Chapter 58: Strange Demon

~9 min read 1,694 words

However, after Li Zhangsheng rushed into that blazing light beam, he felt his vision go dark, and then his whole body seemed to be tossed inside a spinning washing machine, stumbling about for a while.

When he appeared, he was situated on a ruined piece of land.

Heaven and earth collapsed, mountains and rivers shattered, everywhere lay in ruin.

"Is this the Immortal Path?"

Li Zhangsheng raised his eyebrows; this Immortal Path was nothing like he had imagined.

Logically, the Immortal Path shouldn't be filled with drifting immortal energy, vibrant vitality, various opportunity-filled secret realms, and then clearing stages would grant opportunity-style copies, right?

How come this place is everywhere filled with stagnant deathly energy, utterly devoid of life?

Floating shattered stars dotted the sky, bottomless fissures scarred the ground, and a piercingly sharp aura permeated everywhere.

Li Zhangsheng looked around and realized that, in this heaven and earth, it seemed only he existed.

"Not a single person?"

Li Zhangsheng muttered to himself as he turned around here and there.

After turning for a long time, indeed there was not a single person!

"That shouldn't be; so many people from the Myriad Worlds enter the Immortal Path, and although each is sent to a different place, it shouldn't be that only I was sent here, right?"

"Could it be that I was sent to the wrong place?"

Li Zhangsheng curiously surveyed his surroundings; he didn't even know where he was, and in this heaven and earth there was only him, utterly alone.

Li Zhangsheng used several flashes, shuttling across this vast ruined heaven and earth.

He shuttled in one direction for a long time, yet remained within this region of heaven and earth.

"This place is really huge, huh?"

Li Zhangsheng sighed emotionally.

This heaven and earth is at least hundreds of millions of times larger than the Nine Provinces Continent!

"Alright, I seem to have lost my way." Li Zhangsheng took out his wine gourd, took a sip, and calmed his mood.

Even though he had the skill of infinite flash teleportation, without any positional coordinates he still didn't know which way to go.

For a moment, a feeling of loneliness and desolation welled up in his heart.

"Why does it feel like my flash distance isn't enough? I won't be stuck here for life, will I?"

Li Zhangsheng clicked his tongue, and then he turned around for another long while.

Finally… he saw a person!

Not easy at all!

Li Zhangsheng hurriedly flashed over!

This is a vast plain, its surface covered with a kind of blood-red stone slab.

The blood-red stone slabs were etched with densely packed runes, looking quite eerie!

Upon them sat ten people in white robes, forming a large circle, eyes closed, cultivating their spirits, utterly motionless, as if they had entered meditation unto death; the scene was also quite eerie!

At the center of the circle they formed, a sharp sword and an ancient gold bell were planted.

Li Zhangsheng landed on the plain, walked over, and curiously examined these ten people whose state of life or death was unknown.

"They seem to have no aura at all; could they all be dead?"

Li Zhangsheng muttered to himself as he wandered aimlessly across the plain.

Just then, one of the ten people seated cross-legged suddenly opened his eyes.

His eyes flashed with a sharp gleam, incredibly keen, yet also seemed to reflect endless vicissitudes.

This was an old man with white hair and a beard of three long strands; paired with his white robe, he bore the dignified air of an immortal cultivator.

His gaze, tinged with surprise, fell upon Li Zhangsheng strolling across the plain.

At the same moment, Li Zhangsheng noticed the old man opening his eyes and looking toward him.

Their eyes met!

After a long while…

The white-haired old man spoke first, apparently because he hadn't talked in ages; his voice was hoarse and rough: "I never expected to see a living person in my lifetime; where do you come from?"

"From the Myriad Worlds." Li Zhangsheng said.

"The Myriad Worlds?" The white-haired old man mused slightly, seemingly unaware of such a place, "It seems you come from the lower realm."

Li Zhangsheng lightly nodded.

From the old man's words, he seemed to be a person of the Immortal Realm.

"Where is this, and what are you lot doing sitting here?" Li Zhangsheng asked curiously.

Those ten people just sit there motionless, which is rather eerie.

Could it be that this group is all meditating to cultivate?

The white-haired old man turned his head to look around; he remained seated cross-legged, showing no intention to rise, as if his legs were shackled to the plain.

He sighed and said, "Ah, this is the Primeval Battlefield; I don't even know how many years have passed."

"The Primeval Battlefield?" Li Zhangsheng wondered, "Isn't this the Immortal Path?"

Could it really be that I was sent to the wrong place?

The white-haired old man shook his head and said, "It's not the Immortal Path at all; it's the Primeval Battlefield, a place where we once fought against foreign races."

"Oh, alright." Li Zhangsheng clicked his tongue; indeed, I really was sent to the wrong place!

The Immortal Path's transmission function actually made such a huge mistake—what a terrible review!!

"You say this is a battlefield, but why, aside from you ten, have I never seen any actual corpses?"

Li Zhangsheng asked again curiously.

This heaven and earth is utterly dilapidated, indeed resembling the remnants of a battlefield!

However, since it's a battlefield, shouldn't there be corpses scattered everywhere?

How come I haven't seen a single corpse along the way?

That doesn't quite make sense, does it?

The white-haired old man spoke again, explaining: 'This ancient battlefield is merely a battlefield for eleven people.'

"A battlefield for eleven people?" Li Zhangsheng looked around at the vast expanse of heaven and earth.

Is an arena for eleven people really made this huge?

Alright, that's quite impressive!

It seems these eleven people are all experts of the Immortal Realm; to fight, they need such a vast expanse of heaven and earth to unleash their fists and feet.

Li Zhangsheng glanced again at the flat ground and curiously asked: 'You said eleven people, but why are there only ten here…'

The white-haired old man looked at the ground and said: 'There's still one underground.'

"Oh?" Li Zhangsheng looked toward the ground.

Indeed, I sensed a very weak and well-hidden aura deep underground; if not paying attention, one truly wouldn't notice it.

"You ten are ganging up on the one below?" Li Zhangsheng swept his gaze over the ten silhouettes on the flat ground and asked, seemingly also figuring out what was going on.

These ten people wear uniforms of the same color, obviously belonging to the same side.

The white-haired old man nodded: 'That can be said.'

"Looks like you've suffered heavy losses—ten against one, nine knocked out, leaving only you, while the one below seems still alive." Li Zhangsheng said.

The white-haired old man gave a bitter smile: 'Yes, that Foreign Demon is too powerful; we ten formed a formation with our bodies, barely managing to suppress him here.'

"Foreign Demon?" Li Zhangsheng pondered slightly.

It's rare to be able to talk with someone after so many years; the white-haired old man was also quite interested and told Li Zhangsheng: 'Foreign Demons are an evil race; they are powerful, they burn, kill, loot, devour all living beings, and can corrupt immortal energy.'

"Back then they invaded the Immortal Realm, trying to assimilate it into a land suitable for their cultivation, but we of that era drove them back!"

Li Zhangsheng said: 'It seems this Foreign Demon is the villain, and you all seem to have made great contributions to the Immortal Realm.'

The white-haired old man nodded: 'Yes, that Foreign Demon is the common enemy of the Immortal Realm.'

While speaking, the white-haired old man looked at the ancient sword planted in the ground; the sword had only its tip buried, most of it exposed. He said: 'I didn't expect that after so many years, that sword has been pushed up this much by the Foreign Demon underground; it seems the seal has loosened.'

Li Zhangsheng also looked at the sword planted in the ground: 'Is this sword the seal for that Foreign Demon?'

"Yes." The white-haired elder nodded, then said tentatively: 'Youngster, go over and see if you can move that sword, thrust it firmly into the ground to strengthen the seal a bit.'

"I think this is my last awakening; I don't know how long this seal will hold, and when the time comes, will anyone in the Immortal Realm be able to grow strong enough to oppose this Foreign Demon?"

From the old man's words, that Foreign Demon seems quite formidable.

Li Zhangsheng also didn't know whether he could kill that Foreign Demon.

Not knowing the opponent's exact strength, it's better to play it safe!

I won't be the one to stick my neck out!!

Li Zhangsheng walked over to the sword's side and asked: 'If I thrust this sword a little deeper, will it reinforce the seal?'

The white-haired elder nodded: 'See if you can move that sword by exerting all your strength.'

That sword is after all an object of the Immortal Realm; the white-haired elder also feared that Li Zhangsheng, a person from the Lower Realm, might not be able to wield it.

He merely wanted Li Zhangsheng to give it a try, without holding much hope.

Li Zhangsheng gripped the hilt and gave it a light shake—the sword moved!

Seeing this, the white-haired elder's eyes flashed with surprise: 'I didn't expect you could actually move it—quick, thrust the sword deep into the ground to strengthen the seal and re-seal that Foreign Demon for dozens of aeons!'

"Oh!" Li Zhangsheng nodded.

Since this Foreign Demon is a villain, the common enemy of the Immortal Realm, Li Zhangsheng doesn't mind deepening its seal further!

However, just as Li Zhangsheng was about to thrust the sword a little deeper, a voice came again: 'Don't, don't…'
