Chapter 1309

~5 min read 951 words

On the other side, far in the center of the Western Region kingdoms, lay the Holy Kingdom.

High above the main gate of the royal capital, a spatial mirror displaying the Fortress of Colin hung with perfect clarity. On the city wall, several dozen magic-crystal cannons had gathered vast amounts of magical power. The technicians around the red-hot cannon barrels were gripped by fear, terrified that in the next second these magic-crystal cannons would explode.

Yet they had no choice but to force themselves to remain here, enduring the searing heat radiating from the cannon barrels.

"Fire!!!"

At the commander's order, every technician controlling a magic-crystal cannon prayed as they pulled the trigger. In an instant, the magic-crystal cannons let out a thunderous boom, and the violent shockwave sent the surrounding technicians flying several meters away. One after another, pure magical cannon shells rose into the air, then plunged into the spatial mirror.

However, there were also one or two cases where magic-crystal cannons failed to fire their shells and exploded on the spot, instantly vaporizing the two or three technicians beside them.

Above the Fortress of Colin, magical cannon shells rained down around the fortress like a downpour. The instant they struck the ground, the shells revealed their ferocity—the violent explosions vaporized everything within three meters, and the remaining shockwave sent debris flying.

Fortunately, the Fortress of Colin had originally been built from extremely sturdy giant stones, and was further reinforced with subsequent inscriptions and special materials poured over it. Even the terrifying power of the magical cannon shells only left large craters on its surface and cracks covering the surrounding giant stones.

But this was merely the power of a single magical cannon shell. Dozens more were still raining down from the sky, exploding on the ground before and after the Fortress of Colin, and landing right in the clusters of Eternal Night soldiers—in an instant, leaving not even bones behind.

Boom! Boom! Boom! The magical cannon shells continued to wreak havoc and destruction.

"Ahhh… my leg! Help me!"

"Ah, is this Dazhuang's head?"

"No… no!"

"Oh heavens!"

At this moment, every soldier of the Eternal Night Legion seemed to be enduring the most terrifying purgatory on earth. They watched helplessly as their comrades on the opposite side were vaporized by a single white-light cannon shell, leaving not even bones. Even the luckier soldiers might have their entire upper body or lower body vaporized, and by the time their minds registered what had happened, the blast's shockwave had already sent them flying, not even allowing their blood to spill.

Only mangled bodies remained, collapsing weakly to one side, their eyes vacant as they waited for death to slowly descend.

Screams, fear, terror, helplessness—these negative emotions spread among the remaining soldiers, each face marked by dread, none of them having ever experienced anything so horrifying.

Boom! Boom! Boom!

The explosions nearly drowned out the individual screams. Under the onslaught of such powerful magical cannon shells, the watchtowers on the city wall had long since collapsed with a roar, and even the walls of the Fortress of Colin were nearly shattered to pieces—especially the section near the city gate, which had been struck most frequently by the cannon shells, blasted open into a massive breach. The scorched, smoke-wreathed high-temperature walls and the shattered stones on the ground all bore witness to the devastating power of the magical cannon shells.

When the final cannon shell fell, the spatial mirror in the sky vanished, and the Holy Kingdom army sounded the horn of attack.

Behind the broken walls and crumbling fortress, Eternal Night soldiers emerged one after another in terror. They could not believe what had just happened—comrades who had been right before their eyes had vanished without a trace. Yet the enemy before them had undeniably breached their fortress and torn open their psychological defenses.......

All of this had become an indisputable fact.

Faced with such terrifying artillery fire, they lowered their heads to look at the weapons in their hands—did they still possess the courage to raise them and fight?

"Charge!"

A soldier who had just lost a loved one, his heart overflowing with pain and hatred, raised his cleaver and charged out. But after only a few steps, he realized none of his comrades behind him had followed?

Why?

"What are you all standing around for? The enemy is already coming—do you want to die willingly?!"

A furious, hate-filled roar jolted a few of them awake.

Right—if they had survived, were they supposed to just stand here and wait for the enemy to come kill them?

But after witnessing what had just happened, only terror remained in their hearts. If the enemy unleashed such an attack again, they could hardly be sure they would survive it.

"My brother died, right in front of me. He pushed me out of the blast radius, and I watched helplessly as he was blown apart by the cannon shell—only a pair of hands was left behind…" the soldier said through gritted teeth, tears barely held back in his eyes, his fists clenched in anguished unwillingness, fingernails digging deep into his flesh—but it was nothing compared to the pain in his heart.

"I will avenge him! I will avenge my fallen comrades—they were all my brothers!"

"If you all just stand here waiting to die, you're no longer my brothers. I don't have brothers this cowardly!"

Only a few people woke from the terrifying scene, as if they had lived through an entire lifetime. One second they had been bragging and horsing around together, and now they were separated by life and death. If even they themselves gave up, then who would avenge their comrades?
