Chapter 626: Movie

~13 min read 2,416 words

After the first evening self-study session.

The entire Class Three nearly leapt out of their seats, shouting as they prepared to rush to the convenience store.

"We're watching a movie!"

Ceng You said, "Li Hua, get me two packs of Ge Ge."

"Ge Ge? Are you kidding me, Chi Shi?"

Ma Guojun turned and asked, "Jiang Nian, what do you want? I'll get it for you. Quick, I'm leaving now."

"Multiflavor peanuts," he said.

"Hey hey, get me one more pack of spicy fish fillets too!" Ceng You shouted, "I'll pay you back later, Yi Fu."

Ma Guojun froze, stunned. "Are you serious? Don't drink all my water later."

Jiang Nian said, "He might be feeding it to the dog."

Hearing this, Ma Guojun was slightly puzzled. "Li Hua can handle that much spice?"

"Chi Shi! Chi Shi!"

Jiang Nian sat in his seat, calm and composed. He never worried about snacks—he'd just pick some up here and there.

Store-bought snacks couldn't compare to those "Han"-ed.

Ten minutes passed quickly.

The self-study bell rang. Those who bought snacks returned one by one; the fat boy handed Jiang Nian his pre-ordered peanuts.

"Here, your peanuts."

"Mm."

Ma Guojun patted his pocket, then tossed two packs of spicy fish fillets to Ceng You—he wouldn't touch the stuff himself.

He'd been tricked into eating it once before and nearly vomited from the heat.

"You're really eating it?"

Ceng You, hearing this, tore open a pack and took a bite.

"Not spicy at all."

"Awesome." (2)

Once they turned away, Ceng You faced forward, opened his mouth, and silently hissed—his tongue instantly swelled with fire.

Even so, he forced himself to say:

"Not as spicy as before."

Li Hua strolled into the classroom, puzzled.

"Really?"

"Really. Don't believe me? Try a bite," Ceng You said. "Probably sold poorly, so they lowered the spice level."

Li Hua's spice-loving DNA stirred. He took it, bit into it.

"Ahh!!"

The next second, his face twisted like a pig rolling on the ground—his cheeks turned crimson, blazing red.

"Water! Water! Water!!"

"Finished," Ma Guojun said.

"Oh no, I just needed to use the restroom," Jiang Nian stood up. "Hua, hand me your bottle."

"Chi Shi!"

He turned to Ceng You—and saw the bastard pulling out a bottle of mineral water, gulping it down while watching him.

"Fucking hell, you're all beasts!!" Li Hua ran off to refill his bottle—the scene was too horrifying to watch.

If Ma Guojun and the others were buying snacks, Yang Qiming and Huang Cailang were outright restocking.

"Move!"

"Excuse me, let me through."

On the stairs, a Gao San student groaned, slowly turning around—when something heavy pressed into his waist.

"Ahh! Fuck!"

He winced, clutching his waist, and looked back.

"What the hell is that?"

There stood a boy with a simple, earnest face, carrying two large bags of snacks; beside him, a sturdy boy held another bag.

"???"

Before he could question it, the two shoved through the crowd and bounded up the stairs.

"Bro, can you carry it?"

"You're underestimating me," Yang Qiming lifted the lightest bag. As he reached the top, he heard a chorus of gasps.

He felt satisfied inside—this money was well spent.

Class began. Half the class had returned. Ding Qiulan sat down just as her two desk mates entered, laden with bags.

She stared, dumbfounded, and after a long pause, asked:

"What are you..."

"Snacks," Yang Qiming said. "We're watching a movie this period—I was afraid there wouldn't be enough."

"All bought by Brother Yang," Huang Cailang grinned.

Ding Qiulan was stunned. "Not enough? With all this? I thought you were bringing it to sell in class."

"No way!" Yang Qiming waved his hand. "Help yourselves—I'm covering all the snacks for our group."

"Really?" Ding Qiulan was bewildered.

Sun Zhicheng, across the aisle, watched Yang Qiming show off and felt even more miserable.

He wanted to do the same, but everyone in his group had money.

Even if he bought a big bag of snacks, no one might eat them. Not only would it have no effect, it would also be embarrassing.

Suddenly, he saw Chen Yunyun walking over with a small bag of snacks.

"Cough. Cough."

Sun Zhicheng instinctively wanted to speak, but saw Chen Yunyun turn at the first row and head toward Jiang Nian.

"Not..."

On the other side, Ceng You glanced at Jiang Nian. Seeing only a pack of mixed-flavor peanuts on his desk, he asked curiously.

"That's all you're eating?"

Jiang Nian propped his head up, unsure how to answer. He looked at Ceng You, then at Hongchun Li Hua.

He rubbed his chin and said, "I'm waiting for someone kind to give me something."

Ceng You didn't react at first, then burst out laughing.

"I should've given you the fish steak."

Li Hua had been teased too many times these past two days; his face changed. Sensing another round of teasing was coming, he immediately stepped back two paces.

The next second, Chen Yunyun walked over.

"I brought you some food."

She set down a few dried fruit snacks. For some reason, she seemed oddly fixated on fruit.

Ceng You was baffled—was "kind person" supposed to mean this?

A while later, Wang Yuhe entered the classroom. She didn't come over, but tossed two packs of duck feet toward Jiang Nian from afar.

Then she raised her fist, the warning heavy.

Hundred-ton Wang's impact on this spot... Wang Yuhe really did have authority; one punch had left Jiang Nian with a sore back.

"Huh?" Ceng You swallowed saliva. "You knew someone was bringing you food, didn't you?"

"Yeah... maybe..." Jiang Nian swept the snacks into his desk.

Then Yu Zhiyi passed by, glancing at Jiang Nian. Seeing his desk empty, she asked in a haughty tone.

"Want some spicy soybean jerky?"

This damn Jiang Nian didn't have much money, couldn't spend lavishly—but only on snacks; all his cash went to underwear.

Others tightened their belts and cut back on food; she tightened her clothes and was forced to cut back on food.

"Eat." Jiang Nian said.

Plop-plop-plop-plop—four bags of different-flavored soybean jerky landed on his desk.

Yu Zhiyi thought for a moment, then reluctantly gave him a pack of pork jerky, shot him a glare, and turned away.

Li Hua was stunned—he'd already moved far away.

This damn Jiang Nian still wouldn't let him off, making him relive the suffocating feeling of being teased right in the face.

A while later, Dong Que walked past, looking tense.

"This... for you."

She tossed down two packs of bread and two packs of potato chips—classic academy-style snacks, all respectable.

"Huh?" Jiang Nian looked up at her.

"Xiao Qing... gave these to you. You helped her with the blackboard poster." Dong Que said, dropped the snacks, and hurried off.

Now both Ceng You and Li Hua were confused.

"Wait... you did the blackboard poster?"

"Yeah, helped Cai Xiang with it." Jiang Nian nodded, casually putting away the snacks—otherwise, he couldn't trick Baby Zhizhi later.

With snacks, he couldn't scam her coins.

He glanced over—Baby Zhizhi and the class monitor hadn't returned. They were probably still dawdling below; the movie was about to start.

Tao Ran was on the podium, testing the multimedia equipment.

"Study committee, how much longer?"

"Soon."

Zhou Yuting and another girl entered, accidentally locking eyes with Jiang Nian; her expression was complex.

She'd planned to ignore him, but glanced at his empty desk.

Huh?

Didn't he buy snacks? Whatever—it's none of my business. He's got thick skin; he'll always find something to eat.

She lifted her foot to leave, then remembered that time after the New Year.

That person waving at her outside Tsinghua Hotel.

Not to wish her a happy New Year, not to catch up.

Just for that bowl of braised pig's trotters... one bowl wasn't enough.

Jiang Nian looked away, thinking: Zhou Yuting's still good at pretending. In her hand were several packs of cookies; in her pocket, some spicy little fish snacks.

Goddesses can't eat greasy stuff; secretly, she devours spicy strips.

"Why haven't Yao Beibei and the others come back?" Li Hua complained. "Class has been going five minutes."

"Who knows about them," he said.

Li Hua was about to say more when he caught movement out of the corner of his eye—he thought it was Zhang Ningzhi and the others.

"You finally—"

He turned around—and froze instantly.

Zhou Yuting frowned, deaf to all other sounds. After hesitating, she handed him a bag of pig's trotters.

"Bought the wrong thing. Here."

This time, not only Li Hua was stunned—even Jiang Nian was dumbfounded for a while, unsure what she was up to.

"Huh?"

"Bought the wrong thing." Zhou Yuting repeated, tossing it onto his desk. "If you don't want it, give it to someone else."

Saying that, she turned and walked away.

Jiang Nian propped his head on his hand, squinting. He thought: Why is Tingzi acting so strange? Did she take the wrong pills?

"What's going on?" Li Hua patted him; his swollen red lips looked comical. "Who the hell are you hitting on?"

"Don't talk nonsense. She's an old classmate."

The movie finally started—it was The Legend of 1900.

"Hello hello." Zhang Nenzhi slipped quietly into the classroom, whispering. "Here, one bottle each."

She handed AD calcium milk to everyone in the group, skipped Jiang Nian entirely, and gave the monitor a bottle too.

"Hey, what about me?"

"None left."

Jiang Nian was about to say something when he saw the monitor returning, accompanied by Li Qingrong, who was buying snacks with Nie Qiqi and the others.

When she came back, she carried only two packs of biscuits—tokenly.

Li Qingrong noticed the AD calcium milk on the desk and gave him a puzzled look. After hearing the full story, she thanked him.

Looking at Jiang Nian, she handed him one of the biscuit packs.

"Want some?"

"Yes."

Zhang Nenzhi rolled her eyes. "If you eat it, what will the monitor eat? I've got some. Here, have these little biscuits."

She shoved a few thumb-sized biscuits into Jiang Nian's hand.

"Not enough." Jiang Nian took both, mumbled vaguely, and opened them all.

Li Hua's face twisted in agony, silently screaming inside:

He's faking it!

Halfway through the movie, Zhang Nenzhi grew confused. She glanced at Jiang Nian, who was gnawing on duck feet, and couldn't help asking:

"How many snacks did you buy?"

"I didn't buy any."

"I don't believe you. You've been eating nonstop since the start. You gave me two packs, and the monitor two packs too."

Zhang Nenzhi counted on her fingers, then reached into his desk drawer—accidentally pulling out a huge pile of snacks.

She froze, staring at Jiang Nian.

"???"

"Uh… I can explain." Jiang Nian looked embarrassed.

Suddenly, self-study time was nearly over.

Jiang Nian glanced at Zhang Nenzhi, who was pouting. She huffed, then poked him again.

"Hey."

"Can't hear you." Baby Zhizhi curled up like a turtle, face down on her desk, writing.

Jiang Nian felt guilty. Don't you accept snacks when someone gives them to you?

Such a stingy Zhizhi…

"Forget who gave them—didn't you say you ate them?" he challenged. "I ask you, were they good?"

"You said they were pretty good."

"You!!!" Zhang Nenzhi was furious, swatting him. "Eat them yourself. I'm not giving you any more."

Promised to be best friends forever, yet you accept snacks from others.

You're the absolute worst!

Of course, Jiang Nian didn't care about the label. Since class was over, he decided not to argue with Zhang Nenzhi.

"I'm heading home."

Zhang Nenzhi looked up, glaring at him, still pouting.

"Oh."

Clearly, she was still mad. Unless Jiang Nian messaged her before bed to soothe her, she wouldn't forgive him.

If he did, fine.

She wouldn't stay mad forever—if she always stayed mad, he'd be chatting with the monitor instead of coming to her.

Boys hated trouble and were good at brushing things off. Jiang Nian smiled, stood up, and greeted the monitor. The monitor responded indifferently, merely nodding.

"Mm."

Li Qingrong packed her things, expressionless—clearly, she hadn't given the incident a second thought.

"Did you finish the test I gave you last time?"

Jiang Nian was about to leave when he heard this and turned back.

"Finished long ago."

"What? You want to see it?"

"No. My teacher gave me a set of mock Gaokao papers." Li Qingrong handed them to him. "I don't think I need to do them."

Jiang Nian blinked, glancing down at the Gaokao Mock Secret Paper.

"Huh?"

Yi Zixi released his grip; the school gate was thronged with people.

Jiang Nian walked home, listening to Xu Qianqian and the other girl chat, while replying to Zhang Nengzhi's messages.

The little rich girl was easily placated with a few words; they made plans to go out together next weekend.

Why next weekend? Because... Jiang Nian had just said outright that this weekend he'd be driving the class monitor.

Anyway, it wasn't a date, so Zhang Nengzhi had nothing to say.

"I'm going to the city center."

"Go?"

"Have fun," Zhang Nengzhi feigned ignorance. "Just dinner, then wandering around somewhere."

Jiang Nian: "

Isn't that a date?"

But he still agreed—after all, he had nothing planned for next weekend. Dinner wasn't a loss, and walking around meant he wouldn't leave.

Then, find a bookstore and stay there.

Stubbornly kill time.

He Minjun sent him a QQ message: "The end of the month's coming soon, and you still haven't found a female roommate!"

Behind it came a flood of complaints, mixed with petty daily grumbles from the retake class.

"Our chemistry teacher is just killing time—he teaches half a class, then heads to the office, claiming he's busy but really just drinking tea."

"There's a guy in class who came back to retake; he scored over 630, and he brags to me all day long."

Jiang Nian scrolled down and couldn't help laughing.

He Minjun was treating him like a confessional—people often project a special filter onto those they don't know well.

"What are you laughing at?" Xu Qianqian glanced at him.

"Nothing, a video shared by a classmate." Jiang Nian put away his phone and turned to look at Song Xiyun.

"Is your cold completely gone?"

Song Xiyun averted her gaze, slightly embarrassed.

"Mm."
