Chapter 12: Words and Deeds
Shen Huai walked quickly back to the office.
Just as he pushed open the glass door, before he could even see anyone, a sharp, mocking voice reached his ears first.
"First day on the job, and you're quite busy, aren't you? I can't even see you."
Tong Yue sat at the Team Leader's workstation, glancing sideways toward the door, and tossed out a remark in a flat, indifferent tone.
Shen Huai gritted his teeth, smiled, and met the challenge head-on: "Team Leader Tong, is there something you need, calling me during the lunch break?"
Tong Yue stopped typing on her keyboard, took her time to aim a look at Shen Huai, and pointed with a smile at the empty seat opposite her, "This is your workstation from now on."
Shen Huai's Adam's apple bobbed slightly.
His gaze shifted to the empty seat.
Then he looked around the office.
Damn it, this person is definitely doing this on purpose.
There were clearly several empty workstations next to Fu Hai and the others, yet she insisted on having him sit directly across from her.
It was plain as day that she wanted to make him uncomfortable.
"Team Leader, I feel like sitting over by Fu Hai would be more—"
"What, are you dissatisfied with the seat I've arranged?" Tong Yue swept a cold glance over, "Is sitting across from me beneath you?"
Seeing this, Shen Huai felt his temper rise.
His own irritation flared up inside.
Fine, fine, fine, so you're determined to make things difficult, are you?
Then let's see who can hurt whom.
Shen Huai leaned closer to Tong Yue and whispered in a tone only she could hear: "Team Leader Tong, I, Shen Huai, am not such a petty person."
"Whether you sit across from me or on top of me, I won't feel slighted."
"You...!" Tong Yue's cheeks instantly flushed crimson, a flash of indignation crossing her eyes.
Having exacted a shallow revenge, Shen Huai was in a great mood.
He sat down across from Tong Yue with satisfaction, ignored her man-eating glare, and happily turned on his computer.
Business is business, and personal is personal.
When it came to work, he, Shen Huai, was still very serious.
According to the new employee handbook's process, the first three days of employment were for familiarizing oneself with the company's internal systems and understanding various rules and regulations.
After three days, one would take the new employee online exam, and only after passing would one be exposed to specific execution tasks.
Therefore, Shen Huai's main task for the next three days.
Was to familiarize himself with all of Xingyao's processes and prepare for the new employee exam in three days.
The lunch break ended.
Shen Huai had also more or less familiarized himself with the various internal company systems.
The employee backend system had also been successfully bound.
Just as Shen Huai clicked into the new employee section, preparing to browse the general scope of the exam.
His phone suddenly vibrated.
Shen Huai picked it up to look—
【"Miku Fu" wants to add you as a friend】
It was a friend request.
Although Shen Huai wasn't interested in 2D culture, he wasn't so ignorant as to have never heard of it.
Miku, coincidentally, was another name for Hatsune Miku.
Shen Huai turned his head to look at Fu Hai.
He saw Fu Hai give him a simple, honest smile, pick up his phone to shake it, point at the screen, and use mouth gestures to plead for him to accept.
Shen Huai glanced at Tong Yue across from him out of the corner of his eye.
She was currently buried deep in front of her computer screen, staring intently at public opinion data, not noticing the small interlude here at all.
Tong Yue's computer was different from the others; she used a desktop with a dual-screen display.
Compared to the laptops everyone else had, it was bigger, stronger, and faster.
Of course.
It also invisibly and perfectly hid her figure behind that 32-inch monitor.
Since a colleague had proactively extended an olive branch of friendship, Shen Huai naturally had no reason to refuse.
Shen Huai quietly gave Fu Hai an "OK" hand gesture.
Then he clicked accept.
The next second.
Fu Hai, having had his friend request accepted, immediately sent him a new link:
【Miku Fu invites you to join the group chat "Did the Company Go Bankrupt Today?"】
Looking at this group nickname.
Shen Huai couldn't help but chuckle.
How much resentment must one have accumulated to name a small venting group like this?
But then again.
Looking at it from another angle, he was actually quite approachable. He hadn't expected to break into the inner circle so easily on his first day of work.
Thinking this, Shen Huai entered the group chat without a second thought.
Sure enough.
Tong Yue was not in the group chat.
This was a small group of four people; now, with him added, the group had become five people.
Before Shen Huai could react.
His phone suddenly began to vibrate wildly, and in an instant, it was flooded with 99+ messages.
【Welcome (peace sign. jpg)】
【Welcome to the newcomer (fireworks) (fireworks) (fireworks)】
【Brother, are you a new user? Help me slash the price (handing microphone. jpg)】
【Red packet. jpg】
【Red packet. jpg】
【Red packet. jpg】
【……】
Oh no!
Shen Huai felt a shock in his heart and hurriedly scrambled to turn off the sound on his phone.
It was a pity, but it was already too late.
Shen Huai looked up, terrified, and bumped straight into Tong Yue's scrutinizing gaze.
Tong Yue swept a cold glance around, and finally, her gaze landed back on Shen Huai, saying with a hint of sarcasm: "It seems our new employee is very busy; the messages on your phone haven't stopped ringing."
"I'm sorry, I forgot to turn off the sound. I will be careful next time."
Shen Huai had been caught red-handed by Tong Yue and could only accept his fate.
He had read the employee handbook during his lunch break.
Xingyao indeed had a rule that phones must be set to vibrate during work hours and could not have the sound on.
However, Tong Yue was relentless.
Her eyes darted around, and she changed the subject: "As a Team Leader, training new employees is one of my responsibilities. Not reminding you is also my fault."
"I won't hold what just happened against you. From now on, you, Shen Huai, will start as my, Tong Yue's, Assistant. Wherever I go, you go."
"Personal instruction is the only way to learn quickly, don't you think?"
As Tong Yue spoke, the pen in her hand tapped rhythmically against the desk, as if waiting for Shen Huai's answer.
Wan Dequan and the other three didn't dare to breathe, only shrinking their necks and glancing at Shen Huai with apologetic eyes.
Especially Fu Hai, who looked even more guilty.
After all, those 99+ messages flooding the screen were basically all his "doing."
He hadn't expected to harm Shen Huai.
Being a corporate slave at most just meant having some of your spiritual energy drained.
But being Tong Yue's Assistant? That could get someone killed!
You have to know, she was a disciple taught hand-in-hand by Director Lu Sheng.
Compared to Lu Sheng, one could say the student had surpassed the master.
Her pursuit of perfection had reached a hair-raising, pathological degree.
Otherwise, they wouldn't have had to pull two all-nighters, revising the proposal countless times.
Within Xingyao, all management ranks starting from Team Leader were generally assigned at least one Assistant.
Only Tong Yue did not have one.
The reason was also very simple.
No Assistant had ever been able to last a full month working for Tong Yue.
The final fate of all previous Assistants was to cry and beg to be transferred out of Group 2.
As time went on, the position of Assistant for Group 2 had remained vacant.
In the Public Relations Department, the three major groups were not independent but collaborated with each other.
Therefore, Fu Hai and the others would occasionally participate in projects for the neighboring groups.
Only the Assistant belonged exclusively to the Team Leader alone.
In other words.
If Shen Huai really became Tong Yue's Assistant, it would be no different from a sheep entering a tiger's den.
Fu Hai and the other three looked at Shen Huai with sympathy.
They shook their heads slightly, praying that Shen Huai would definitely refuse.
However.
Shen Huai suddenly smiled, raised his hand to loosen his tie, and his eyes held deep meaning: "Personal instruction, really? Team Leader Tong, you said so yourself."
"Everyone is here; I, Tong Yue, am not someone who goes back on her word."
A hint of a smile pressed into the corners of Tong Yue's eyes: "It's just that I am a person with very strict requirements for my Assistant. If you can't meet my requirements within a month, you can leave on your own."
"Understood." Shen Huai didn't mind, his smile deepening.
