Chapter 740: The Matter of Resurrection
If one were to compare death to an Abyss, then he had previously been in a process of infinite falling, and was already at an infinite distance from the World of the living that lay above the Abyss.
This was an extremely thorough death.
Even though he had stopped the infinite falling process of death at this moment, he was powerless to climb out of the Abyss of death. On the contrary, the more he struggled, the more futile and powerless he appeared.
But now.
In this Abyss of death, there was a wind lifting him, making him rise rapidly, no longer falling, and the speed was extremely fast, surpassing who knows how many Infinites, pulling him back from the endless death.
"How did you do it?"
The old man was instantly stunned.
"Don't worry about how I did it; what matters is that I have indeed helped you find a chance at rebirth. With your strength and realm, you should be able to return using this opportunity, right?"
Li Heng asked.
"That's right, having this chance is enough. I can feel that as long as some time passes, I will be able to return."
The old man nodded, both pleasantly surprised and puzzled.
He truly did not understand.
Why would a young junior who had not yet stepped onto the Path of Transcendence possess such power to resurrect someone of his realm? Could this be the power of a Dao Lord? But that shouldn't be; he did not sense even a trace of the Great Void from this power.
"Remember your promise after you are resurrected."
Li Heng nodded, unsurprised.
The essence of Source Power was extremely high; although the quantity was too small now to allow for a full-strength resurrection, giving a small chance for resurrection was doable, otherwise he would not have made such a bold claim.
He looked around.
The Great Dao Road stretched across the infinite Unknown, extending forward continuously, not knowing where it led. He understood that he could not stay in this place for long; the Unknown here, the level here, was not something his current strength could bear or comprehend.
It was like an elementary school student doing advanced calculus problems.
Even if the answer were written out clearly, one would be unable to understand the answer or the process of solving it. In that case, it would be better to return to the Great Void; staying here was just a waste of time.
However... Li Heng thought for a moment and continued to speak.
"I would like to ask, what happened with that Dao companion of yours?"
Upon hearing this, the old man's expression stiffened, his happy look suddenly turning dark. He sighed and said, "Has the fellow Daoist met that Dao companion of mine?"
He no longer viewed Li Heng as a young person, but as a peer.
Li Heng shook his head.
"No. However, I heard people say that your Dao companion died in the mouth of a monster, and as you know now, those who die at the hands of Disaster monsters are basically impossible to resurrect."
The old man's expression became even more ashen and gloomy, like a sky that had not seen rain for thousands of years. After a long while, he sighed and spoke.
"I knew it, I knew it. After I died, I once sensed that she had an accident, and afterwards there was no news or contact. Clearly, she is truly dead."
Speaking of this matter, the old man's tone was unusually calm.
"Do you not feel sad?"
Li Heng asked.
"Naturally I am sad. When I realized she had an accident, I thought about whether I should destroy my own form and die completely to accompany her."
"But the goal that she and I had agreed upon has not yet been achieved. If I went to see her like this, she would definitely scold me to death, so I must keep struggling and continue to linger on."
"Until I met you, fellow Daoist."
The old man said with a bitter smile.
"Then are you still sad now?"
Li Heng asked another redundant question.
Yet this redundant question caused the old man to fall into a long silence.
"I was very sad when she died, but as a long time passed, no amount of sadness could persist. It was only when you, fellow Daoist, said that those who die to Disaster monsters cannot be resurrected that I truly wanted to die immediately."
Finally, he said this.
"But you don't look sad now. Are you pinning your hopes on me? Just as I could resurrect you, you could resurrect that Dao companion of yours?"
Li Heng continued to ask, with great interest.
"Perhaps. Besides, for a dead person to grieve for another dead person, that is somewhat strange."
The old man was noncommittal and did not answer directly.
"I can give you another promise here: if your future actions can satisfy me, and you can let me know more information about the Path of Transcendence, or even reach the end of Transcendence—if it exists—then I can take action to resurrect your Dao companion."
Li Heng said.
He was not doing charity; everything had conditions.
"Many thanks for the great kindness, fellow Daoist." The old man bowed.
"Alright, the matter here is concluded, and it is time for me to go back. I still have to deal with that remnant spirit of the Zhongjie Daozhu; I cannot delay time here."
"Fellow Daoist, you must be careful. Even if those Dao Lords only have remnant spirits left, you cannot underestimate them. Perhaps even a remnant spirit can sublimate to the extreme in a short time and exert the combat power of a full-strength Dao Lord."
The old man's expression was grave as he warned.
"I naturally know this; thank you for the reminder."
Li Heng nodded, Source Power condensing in his eyes, engraving everything around him—all the Unknown, all the Great Dao, all the Laws—into his heart.
Since he had come here by chance, he did not intend to return empty-handed. Since he could not understand everything here for the time being, he would just commit it all to memory and wait until he could understand and perceive it.
It was like an elementary school student doing university textbooks; although they could not understand them for now, as long as the student slowly advanced in their schooling and became a university student, they would be able to understand.
Afterwards, Li Heng bid farewell to the old man and followed the faint connection back to the Great Void.
At the end of the Time-Space Mother River, the End Battlefield.
Li Heng slowly opened his eyes, shooting out Great Dao Divine Light. With one thought the Great Dao was born, with one thought the Great Dao was extinguished; various Worlds floated and struggled within it. It was clear that this sixth sublimation had not only allowed him to transcend the Hongdao Level, but also allowed him to truly reach the ranks of the strong.
He was confident that unless it was a Dao Lord or a derivative product of a Dao Lord, no one could be his match; he truly stood at the peak level of the Great Void.
But at the same time, he felt the Great Void's rejection of him even more. If it weren't for the fact that he had a deal with the Great Void previously and the Great Void needed him, the Great Void would likely have already brought down a world-ending Calamity to suppress and expel him.
He looked up and spoke with a smile.
"Don't be so impatient. I haven't caused any harm to the Great Void, and there is a transaction between us. Are you sure you don't need these things?"
A Degraded Product of Source Power appeared on Li Heng's palm.
The power fluctuations of these Degraded Products overflowed and merged into the surrounding Great Void, and subsequently, the churning Tribulation Cloud gestating above that Great Void slowly dissipated.
However, even so.
He could still feel that the Great Void had become much stricter with him.
The upper limit of power output had been tightened once again...
