Chapter 338: Journey of Exploration

~6 min read 1,139 words

Ao Li and Lín Jìn, after repelling the bat‑shaped monsters, threw themselves wholeheartedly into exploring this mysterious land—the Spirit Illusion Continent, which seemed like a massive treasure vault, every corner hiding astonishing secrets waiting to be uncovered.

The two followed a path paved with multicolored stones deeper inland. On both sides of the road grew strange plants of various shapes. Some had leaves like gleaming metallic blades that swayed gently in the breeze, emitting crisp sounds; others bore huge flowers whose petals were like translucent crystal, filled with glowing fluorescent sap and exuding a charmingly odd fragrance.

"These plants look beautiful but exude a dangerous aura," Ao Li said cautiously, observing the surrounding flora and reminding Lín Jìn.

Lín Jìn nodded, his eyes keenly noting every detail. Suddenly, he spotted a seemingly ordinary vine whose tiny backward thorns flickered with faint blue light, clearly poisonous. "Watch out for these vines; they may be toxic," Lín Jìn reached out to stop Ao Li, signaling her to be careful.

They pressed on and soon encountered a herd of never‑seen creatures. The beasts resembled elk but were covered in scales that shimmered with Rainbow Light; their antlers branched like trees, sprouting tiny luminous flowers. When Ao Li and Lín Jìn approached, the creatures showed no panic, only curiosity, and emitted soft low‑hum sounds.

"They seem gentle and not afraid of us," Ao Li smiled, slowly extending a hand to gently stroke a creature's scale, which felt smooth, warm, and oddly delightful.

After bidding farewell to the strange beasts, Ao Li and Lín Jìn arrived before an ancient ruin. The ruin was massive, built from huge stone blocks, each engraved with mysterious runes and exquisite patterns. The designs depicted scenes from various myths: dragons soaring the heavens, deities wielding elemental power, and bizarre creatures fighting alongside humans.

"These patterns seem to tell a grand story," Lín Jìn examined the stone carvings closely, trying to piece together the full narrative.

Ao Li focused on the runes, noting their similarity to those on the scroll she had seen in the temple, yet with subtle differences. "Perhaps these runes can help us better interpret the scroll's content," she said.

As they delved deeper into the ruin, the ground suddenly began to quake violently. From the depths of the ruin, a massive stone beast slowly crawled out. The beast resembled a lion but its entire body was composed of hard rock; its eyes flashed red, and its gaping maw revealed sharp stone fangs, accompanied by a deafening roar.

"It looks like we triggered some kind of guardian mechanism," Ao Li swiftly drew her long sword, preparing for battle.

The stone beast lumbered forward, each step shaking the ground, charging at Ao Li and Lín Jìn. Lín Jìn flickered, darting to the beast's side to search for a weak point. Ao Li met it head‑on, channeling Inheritance Power into her sword; a powerful Sword Qi shot toward the stone beast. The Sword Qi struck, scattering stone fragments, but seemed to cause little damage.

The stone beast turned, swinging its massive claws at Ao Li. She moved with agile grace, evading the lethal strike and slashing at the beast's leg. Yet the beast's rocky hide was too hard; the long sword left only a shallow mark.

"Its defense is too strong; ordinary attacks won't work," Ao Li said.

Lín Jìn observed the beast's behavior and noticed that before each attack its eyes glowed even brighter. "Ao Li, aim for its eyes! That might be its weak point!" Lín Jìn shouted.

Hearing this, Ao Li immediately sought an opening. When the stone beast launched another attack, she timed it, dashing like lightning toward it; at the instant she closed in, she leapt high, concentrating Inheritance Power at the tip of her blade and drove it hard into the beast's eye. The beast let out a painful roar, its red eye dimming considerably, and its movements slowed.

Lín Jìn seized the chance from the other side, releasing a massive burst of energy that struck the beast's other eye. Both eyes were blinded, and the creature thrashed blindly in place. Ao Li and Lín Jìn pressed the advantage, launching successive attacks until the stone beast crashed down with a thunderous boom, shattering into a pile of rubble.

After the battle, Ao Li and Lín Jìn rested briefly before continuing to explore the ruin. Deep within, they discovered a sealed secret chamber. Its door was tightly shut, covered with intricate runes and puzzles. The pair studied the symbols, trying to find a way to open the chamber.

"These runes seem to test our understanding of the Spirit Illusion Continent's history and culture," Lín Jìn said.

Ao Li nodded, recalling everything they had learned about the continent during their expedition, as well as the patterns and texts seen in the ruin. After some thought, she realized the rune arrangement resembled a diagram of stellar trajectories she had previously seen. She attempted to activate the door's runes in the order of the stars' movement.

As Ao Li worked, the runes on the door began to glow, intertwining beams of light until a complex pattern formed. Then the secret chamber's door slowly opened, and a stale, mysterious aura washed over them.

Inside the chamber stood a massive crystal statue of a robed sage cradling a softly glowing crystal sphere. Inscribed on its base were some words. Ao Li and Lín Jìn approached the statue and read the inscription carefully.

The text recorded the origin of the Spirit Illusion Continent and the true secret of the Spirit Source. It explained that the Spirit Source was not merely a simple mysterious force; it is a nexus linking dimensions and worlds, governing universal balance. This continent once served as a key stronghold guarding the Spirit Source. Yet for unknown reasons the Source's power gradually fell out of balance, spawning a series of crises, and the appearance of those monsters may be the consequence of that imbalance.

"It seems our exploration is drawing ever closer to the truth," Ao Li said, excitement and worry flickering in her eyes. The excitement stemmed from being one step nearer to unraveling the mysterious summons, the worry from the fact that the imbalance of the Spirit Source could pose a danger far greater than they imagined.

At that moment, a low rumble echoed from within the chamber, and the ground trembled again. From a corner of the chamber, a horde of ghostly beings exuding dark aura surged out. Their forms flickered, eyes glowing with eerie light, and they lunged toward Ao Li and Lín Jìn.

Can Ao Li and Lín Jìn once again overcome these new challenges? What greater conspiracy lies behind the Spirit Source's imbalance? Where will their journey of exploration on this mysterious continent lead? Everything is shrouded in unknowns and suspense…
