Chapter 110: Playing Ball Is Less Fun Than Watching It

~8 min read 1,428 words

Due to a schedule change, the PE class originally on Wednesday morning's fourth period was moved to Thursday.

The PE teacher hadn't arrived yet, and the class monitor Liu Yang was also playing ball, completely uninterested in organizing the class; students from Class Aosai Three wandered around the playground.

Yao Bei Bei and Zhang Nenzhi stood hand in hand at a distance, watching the boys huddled together on the basketball court.

The yellow-skinned woman couldn't help but blush, pointing and saying.

"Our class's boys pretend to play basketball just to cling to each other—do they think no one notices? They're all total fags!"

Zhang Nenzhi didn't know how to respond; her gaze had been fixed on one figure. The moment the ball left his hand, her heart felt as if squeezed tight.

When it dropped into the hoop, she felt an inexplicable surge of joy.

"Huh? Beibei, what did you say?"

"I said forget our class's boys—you're acting weird." Yao Bei Bei suddenly pressed her face against Zhang Nenzhi's cheek, tilting her eyes to interrogate.

"Why are you always staring at Jiang Nian? What's so special about that jerk?"

"Huh? I—" Zhang Nenzhi panicked instantly, her heart racing like a green field with wind rushing through her chest, "I—I wasn't looking! I was watching them play!"

As her conscience pricked her, the bright figure on the playground seemed to blur.

"Stop pretending. I can tell the two of you are off." Yao Bei Bei kept pressing her newly acquired girlfriend, "No, more accurately—only you are off."

"What's so great about him? He's vulgar and loves telling bride-price hell jokes."

"He's definitely good-looking, and his body's not bad either—just don't know if he has abs. Why don't you go lift his shirt and take a peek?"

"No!" Zhang Nenzhi instinctively pulled away, her face slightly flushed, "Beibei, don't say things like that."

"Fine, I won't say anything." Yao Bei Bei turned her head and saw the PE teacher calling out from the other end of the playground; Liu Yang sprinted over like a stray dog.

The whistle shrilled—time to form up.

Before a row of cement ping-pong tables, rows of green trees swayed in the sunlight. Students from several classes were already running laps, bustling like a living painting.

She turned to Zhang Nenzhi, her expression serious.

"But… Zhizhi, please don't fall in love during Gao San, okay? I consider both you and Jiang Nian friends, so I hope you'll wait until next summer."

"Beibei, it's not like you think." Zhang Nenzhi's heart pounded like a cowhide drum; after denying it, she whispered, "I promise you."

The PE class routine was utterly ordinary: formation, running, calisthenics, then dismissal.

Jiang Nian usually went straight to the classroom to do homework, but recently he'd added a biology enrichment class; his burden had grown heavier, and he'd written so many problems he felt like vomiting.

Now that he finally had PE, he didn't feel like returning to the classroom—avoiding the wild couple Mo Naizi would be awkward.

Let's be honest, couples really have guts.

During PE, while few were around, they knew the classroom had surveillance, yet sat in a corner against the wall, pretending to do homework, hiding under their uniforms to reach out and touch.

Jiang Nian had seen it before, but he was busy with his problems and pretended not to notice.

He couldn't help wondering—does writing problems after Mo Naizi give you some kind of stat boost?

Ew, vulgar! Vulgar!

He shook his head and joined the basketball game.

But after half a round, he stepped out—too big a skill gap. If he kept playing, others wouldn't get more than a few minutes each.

He had no real attachment to basketball; he just couldn't stand that group of fags.

Play ball, play ball—why cling to each other?

Especially Li Hua, that low-class basketball player—every move he made was a foul. If you blinked, that dog would drop to the low defense.

"Why aren't you playing?" Li Hua stood on the basketball court, curiously asking.

In the sunlight, Li Hua's face looked utterly sincere.

"Come on, one more round."

"No thanks. If I keep dodging you, you'll start groping my junk." Jiang Nian couldn't take it and quickly stepped back.

"Damn it, what kind of filth are you on a basketball court?"

Li Hua laughed and pointed at him.

"You're just weak. Your body's fine, but you can't handle contact—ah, the weak always make excuses for themselves."

In response to Li Hua, Jiang Nian gave him the middle finger.

Seeing Jiang Nian turn to leave, the big fat guy Ma Guojun walked over, curiously asking.

"Why'd he leave? I was hoping to hear a few bride-price jokes."

"He couldn't beat me at basketball, what else?" Li Hua shook his hands and turned back to the court, shaking his head, "True masters are always lonely."

Ten seconds later, the court erupted in a pig-slaughtering scream.

"Li Hua! You're not defending—you're grope-fucking!"

"Country bumpkin! That's how you defend on a street court!"

"You fucking asshole, so cocky? Come on! Let's Aruba you!"

Jiang Nian had already walked far away; someone was kicking a ball on the sports field, but he didn't feel like joining. Instead, he turned and scanned the playground, spotting a few people playing badminton.

He'd originally been heading toward the boys' side, but halfway there, Chen Yunyun called out to him.

"Jiang Nian, come over here!"

Her voice drew several heads turning—Chen Yunyun was also beautiful, and now, for badminton, she'd taken off her jacket, revealing a figure far taller than the average girl's.

Around them, a circle of boys—from Class Three and neighboring classes—looked at Jiang Nian with no small envy; after all, he was the kind who could easily hang out with pretty girls.

The tone, the intimacy—it was unmistakable, yet not the kind of early romance or flirtation.

Jiang Nian hadn't really bonded with girls either; besides being close to Zhang Nenzhi and Yao Bei Bei from his small group, he only knew Chen Yunyun slightly.

As for the other girls clustered around Chen Yunyun, he didn't know them at all. He knew their names, but had barely spoken to them.

Jiang Nian was about to wave her off, but Chen Yunyun ran over.

Her movement had a faint, barely noticeable sway—but in the blink of an eye, she was right in front of him, shoving the badminton racket into his hands.

"Here! You play against Yuhe! She's too strong!"

"Huh? But I'm only an average player." Jiang Nian declined, though it was already half a yes. "I can't beat her, don't push me into this."

After all, once you've watched the ball, you can't not play.

Jiang Nian felt something brush against his arm and couldn't help thinking, did he draw some kind of card when he left the house today? How was he getting all these freebies handed to him?

Honestly, being brushed against by a well-endowed female classmate he was on good terms with still felt pretty nice.

Though, this couldn't be blamed on Jiang Nian.

Chen Yunyun. Sigh, why so enthusiastic. If we're playing ball, then play ball—what's with all the grabbing and pushing, I really don't like this kind of being forced into it.

At the ping-pong table nearby, Sun Zhicheng was a little envious; Jiang Nian's relationship with them was really good. He'd originally wanted to join in, but was too embarrassed to do it alone.

He wanted to find Lin Dong, but in the blink of an eye couldn't locate him—had no idea where he'd run off to.

On the badminton court, Wang Yuhe's expression didn't change much.

She thought it was perfect to use Jiang Nian as a whetstone to test her own strength. Recently she felt she'd improved a bit more—one punch and he'd be done for, they're all classmates after all.

Although she didn't know how strong Jiang Nian was, the moment she thought of his three-thousand-meter running result, she felt a slight anticipation.

With an opponent of such stamina, she approved!

Jiang Nian, half-pushed half-pulled, got onto the court, looking at the silent Wang Yuhe across from him. He couldn't help mulling to himself—her aura seemed kind of strong.

Then he'd play seriously. Love can't rely on sentiment alone; he had to use a smash to make her feel respect.

Bring it on.

Smashes have to be full-power smashes!

Wang Yuhe pressed her lips together, her brow furrowing slightly, as the shuttlecock instantly flew high.

No more breaks—later, around dawn, there's still another chapter.
