Chapter 21: Breaking Out of Campus

~7 min read 1,359 words

Watching the "dead" closing in on their group, a dark glint flashed in Lingyun's eyes, and he said, "Saeko Busujima, you lead the way, and Ye Xi and I will cover the rear. Everyone else, pick up the pace! We must break out before the dead surround us."

"I'm leading the way?" Saeko Busujima turned to look at Lingyun, a trace of scarlet surging once more from the depths of her pupils.

"Cough, cough, the most important thing right now is to escape this campus first. Once we are surrounded by them, everything will be lost," Lingyun said earnestly.

Lingyun's words seemed to possess an unknown magic; the scarlet in Saeko Busujima's eyes receded. She nodded at Lingyun, gripped her wooden sword tightly, and charged to the very front, where every "dead" in her path had its head blown apart by her.

Lingyun and Ye Xi ran at the very back, their wooden swords gripped tight. Suddenly, an accident occurred; a male student didn't know what he had stepped on, his body tilted, and with a thud, he fell straight to the ground. When he scrambled up, he clutched his right foot tightly; it was clear he had sprained his ankle.

Just as he fell into despair, a female student in the crowd suddenly turned back, ran to his side, and tried to help him up so they could run together. But how could the speed of running while supporting an injured person be fast? The two soon fell behind by a distance, and the "dead" behind them quickly closed in.

"You run, I'm afraid I can't run in this state. I don't want to drag you down with me." A trace of fear flashed in the boy's eyes, but there was more grief and resolution.

"Impossible, didn't we already agree before? We live together, we die together. I will absolutely not abandon you like the others!" The girl's expression and tone were both very firm.

"Roar," the "dead" behind were already close to them. One "dead" that was relatively close had its hand almost touching the girl's clothes; once she was grabbed by it, the outcome would be self-evident.

Just as they were about to give up, a cold, sharp light shone in front of them, and the head of the "dead" about to grab the girl flew into the sky. At the critical moment, Lingyun arrived in time and shattered the outer shell of his wooden sword; hidden within the wooden sword was a long sword shimmering with a cold glint. The "dead" chasing behind the two were easily decapitated by Lingyun.

"I'll carry him, let's go." Lingyun grabbed the male student who had sprained his ankle with one hand, easily placed him on his back, and ran rapidly toward the school bus. Don't let the fact that he was carrying a boy fool you; his speed was not a bit slower than the others.

The female student was stunned for a moment, then immediately caught up.

Luo Yexi also shattered the outer shell of the wooden sword in her hand, and a long sword shimmering with a cold glint was unsheathed, easily slaughtering the batch of "dead" closest to them. Only then did she turn around and rapidly catch up with Lingyun's group.

When the four of them arrived at the school bus, almost everyone had already boarded, and only Saeko Busujima was still waiting for them in front of the bus. When she saw the long swords in the hands of Lingyun and Luo Yexi, an inexplicable light flashed in her eyes.

"Quick, we must leave immediately. Almost all the 'dead' in the campus have gathered around; if we don't leave now, we're dead for sure!" Lingyun said.

Lingyun boarded the bus with the male student on his back and whispered to him, "If you kid can survive, you must treat your girlfriend well. In this apocalypse where everyone is struggling to survive, there really aren't many people who can live and die with you."

Speaking of this, Lingyun seemed to think of something and sighed softly. The boy just nodded hard, saying nothing.

Seeing that the group had all boarded, Marikawa Shizuka immediately started the bus. Just as Komuro Takashi was about to close the bus door, from not far away, six or seven people rushed out from somewhere, running toward the school bus with all their might, shouting something loudly. Among them was a male teacher wearing glasses and a white and purple striped suit.

"Wait, School Infirmary Marikawa, we must save them!" Komuro Takashi said.

"Who is that person?" Luo Yexi asked Saeko Busujima, who was beside her. "He gives me a very disgusting feeling."

"Ziteng Haoyi from Year 3 Class A, he is one of my teachers," Saeko Busujima replied.

"Ziteng..." Hearing this name, Miyamoto Rei's body stiffened instantly, and the hatred in her eyes erupted as if she wished she could devour this person. "Takashi, you absolutely cannot save this person."

"Why? We can't just stand by and watch people die!" Komuro Takashi frowned and said to Miyamoto Rei, "It's the apocalypse now; we must unite to survive better. Rei, you don't look like yourself like this."

Seeing Komuro Takashi's attitude, Miyamoto Rei understood that she could not dissuade him and could only return to her seat with a face full of resentment and unwillingness. Igou Hisashi glanced at Komuro Takashi, sighed, lowered his head, and whispered comfort into Miyamoto Rei's ear.

At this moment, on the road leading to the school bus, Ziteng Haoyi, looking like a refined teacher, was standing there, directing the students to run toward the school bus and occasionally cheering for the students running at the back.

Suddenly, a student wearing glasses tripped and fell to the ground because he wasn't watching his feet while running past Ziteng Haoyi. The "dead" behind were already catching up, and the male student clutched his ankle and grabbed Ziteng Haoyi's pant leg with his right hand.

"Teacher, I sprained my foot, can you help me?" The male student looked at the approaching "dead," his voice already carrying a sob.

Ziteng Haoyi looked at the boy and smiled slightly: "Is that so? This world is already an apocalypse; only the strong can survive. It's a pity, you are not the strong, so just wait here for death!"

After Ziteng Haoyi finished speaking, he stepped directly on the student's face, crushing his glasses. Afterward, ignoring the student's wailing, he kicked him directly toward the "dead."

When Ziteng Haoyi's group boarded the bus, those who didn't know much about his character first glanced at Lingyun and Luo Yexi, who were resting, then looked at Miyamoto Rei, who was looking at Ziteng Haoyi with resentment, and finally looked at Komuro Takashi, wondering what they were thinking.

Komuro Takashi looked at the people present with some embarrassment, then looked at Miyamoto Rei, who was leaning in Igou Hisashi's arms, opened his mouth to say something, but finally closed it.

"School Infirmary Marikawa, drive quickly. Once the school gate is blocked by the 'dead,' we won't be able to get out," Lingyun said.

"Oh, oh." Hearing this, Marikawa Shizuka hurriedly said, "I'm driving!" After saying that, she slammed the accelerator to the floor. The bus shot out like an arrow from a bow.

"Quick, go to the school gate!" Takagi Saya directed from the side.

"I know!" Marikawa Shizuka turned the steering wheel sharply, only to find that quite a few students who had turned into "dead" had already gathered in front of the school bus, seemingly attracted by the sound of the car engine.

"They aren't human, they are... no longer human!" Marikawa Shizuka's voice went from a low whisper at the beginning to a hysterical scream at the end, and she slammed the accelerator to the floor again with her foot that had already been lifted.

The school bus let out a low roar, smashing into any "dead" blocking its path, and charged out of the school gate in one go.

Watching the school gate gradually receding behind them, many people on the bus breathed a sigh of relief; they were safe.
