Chapter 237: Soul and Spirit Undergo Demonic Transformation

~10 min read 1,899 words

Wu Wang continued the great enterprise of Wen Wang in overthrowing the Shang, with Shu Dan as his mentor, possessing grand talent and strategy, working from dawn until dusk.

In the Battle of Muye, Western Zhou achieved a great victory, divided the Jiu Zhou, and established the capital at Hao Jing. However, Wu Wang's mandate of heaven was nearing its end; though he held the world in his heart, he passed away midway, and the following year he died, entrusting everything to Zhou Shu Dan, later known as...

The Son of Heaven of Zhou!

With troops at the gates of Shang Yi, Di Xin knew his fate was exhausted, so he held a cup and laughed wildly, adorned himself with precious jade, ascended Lu Tai, and burned himself to death.

The mysterious bird of heaven's mandate descended and gave birth to the Shang. The founding ancestor of the Yin Shang, Di Ku, was the great-grandson of Xuanyuan; he transformed into a bird, and his egg was swallowed by the You Rong clan, later giving birth to E Bo, whose name was Xie.

Xie assisted Yu Di in controlling the heavenly waters, achieved outstanding merit, was enfeoffed at Shang Yi, and thus began the Yin Shang.

Therefore, Di Xin was originally of the lineage of the Human King.

In ancient times, humans and gods stood in opposition, equal to one another. Zhou responded to the mandate of heaven, destroyed the Shang and attacked the tyrant, and later took the title of "Son of Heaven."

Although Di Xin was foolish and cruel, he was in fact talented in both civil and martial affairs; on the Feng Shen Tai, he was crowned "Heavenly Joy," in charge of marriage affairs.

Wu Wang ascended Lu Tai, used a yellow battle-axe to behead Di Xin, hung the head upon a white flag, then entered the palace and beheaded two concubines as well, also hanging their heads.

At that time, one concubine was pregnant; the bloodline followed that of the Human King, the dark soul had already entered, and the spiritual soul had taken shape, yet before it could enter the world, its soul entered the Yellow Springs.

However, as a descendant of the Human King, it possessed a divine nature, which the Underworld could not contain; it could only wander beneath Dong Yue, outside the Wang Chuan, unable to find a peaceful end for a long time.

Resentment naturally grew on the Huangquan Lu, and that dark soul accumulated grievances and fed upon them; as time passed, it actually gained power and grew strange horns and flesh.

With this, it opened up a city outside the Wang Chuan, detained passing dead souls into its ranks, and as time went on, it formed a realm of its own, and no one could do anything about it.

Once it had flesh, it had lifespan; that soul naturally knew this, so it abducted Demon Beasts from the mortal world, and the two combined to seek continuation, and thus the Demon Race was born.

But demons are different from living beings; their ancestor was originally gathered from resentful souls and obtained offspring through heaven-defying methods, so although they have flesh, they only possess two souls and four spirits.

What are souls and spirits? The three and seven of a person.

The first of the three souls is called the Heavenly Soul, or Fetal Light, which governs the Primordial Spirit and returns to the heavenly path; the second is the Earthly Soul, or Refreshing Spirit, which governs the Yang Spirit and returns to the Underworld; the third is the Life Soul, or Dark Essence, which governs the Yin Spirit and returns to the grave.

The seven spirits are Heavenly Thrust, Spiritual Wisdom, Qi, Strength, Central Pivot, Essence, and Hero, which govern joy, anger, sorrow, fear, love, desire, and hatred.

These are the souls and spirits of an ordinary person, but demons only have the Refreshing Spirit and Dark Essence, and their spirits are incomplete; some lack joy and anger, others lack love and desire, but regardless of the type, they all lack the Strength Spirit.

The Strength Spirit, or Swallowing Thief, belongs to the heart chakra, governs the qi-heart, and controls fear. This is why the Demon Race is good at fighting—it is because they have no fear and no dread.

It is precisely because their spirits are lacking that the seven emotions of the Demon Race are always tilted toward one or two, either fickle in joy and anger, or insatiable and treacherous.

……

The Demon Race is ultimately the descendant of the Human King; the high gods of that year had no other way, so they used the great cause of the Conferment of the Gods as a pretext to send Zhou to attack the Shang.

Only a human can be a demon slayer!

Watching the gradually disappearing figure, Fairy Yaoji could not help but sigh: Lingxiang, the road ahead is full of obstacles; if you are not careful, it will be a realm of ten thousand calamities.

"Since your heart is reluctant to let go, why not keep him?" Yunzhongjun also stared into the Water Mirror.

Fairy Yaoji shook her head, and only after a long while did she say: "The human heart is the hardest thing to keep. This is also a fixed fate, and this tribulation is meant to be. Once out of this Water Mirror, the tribulation begins; I only hope these children can pass through it safely."

The E Beast on the side was very puzzled; supposedly, Fairy Yaoji was not a sentimental person, so why was she so concerned about that little girl? When Tumi came before, she was the same way.

That's it, that's it! She remembered!

Tumi is of the Yu Wang lineage, and Yu Wang is the great-grandson of Shennong; although Fairy Yaoji has attained the Dao, she was the biological daughter of that old man Shennong during her lifetime. In this way, they are still family!

The E Beast suddenly realized, no wonder Fairy Yaoji would be so protective of Tumi and that little girl, and even specifically sent it away twice.

Hmph! It really is, if you aren't of the same family, you don't enter the same door!

……

After Guihua left, Bai Wuchang glanced at the disheveled Huiwu beside him, a smile of unknown meaning appearing at the corner of his mouth.

"Then, what should I do with you?"

The tone sounded very helpless, like a loving father who could do nothing about his child. But when Huiwu heard it, he shivered all over.

Having followed Bai Wuchang for these days, Huiwu knew his temperament well. The more calm and indifferent Bai Wuchang looked, the more furious he actually was.

"Envoy! Envoy!" Huiwu scrambled to kneel at Bai Wuchang's feet, "Please give this one another chance!" As he spoke, he began to kowtow with a "thud, thud" sound.

Listening to Huiwu's constant pleading at his feet, Bai Wuchang opened his folding fan and began to fan himself leisurely.

"Oh? You want a chance? But how will you repay me?"

This question stumped Huiwu; according to his understanding, unless it was something beneficial to Bai Wuchang, he would never show mercy.

But what could he give him?

Huiwu panicked for a moment; he truly did not know what else he had that could be used by Bai Wuchang.

At first, the decision to become a demon was because he no longer wanted to suffer that injustice, no longer wanted to be inferior to others. But now it seemed he was still being stepped on, and even his life was not his own.

And what fault did he have?!

No! He must not die here!

"Envoy! Envoy!" Huiwu tugged at Bai Wuchang's robe and begged. "Spare this one's life, and this one will surely become the Envoy's help; this one is willing to go through fire and water for the Envoy, and would die ten thousand deaths without regret! Envoy! Envoy!"

Just as Huiwu was begging bitterly and in a panic, a black figure suddenly appeared behind him. Huiwu was already terrified, and caught off guard, he was nearly scared out of his wits, collapsing on the ground unable to speak for a long time. But Bai Wuchang seemed accustomed to it, only waving his folding fan and speaking indifferently:

"Langtou General, what brings you here at this time?"

The Langtou General merely bowed slightly and replied neither humbly nor arrogantly: "The Demon Lord has received the news and specifically ordered me to come and assist."

Bai Wuchang let out a sneer upon hearing this: "For such a small matter, does it really require the General to take action?"

As he spoke, he glanced at the disheveled Huiwu, pondered for a long time, and then spoke again: "Very well, this seat will give you one more chance; do not let this seat down again!"

Upon hearing this, Huiwu, like a drowning man grabbing a straw, hurriedly stood up and kowtowed, saying incessantly amidst the "thud, thud" sounds: "Thank you, Envoy... Thank you, Envoy... I will certainly..."

But the words stuck in his throat.

Only to see Bai Wuchang raise a hand, and Huiwu was suspended in the air; then Bai Wuchang extended a finger, and Huiwu's chest was pierced through.

Before the shock on Huiwu's face could fade, a drop of blood was flicked into the hole in his chest, and he immediately felt the Chaos within his body like a burning fire.

This feeling was familiar!

However, this time, Huiwu did not turn into a stone statue, but his body kept expanding and changing.

Suddenly, that shell seemed unable to bear it, bursting violently with blood splattering everywhere, and the surrounding grass and trees stained with demon blood all withered and died.

Huiwu revealed his Demon Aspect, with four wings growing from his spine, feet like an eagle's, and two claws like a tiger's; his face was yellow and his eyes were green, and even the broken horn on his forehead looked quite terrifying.

The monster-like Huiwu let out bursts of roars, sounding like pain, yet also like a threat; birds in the forest took flight in alarm, and beasts scurried away to hide.

Facing such a scene, Bai Wuchang was quite indifferent as he fanned himself.

"I presume Langtou General must be very familiar with this!"

Yet Langtou did not answer, merely wearing an expression of detachment, as if the matter before his eyes were as ordinary as a daily meal.

Just at this moment, the black feathers all over Huiwu's body actually began to fall off, igniting into black flames in mid-air and drifting away with the wind, which was extremely eerie. Afterward, scales stained with demon blood emerged from Huiwu's body, creaking like sharp blades.

A long while later, the dust settled.

Huiwu only felt as if he had endured the scorching of purgatory fire, lying on the ground and panting incessantly.

But this pitiful appearance did not move Bai Wuchang; he merely shook his folding fan and said with breezy indifference, "If you disappoint this seat again, this seat will make you suffer the agony of this demonic transformation every single moment for the rest of your life."

Upon hearing this, Huiwu raised his head; although he had transformed into a monster, his face was covered in dark scale patterns, like a Snake...
