Chapter 166: Mao Family Rules

~8 min read 1,470 words

"Rongjun has grown up so tall; I haven't seen him for a few years."

"Come, Rongjun, take the red envelope. Oh my, just a little token of my heart."

Amidst the pushing and shoving, Mao Fu was praised until his face was beaming. He thought to himself that this boy really gave him face, but he still had to be humble, calling Mao Rongjun to greet the elders while he himself dealt with the neighbors here.

Mao Ning tugged at Su Mian's sleeve. "Sister, let's go inside."

Su Mian nodded. Just as her foot stepped into the doorway, the system's prompt sound rang out.

【Ding-dong – Today's special task has been released. Please complete it seriously.】

A flash of doubt crossed her eyes, and she intended to ask 4399, but Mao Ning handed her a leather notebook.

"Sister, these are the Mao family rules. Page 17 is for the Mao family's new bride. You need to memorize it. After brother finishes entertaining the guests tonight, sister, go to his study and recite it once."

She led Su Mian to the bedroom on the second floor. The room was huge, with white polished bricks.

A 1.8-meter-wide bed placed here didn't feel crowded at all. The vanity mirror was made of fine white wood, showing it had been decorated with care.

And the small garden on the second floor that Su Mian had seen when she was on the first floor belonged to this room.

She was quite satisfied with the room. She didn't know when Mao Ning had left, leaving only the Mao family rules in her hand.

She sat on the bed and turned to page 17.

Rules for the Mao Family's New Bride

Article 1

Within the Mao family, there is an order of seniority.

The unmarried bride ranks after the family members and before the guests.

Article 2

Upon entering the Mao family, the bride may not change her residence without authorization.

At night, she may not make noise, climb high, or go near water.

Article 3

The bride's words and actions must be slow.

She may not walk fast, speak loudly, or turn her head to look at people.

Article 4

The Mao family's descendants are of utmost importance.

The bride's diet, daily routine, and bathing must be arranged according to the family's arrangements.

Article 5

Everything the bride uses belongs to the Mao family; old items may not be brought in.

Reading this, she paused for a moment, then opened the wardrobe, finding that many new clothes had indeed been placed there. She probably couldn't wear the one she had on anymore; otherwise, it would violate the family rules, and she didn't know what would happen.

So she picked out a beige coat and put it on, with a white floral dress inside. She really had the feeling of a young lady from that era.

After fussing about, she continued to memorize.

Article 6

The bride may not address the men of the husband's family by their given names.

During the day, she may call them "Sir"; at night, there is another form of address.

A question mark slowly appeared on Su Mian's head. What the hell is "another form of address at night"? Did she have to guess it herself?

Article 7

If you hear strange noises at midnight, do not answer.

If you see anything abnormal, do not investigate deeply.

Article 8

The bride may not lock the door.

If she needs to rest quietly, she may only close the door.

Article 9

If the bride violates the rules, the fiancé will discipline her on her behalf.

The fiancé's actions are permitted by the family rules.

Article 10

The Mao family's back courtyard and the old house at the end of the rice fields may not be approached except on festival days.

Article 11

Any foreign object must be returned to its original place and returned to its owner.

She only needed to read it once to memorize it all. She wandered around the residence aimlessly but found nothing abnormal.

The first floor was the residence of the Mao family elders, the third floor was for Mao Fu, Mao Mu, and Mao Rongjun. She returned to the bedroom.

She had gotten up too early to travel in the morning. She didn't want to move after sitting on the bed. So she planned to take a nap, took off her coat, and was left with only the floral dress.

The quilt used handmade cotton wadding, and the quilt cover was velvet, which was very comfortable. Su Mian burrowed into it, rubbed her head against it warmly, and quieted down.

The other side wouldn't be so peaceful.

Qiao Yinuo and Tiffany didn't know how long they had walked before reaching the opposite side of the rice fields. The closer they got to this house, the colder and more eerie it felt.

Qiao Yinuo grabbed Tiffany's arm tightly, looking around nervously. Tiffany kicked the door open. The exposed wooden beams and blackened rafters inside crisscrossed above their heads.

Most of the house was immersed in heavy shadows, appearing damp and oppressive.

At the end of the house was a wooden staircase leading to the second floor. Under the stairs was the door to the inner bedroom.

The two moved to the foot of the stairs and looked up, seeing nothing. Tiffany tentatively stepped on it; the stairs were fairly sturdy, just looking unstable.

"I'll go up and take a look; you wait here."

Tiffany said to Qiao Yinuo, then supported herself on both sides of the stairs and lowered her body to go upstairs.

Qiao Yinuo waited anxiously, looking back neurotically from time to time, her lips pale.

Damn it, what she feared most was Chinese-style horror. The wax figure in the previous instance had scared her enough, let alone a house of this level.

Suddenly, her ears twitched, and she heard some movement at the door, as if it were at the door frame, very low, on the ground, but she didn't dare to look back and could only shout loudly for Tiffany.

Tiffany came down from the attic after hearing the sound.

"What's wrong?"

"Behind me... there's a sound."

Tiffany looked. "There's nothing here; even the arc of the open door is the same as just now."

Hearing this, Qiao Yinuo breathed a sigh of relief.

"Upstairs is also a bedroom, but there are things like wedding dresses in the wardrobe, and a pair of embroidered shoes under the bed. You'll probably be scared, so I'll sleep in the attic, and you sleep on the first floor."

Qiao Yinuo got goosebumps hearing about those things and was so grateful she was about to shed tears. She would never scold Tiffany again; she was too brave.

The two prepared to go out of the wooden house to catch their breath; it was too oppressive inside. When walking out of the door, Tiffany suddenly grabbed Qiao Yinuo.

Qiao Yinuo: "What's wrong?"

Tiffany's face turned pale, pointing to the corner of the door.

"How come the embroidered shoes I just saw on the second floor are here?"

Qiao Yinuo's body stiffened. "You, what did you say?"

The two looked back at the same time, only to see a string of footprints on the ground that were the opposite of theirs. They were very shallow, but the pattern on the soles seemed to be those embroidered shoes.

"Ahhhhhhhh!!!"

Qiao Yinuo was so scared she danced a breakdance, dragged Tiffany, and rushed into the rice fields, scaring the cow that was eating weeds into running away while wagging its tail. The screams resounded through the sky.

The twin sisters were still completing the task just assigned, requiring them to find the impostor hidden among the Mao family relatives. Screams came from not far away.

Sun Er: "Ah"

Sun Jiu: "Oh"

It was already dark when Su Mian woke up. The sound of crickets was in her ears, and she had even missed the evening banquet.

She rubbed her head, feeling a bit lazy. She couldn't help it; the bed was too soft, and the velvet quilt was much more comfortable than an ordinary quilt, so she slept until eight o'clock.

A plate of mixed stew was placed on the nightstand, probably taking a little bit of every dish from the banquet, like a rice bowl.

A note was pressed under the plate.

"Sister-in-law, you were sleeping too soundly, so I didn't call you. Remember to eat, and don't forget today's task."

Putting the note aside, Su Mian picked up the plate to eat, couldn't help but sigh, this life of being fed and clothed by others was really comfortable, but it was a pity it was built on the basis of getting married and having children. ===== CHAPTER 167 =====
