gracefully dodged.
"Charge at the mongrels!" the commander shouted to his left and right, "They only have a hundred left! Kill her, and everything will be over!"
Left and right cavalry surged from behind, trampling over corpses and warhorses, straight for Mei Yi.
"Form up the remaining troops!" the other commander pressed down several soldiers' spears and shouted angrily, "Hold the line!"
Luofu's cavalry, which he led, had already surged out from the other side, and Mei Yi could already hear the sound of their engagement.
Luofu's forces were even stronger.
Defeated cavalry kept streaming south from the north.
In the wake of the rout, the scattered outer cavalry frantically retreated into the apple forest; some managed to slip through the gaps between trees, while others, panicking, tripped over branches and were then cut down by pursuing cavalry.
The remaining enemy troops, under repeated cavalry charges, had formed small spear phalanxes; the cavalry dismounted, raised their small cavalry shields, formed a phalanx, kept time, and marched down the road to repel the charging cavalry.
When the phalanx passed a stretch of road, they picked up spears and, keeping rhythm, threw them at the raiding cavalry at the right moment.
No one in the unit carried a shield; to be hit was to be an unlucky chosen one.
Mei Yi believed that Luofu or other officers would quickly adjust their tactics in this situation; if they continued to launch reckless raids, then Mei Yi would have nothing to say.
As for the Lesweil cavalry, in the narrow terrain they switched to infantry tactics; Mei Yi both admired and despised them.
Although they quickly reversed the passive situation, turning a swift annihilation battle into cavalry harassment and a war of attrition, they had utterly lost any chance of victory—unless Mei Yi, heedless, led light cavalry to break through the spear-and-short-shield defense, unless they could swiftly rally nearby cavalry for rescue.
If they could not be brought into the offensive fight in time, Mei Yi would only have to face the fleeing cavalry.
If this battle ended here, Mei Yi would already have won; all that remained was for her to decide whether to win big or small.
"Sir Kong Qi, lead your cavalry to hunt down the fleeing enemies; Sir Bolong, gather the scattered horsemen nearby and pursue the enemy troops, making sure not to let any escape." Mei Yi wiped the blood from her face and yanked George, who was about to charge at the spear, away.
"Looking for death? Get on the horse, follow me!" Mei Yi picked up the spear, threw it at the troop formation, a soldier fell at the sound, then the soldiers behind instantly filled the gap, plugging the breach, and soon we saw them pushing the dead bodies toward the lake.
Mei Yi prepared to temporarily give up each tough obstacle.
Mei Yi rode her warhorse, passing by the semicircular formations hastily assembled by Lesweil's cavalry.
Ownerless warhorses scattered in the apple forest, far from the battlefield, then lingered in the woods, curiously watching the soldiers' charge.
Mei Yi led a few youths swiftly across the battlefield, launching a rear attack on the enemy's semicircular defense formation still engaged with Lord Luo Fu.
Mei Yi again focused her spirit on the warhorse, commanding it to charge swiftly at the enemy formation facing Ge Luo Fu; then, Mei Yi leapt from the rolling warhorse, drew forth her enthusiasm, and coordinated with Ge Luo Fu's cavalry to carry out the slaughter.
Blood drenched Mei Yi's whole body, making her look like a war god stained in blood.
"Lord Luo Fu, lead the cavalry; aside from a few cavalry harassing the battle formation, the rest quickly mop up the fleeing enemy soldiers." Mei Yi gazed at her own cavalry strewn with casualties, felt a pang of sorrow, and said, "Chop off their heads."
"Your Highness, if we break these turtle shells, we'll win." Seeing Mei Yi, Luo Fu laughed heartily, "Your Highness, do you have a way to break these infantry formations?"
Of course.
"Hmph, these cavalry seem selected from infantry, utterly lacking cavalry tactics, but fortunately they carry a small cavalry shield, which they use passably. First clear the outskirts, then we'll slowly wear down these little hedgehogs." Mei Yi eyed the trembling, rhythmically moving square formations, smirking.
"Your Highness, what's wrong with the ice plain wolf? Isn't it ineffective?"
"I don't know what's wrong with it. But it certainly can't be used to break infantry formations. You can't rely on it from behind; it hasn't caused you trouble, has it?"
"The fuzzy dog—how could it be? It's fierce! Should we throw heads into the infantry formation?" Luo Fu spoke faster, urgently asking.
"Of course not; heads wouldn't smash anyone to death." Mei Yi glanced sideways.
"Well..."
"George, huh, and also Young Baron Tao Ha, leading a few youths along the lakeside to shout at the herdsmen: dare open the path, accept Lesweil's fleeing troops, and we'll burn their warehouses to ashes." Mei Yi wiped the blood from her cheek, "Throw the heads onto the island, let them see the outcome."
"Yes, Your Highness."
Although some mishaps occurred, Lesweil's cavalry was still, as expected, cut off at head and tail. The long cavalry column was divided into three parts.
In the upper part, the fleeing cavalry will follow the stream and lakeside toward the swim lane; if they find this route blocked, they will cross the stream and head north, and this portion of the fleeing troops will be pursued by forces arranged by Luo Fu; the middle part, the fleeing cavalry will all retreat to the apple forest, and this portion has already been gathered by Bolong along the way, collecting scattered riders, with Luo Fu also pursuing; if Bolong and the scattered riders still remember their tactics, they should await this portion of the fleeing troops at the designated spot; the lower part, the fleeing troops will either retreat the way they came, withdraw along the lakeside road, or retreat toward another swim lane.
Kong Qi's forces are sufficient to pursue only one direction.
Realizing this, Mei Yi mounted her horse and pursued in Kong Qi's direction.
Along the way she rounded up three cavalrymen, then followed the road they took into the grassy village to chase the escaping cavalry.
After slaying three fleeing cavalrymen by the stream, she turned back, then headed toward the swim lane connecting the stream and the pond. By the time she arrived, Kong Qi had only one cavalryman left beside him, desperately fending off three attacking knights.
Mei Yi notched her bow and easily took down one of them; after drawing slightly closer, she slew another with her hand.
The remaining one turned his horse and fled at once. Mei Yi again drew her bow and arrow, and one shot took down the cavalryman wearing leather armor adorned with grass-fork patterns.
After being rescued, Kong Qi's face flushed red.
"Chop off their heads, then round up the warhorses." Mei Yi ordered.
"What do we need the heads for?" Kong Qi said glumly.
"Issue a genuine threat to the viscounts and the grassy villages along the way."
When Mei Yi returned again, the infantry formation had already shifted to the entrance of the island, and the infantry shouted loudly at the herdsmen inside the island.
But this time, the herdsmen did not lower the drawbridge for them.
