Chapter 38: Overweight
The hospital provided doctors with single rooms, a single bed plus a small bathroom.
Su Mian subconsciously thought the bathroom faucet hadn't been turned off, but only realized the hospital had lost power again after walking over.
She looked at the motionless faucet and showerhead, only then realizing the dripping sound was coming from outside the door.
She didn't really want to deal with it, rubbed her aching temples, and turned to dive back into bed, but Su Mian couldn't sleep at all after that.
At first, it was the sound of dripping water, then came the coughing of an old person, very slow, accompanied by the sound of a cane hitting the ground.
Finally, there was a tearing sound, as if skin and flesh were being slowly torn apart.
Su Mian was tortured and tossed and turned, and finally, being too tired, she fell into a deep sleep in the second half of the night.
The hospital changed its weather in the early morning; fog shrouded the entire wasteland, and players on high floors could only see a white expanse upon opening the windows.
Morning was like night; the sky was a gloomy ink color, and thick clouds pressed down low, as if they were about to swallow the entire hospital.
Between the gaps in the clouds, however, a dark red light faintly shone through, like the reflection of a fire burning on the clouds in the distance.
Someone was hiding behind the curtain, uneasily spying on this ominous celestial phenomenon.
In the next second, they were bitten into a bloody mess by an unknown species that pounced from behind, not even having time to call for help.
That unknown species was wearing a hospital gown, its face full of dark red blood vessels, almost about to pierce its transparent skin.
Transparent skin wrapped around bones and flesh; it was impossible to tell what it was.
It looked like "meat swallows," with skin as thin as cotton paper, making one feel it would break with one tear.
Yet its combat power was terrifyingly strong, instantly tearing apart humans with tight skin.
【Zhang Shuo Zhi: What's the situation with those zombie-like patients outside?】
【Su Tang: Ahhhhh, so disgusting, there are so many human fragments on the ground...】
【Chen Mo: Can we still go out today?】
【Zhou Ruochuan: Let's not...】
Without a doubt, no one wanted to go out.
But the phone was acting like it was crazy, sending them messages non-stop.
【Please go to the office to clock in.】
【Please go to the office to clock in.】
【Please go to the office to clock in!】
The final period turned into a red exclamation mark, the phone screen went black, and it completely died, causing everyone's hearts to gradually sink to the bottom.
But could they really get out?
Su Mian took a look outside; the entire corridor was almost at the level of needing to be pixelated. In this way, everything from last night was explained.
The dripping sound was actually blood splashing and sliding down the wall, and the tearing sound was that group of monsters eating human flesh.
But there were no monsters on this floor except for human fragments. Su Mian carefully pushed open the door and took a vigilant look outside.
Hearing the movement, the others also came out one after another, and everyone looked at each other.
Zhang Shuo Zhi: "What now?"
Wang Zeyu glanced at his watch. "Our usual time to clock in for work is eight-thirty; it's eight o'clock now."
His voice paused. "I think if we're late, something terrible will happen."
The atmosphere became very oppressive; no one wanted to know what the "terrible thing" was.
The only thing they could do now was to rush to the offices on their respective floors to clock in.
The group arrived at the elevator lobby, but of the six elevators, only one was working now; the buttons of the others had no reaction, like dead objects.
Zhou Ruochuan began to tremble all over, squatting down while hugging his legs.
"I don't want to... I don't want to..."
He was on the verge of collapse, but no one had the energy to comfort him. Chen Mo even gave a "tsk" impatiently, without any intention of looking back.
"Don't be afraid, Ruochuan, cheer up."
Su Tang squatted beside him, supporting his shoulders, and Su Tang's sweet voice echoed throughout the elevator lobby.
Zhou Ruochuan raised his head; his round, bright eyes were like a pool of water, his gaze carrying encouragement and comfort.
"I... I."
"I'm here, don't be afraid."
Zhou Ruochuan stared at those eyes, finally blushing, and didn't continue to speak. Su Tang took the opportunity to help him up.
Su Mian watched this scene silently, lost in thought, but ultimately didn't say a word. She stared at the elevator floor numbers rising slowly, her thoughts drifting far away.
That sentence really didn't sound like something said to a stranger.
The two of them... when did they get so familiar?
The elevator door opened, and the six of them squeezed in.
But the door didn't close for a long time, then issued two "beep" alarm sounds, and a red exclamation mark lit up on the screen.
"Overweight?!"
Wang Zeyu exclaimed.
Su Tang: "That can't be, there are only six of us..."
Zhang Shuo Zhi looked up at the top of the elevator, his tone subtle: "Maybe... there are more than six people."
One sentence woke everyone up, and a chill instantly crawled up their spines.
Zhou Ruochuan: "Then... then what do we do? Do we... go or not?"
He spoke with a trembling voice, and his legs were so weak between words that he wanted to squat down again.
"Of course we have to go! Who knows what will happen if we're late? Wait for death?!"
Zhang Shuo Zhi shouted, his voice so loud that the "foreign objects" on top of the elevator began to stir.
Chen Mo was a bit impatient and reached out to press the elevator for the sixth floor.
"What are you afraid of? Soldiers come, generals block; water comes, earth covers. Take a knife and stab them; can their mouths be sharper than a knife?"
Su Tang: "But it's overweight... even if we have the courage to deal with it, we can't go down now."
Su Mian tried to step out of the elevator; sure enough, the elevator stopped beeping in the next second, and everyone fell silent again.
"As long as... one person goes down..." Wang Zeyu realized, but a new problem followed: who goes down?
Only fifteen minutes left.
This elevator stopped at many floors; going in two batches definitely wouldn't be enough time. Wang Zeyu kept checking his watch, sweat seeping from his forehead.
Su Tang suddenly raised her voice: "Whoever is closer goes in the next batch!"
All eyes were cast on Su Mian.
Without a doubt, the Psychiatry Department was closest to the dormitory floor.
But at this moment, due to human relationships, no one dared to speak up to drive Su Mian away.
But Su Tang's meaning, both inside and outside her words, had already indicated her attitude.
Not a single person said "no."
Although it was cruel, they knew that if they replaced Su Mian, there would be a risk of being late.
No one wanted to bear the price based on their lives.
Chen Mo walked out from the very inside. "I'll go with you."
Su Mian shook her head.
"You're on the sixth floor; you won't make it in the next batch."
Chen Mo pursed her lips and didn't speak; the people behind her urged her.
"Hurry up, Sister Chen, there's only thirteen minutes left."
Su Mian gazed at those stubborn eyes, then pushed Chen Mo gently. "Go quickly, leave me more time."
Once these words were out, Chen Mo didn't delay any longer, turned around, and entered the elevator.
Wang Zeyu's expression was worried, but he was powerless and silently closed the elevator door.
【Mian Mian, what are you going to do? Su Tang and Zhang Shuo Zhi are also quite close on the 21st floor; why don't they replace you?】 ===== CHAPTER 39 =====
