Chapter 59: Wolf Pack
Less than a quarter of an hour later, Xia Duo, Dien, Sami, and Dewan gathered outside the south gate of Savile Town with their respective squads; over forty people standing there in identical attire was quite an imposing sight.
In Xia Duo's view, this was just the posture of an ordinary high school class on Earth during a physical education lesson, still far from being real soldiers!
Even so, it still drew frequent gazes from the territory residents who were queuing up with their families, waiting to enter the town.
The four squads were divided into two groups; everyone briefly introduced the people on both sides, then headed toward their respective mission areas.
The 12th Area designated by the Mage Tower was about 200 meters wide, extending from the entrance of the forest all the way to the foot of Wolf God Mountain in the south, where the Orcs were located.
Of course, Xia Duo and the others did not need to clear the way all the way to the foot of Wolf God Mountain; they only needed to clear along this narrow area, trying their best to wipe out the Orcs who had collapsed or fled from the front-line battlefield ahead.
Since this was mainly to let the new recruits practice their courage, the Xia Duo squad and the Dien squad did not separate; instead, they entered the forest together, with Xia Duo and Dien in the middle, accompanied by the squad captains on both sides.
The rest of the people were scattered around the perimeter.
Before coming, Xia Duo had already planned to wipe out a few Goblin camps first.
He still remembered when he had just transmigrated, he encountered a Goblin; at the time, he was almost scared to the point of wetting himself. Fortunately, that Goblin was scared off first, otherwise, some rather embarrassing things might have occurred.
"Captain Jibu, you are more familiar with the forest than I am; lead us to find a Goblin camp to practice on first."
"No problem, Aiwa has already gone ahead to scout the path; let's proceed along the route he marked. There are endless Goblins in the forest; clearing some now is better than letting them be coerced by the Orcs to charge into the territory!"
As he spoke, Jibu pointed to a tree covered in scratches to explain to Xia Duo what each scratch corresponded to, as they all had specific meanings. People who mixed in the forest, whether they were Adventurers or soldiers of the territory, all followed a set of conventional scratch terminology.
Of course, besides the conventional scratch terminology, there were even more marks agreed upon within various small circles.
Xia Duo was completely confused; this kind of experience could not be gained just by someone telling you once or twice.
……
"Situation! Alert!"
While passing a marker tree, Jibu suddenly shouted, then took the large shield he was carrying on his back and held it in his hand.
While those who were originally soldiers or Adventurers calmly formed a defensive formation, the others were more or less nervous; Xia Duo even entered a state of Spellcasting Focus in an instant.
Ready to release a Spell at any time!
Seeing the two squads cooperate to form a defensive formation, Xia Duo finally had the mind to speak, "Captain Jibu, what's the situation?"
Jibu didn't even turn his head and just said, "There is a pack of wolves hunting ahead!"
Hearing this, Xia Duo immediately looked at the marker tree, trying to analyze what the latest scratches on it meant, but he quickly realized his curiosity had flared up again, so he hurriedly asked:
"Do you know how many wolves are in the pack? How is their combat power? Can we handle it?"
"An average wolf pack has about 4 to 6 wolves; the pack Aiwa discovered this time has 6. As for combat power, it varies from high to low; generally, we can handle it, it's just—"
While the two were talking, a high-pitched wolf howl came from the front, followed by several distinctly different wolf howls.
Jibu shouted, "Not good, the wolf pack has discovered us. It's best to kill them, otherwise, they will keep following behind us, always ready to launch a sneak attack. Mage Xia Duo, the wolf pack is not suitable for new recruits to practice on; Captain Wuke and I will take people to finish them off, you all defend in place."
He then looked at the most experienced one among the new recruits, "Yidimu, all new recruits protect Mage Xia Duo. Captain Wuke, let's go, let's see who kills one first!"
"Good!" Wuke immediately accepted Jibu's challenge, "New recruits stay behind to protect the Mage, everyone else follow me!"
After saying that, he grabbed a large shield and charged out; behind him, a veteran and three new recruits who were former Adventurers also charged out.
Xia Duo looked at the group of nervous new recruits around him and felt a bit nervous himself, but he still pretended to be calm and even joked with Dien:
"Dien, who do you think will win?"
"I—" Dien had only just recovered, "I think Wuke should win!"
Although he often ordered Wuke around and looked down on him a bit, at the critical moment, Dien still hoped Wuke would win; after all, they were in the same squad.
"That's not necessarily true." Xia Duo smiled; he was, of course, rooting for Jibu. Besides, wasn't there an Aiwa of unknown depth? Maybe 6 wolves wouldn't even be enough for Aiwa to kill alone!
In the gap while waiting, Xia Duo used the 【Arcane Mark】 to contact Sami and Dewan in the 13th Area, reporting some of the situations he had encountered.
Soon, Sami also sent a message; their two squads had just finished clearing a Goblin camp, and Sami had even killed a Goblin with his own hands!
Seeing that both sides were doing well, Xia Duo did not send any more messages, but maintained his focus, "observing" the state of the Magic Net. With his current strength, he could probably only perceive the distance within 2 or 3 meters quite clearly.
Any further, and it was like looking at a river from afar, appearing as if it were still, making it difficult to perceive.
At this time, the howling of the wolf pack ahead had begun to change, becoming short and rapid, as if several exasperated old men were arguing.
Accompanied by a final sharp wail, there was complete silence ahead, followed by a dull crunching sound, and Jiexi, without a single drop of blood on him, returned, stepping on the fallen leaves covering the ground.
"Mage Xia Duo, Mage Dien, the wolf pack ahead has been cleared. The Captain and the others are dealing with the spoils; he asked me to bring you over."
Before Xia Duo could speak, Dien asked impatiently, "Who won?"
"Of course we won!"
Jiexi hammered his chest hard, his face full of an expression that it was a matter of course, "Mage Xia Duo, let's go over quickly."
"Mm."
……
The new recruits were still nervous; most of them hadn't even killed a Goblin, let alone fought a wolf pack. Xia Duo looked at them, his heart feeling quite complicated.
If there were no real combat training, heaven knows how many casualties there would be when engaging with the Orcs; of course, it was more likely that they would scatter at the first charge.
"Magic—"
Xia Duo subconsciously touched the Scroll Case at his waist; if only there were a Bard's Spell or a Cleric's Divine Magic, it could dispel fear, boost morale, or even enhance combat power.
There were too many uses!
Soon, the group arrived at the location where Jibu and the others had fought the wolves; 5 people were guarding the perimeter, and 6 people were surrounding a spot, skinning the wolves and cutting the meat.
Wolf blood was scattered everywhere on the ground; fortunately, it was already late autumn, and the fallen leaves had covered the ground with a layer, so the scene of a river of blood was not seen.
