Chapter 1069
Whoosh~ a gust of wind blew past, carrying the dark elves' puzzled words in their strange tongue.
"Are they humans?"
The language of wind.
Swoosh!
A gust of wind blew past, and the leaves rustled softly.
Another dark elf stood on the tree trunk, looking toward the dark elf kin fetching water by the pool. Though his gaze was a touch colder, there was no hostility in it.
"That's right, I watched their entire arrival."
"Should we kill them?"
"No need. They're only staying one night—they need water just like we do!"
The dark elf by the pool lowered the bow he had already drawn, an arrow nocked and ready to fire.
"Right, the clan is running low on food—catch some fish to bring back." The words barely fell before the dark elf on the tree trunk vanished from sight as if he had never been there.
"Understood."
The dark elf by the pool immediately pressed his palms together and began a soundless chant, manipulating the water element to catch most of the fish in the pool. Then, using his will, he guided the fish one by one to fly on their own into the bamboo basket at his waist.
The small bamboo basket impossibly held several dozen fish.
After finishing all this, the dark elf turned and swiftly departed. Bafflingly, he made no sound the entire time—his legs clearly stepping on the grass, yet he moved as if floating.
No trace, no change. If one absolutely had to point out a difference, it was only that the pool held far fewer fish—but those fish had originally been raised here by the dark elves. The night passed without another word.
The next morning, Lin Cheng noticed something off the moment he got out of bed.
"Huh… that's strange."
"What is it…?"
Miss Qianhui rubbed her eyes, stepping out of the tent in a daze.
"I noticed it when I went to wash up by the pool."
Lin Cheng's face wore a look as if he'd seen a ghost, and he pointed at the pool.
"Mm?"
Miss Qianhui stepped closer and looked at the pool—it didn't seem to have changed at all.
"What's wrong? Is there a problem with this pool?"
"The fish are gone."
"Huh?"
Miss Qianhui's face went speechless, and right after, a little angry—she really wanted to slap Lin Cheng right now.
"Are you sick in the head?"
Lin Cheng's face was blank—what did he do now? Scolded for being sick first thing in the morning.
"The fish in the water are fewer—what does that have to do with you?"
"I thought something was actually wrong."
"And that's what you tell me? That the fish are fewer?" Lin Cheng still tried to argue.
"Last night I clearly saw there were plenty of fish in the pool, but this morning somehow…"
"Maybe some wild beast caught fish to eat during the night?"
"There wasn't even a sound—that's not normal. I have this feeling of being watched."
"Enough, forget it. We should eat breakfast and get back on the road."
Miss Qianhui didn't want to hear Lin Cheng's excuses and explanations. No matter how eerie this place was, it had nothing to do with them.
All they had to do was set out as soon as possible and head for Yongjicheng.
In the end, Lin Cheng's vigilance came to nothing—he had found some clues. But yielding to Miss Qianhui's demand, he could only take out the mechanical wolf and hit the road once more.
