Chapter 49: Miss Anna

~7 min read 1,382 words

Su Mian looked toward the sound, silently noting the number of players.

Thirty players, yet only fifteen were here; where were the others?

She walked over. Adele noticed her arrival and looked her up and down, and the few people beside her also looked over.

Adele: "Are you a player too?"

Su Mian nodded and discovered a girl wearing the same nun's habit as her; it was the one who had just been talking to Adele.

【Sera】

【Junior Player, Identity: Town Nun, a nun dispatched by the City-State Center, responsible for plague relief in Millford.】

"Did you come because of the plague too?"

Sera asked. Su Mian couldn't think of a better reason for the moment, so she nodded along with her words.

Adrian and Bruce walked over at some point as well; Bruce looked somewhat angry.

Adrian: "You must all be newcomers or junior players."

Sera was a bit surprised, "How did you know?"

Adrian sneered, his expression turning mocking as he stared at the mist in the distance and spoke.

"This game plays that double-dealing game; the mid-to-high-level players are all staying at the City-State Center. And us? We're in the slums. Tell me, isn't that hilarious?"

Once these words were out, many people showed angry expressions. Sera raised her hand weakly.

"This... this has nothing to do with level, right? What if there are more clues in Millford than in the City-State?"

"Then their food and lodging are still much better than ours!!"

Adele was acting a bit like her true self, with an air of daintiness revealing itself from head to toe.

She kept placing a damp handkerchief on her neck, looking as if she couldn't stand the dry climate here.

Once these words were out, many people followed suit, feeling indignant.

"Yeah, yeah."

"Exactly, why do they get to live so well?"

"If you ask me, high-level players should be the ones staying in a place like this—"

The players' discussion continued incessantly until the sound of glass shattering was heard, and everyone's gaze converged there.

And at the center of their gaze was an innocent-looking Su Mian.

She looked at the glass wine cup she had knocked over and blinked at Adrian.

"Sorry."

Adrian, as the horse ranch owner, just assumed it was an accident. He was drawn in by those eyes and slowly returned a smile.

"It's fine. Your name is?"

"Yifening."

Taking the opportunity to exchange names, Adrian observed Su Mian calmly.

He had noticed this girl a long time ago; the haughty expression when she looked in the mirror had attracted him, and those eyes made him unable to look away, wanting to get a glimpse of the true face beneath the veil.

Unfortunately, the girl had already shifted her gaze, and he could only look elsewhere like a gentleman.

Damn it.

Su Mian just felt her hands were a bit itchy, so she inexplicably knocked over that wine cup. By the time she came to her senses, it was all too late.

A passing servant sweeping with a broom slipped, let out a cry of surprise, and nearly drove their palm into the shards on the ground, their face filled with terror.

Tsk.

Su Mian turned her head, bored, appearing somewhat disappointed, yet she couldn't help but think about the wonderful scene after succeeding. The pink lips beneath the white veil curled slightly.

She seemed to understand the meaning of the task "Do not expose your demon identity."

Doing all kinds of evil is the nature of a demon.

The group chatted for a while and decided to use this place as a centralized discussion point.

Su Mian, who had intended to follow Sera away, was called back by Adrian. He held an oil lamp, leaning against a horse with a relaxed posture.

"The road to the nunnery is very dark; take an oil lamp."

Su Mian stared into those eyes; there was no malice in them. After hesitating for two seconds, she took the oil lamp.

Sera, standing beside her, thanked him on her behalf, and the two walked away arm in arm.

Sera was a girl with a bit of social anxiety; she didn't dare stare at Su Mian while talking, yet she couldn't help but complain to Su Mian about the script.

After chatting about this and that, the two arrived at a crowded alley.

The entrance and exit of the alley were carved with the nunnery's emblem, which had become blurred by wind and sand as time passed.

Old, weak, and injured people sat on both sides of the road. As soon as Su Mian stepped into this place, she felt many gazes.

She clearly perceived that these gazes were ill-intentioned, yet they secretly withdrew after seeing the oil lamp in the girl's hand.

The alley was indeed very dark; the only source of light was in Su Mian's hand. They walked to the end of the alley.

She rang the bell, even though there was no door here, only a white cloth covering it.

"Sera, where have you been?"

The woman behind the door pulled back the white cloth; she was wearing the same nun's habit as them, but a golden cross hung on her chest.

She kicked the old man resting beside her and didn't look at the two girls directly.

"Two more people died this morning; go deal with them quickly."

"Yes... Miss Anna."

Sera pulled Su Mian tightly and squeezed into the door behind the white cloth; she looked very afraid of this Miss Anna.

There wasn't a shred of light inside the house; the places illuminated by the oil lamp were hard to step on. There was foul-smelling medicine, dried vegetable soup, and mountains of grain.

In the distance were a few rare clean hospital beds; the people lying on them didn't make a sound—they were probably dead.

"The script says Miss Anna is a City-State noble who believes in that... cult, and likes to abuse maids. Anyone who doesn't listen to her will be..."

Sera made a throat-slitting gesture. Her eyes darted upward intentionally or unintentionally, and Su Mian followed her gaze.

The nunnery had two floors; the first floor was a place to provide relief to patients, and the second floor was the nuns' residence. She vaguely saw something swaying.

"That girl provoked Miss Anna a few days ago, so she was hung by the bed."

Sera's voice was so low that Su Mian could barely hear it. "My... my bed is right next to hers."

"Hey, what are you shouting about? Are you two crazy?"

The nun upstairs grabbed the wooden railing and made a shushing gesture. Sera immediately covered her own mouth.

"Go bury the dead people quickly, did you hear me!"

She walked down in a few steps, her eyes sweeping over the oil lamp in Su Mian's hand. She froze for a moment and immediately wanted to snatch it.

Su Mian stepped back, and she raised an eyebrow.

The nun covered her mouth and coughed awkwardly. "The oil lamp is too bright; don't, don't scare the departed souls."

Saying this, she walked out of the nunnery quickly.

"Yifening... what should we do now? We really have to bury the corpses; this is too terrifying."

Sera stood at the door, neither willing to get close to the patients on the first floor nor daring to go upstairs to rest.

Suddenly, a female corpse flew down in front of them. She screamed loudly and looked up.

Su Mian stared at her with a half-smile.

"You're really a coward."

"Yifening! What, what are you doing?!"

Sera was shocked and pale.

How could she dare to throw down the corpse that Miss Anna had hung up! What if they were seen? Would they die here?

Su Mian looked at Sera, who had a terrified expression on the first floor. The corners of her mouth lifted pleasurably again. She leaned on the railing, tilted her head, and stared at Sera as she stepped forward to drag the female corpse.

【You really look like a demon now, Mian Mian】

4399 spoke at an inopportune time. Su Mian replied nonchalantly.

"I quite like this character setting. Most importantly, not needing any reason to do bad things is indeed quite satisfying." ===== CHAPTER 50 =====
