Chapter 71: The Fate Recorder Old Man

~7 min read 1,293 words

After greeting the Law Guardian on duty within the Temple, Leonard was led by him to a secluded, small archive room behind the Temple.

"Mage Leonard, the Fate Recorder is inside the archive room; you need only show him the Lord's order."

Having said this, the Law Guardian left on his own.

Leonard looked around the environment with curiosity; except for when he came to the Temple to pray with his family as a child, he had never once visited the Temple after growing up, especially not behind the Temple.

Rows of low buildings appeared exceptionally small against the backdrop of the tall Temple in front, perhaps this was the self-perception of the servants of the gods.

The location of the small archive room was quite interesting and must have been deliberately chosen; it remained in the shadows of the surrounding buildings, and if not for someone else's guidance, one might well have overlooked it.

Thinking of the various legends about the Night Watchers in the Territory, Leonard felt a bit uneasy; having grown up in Savile Territory, the thing Leonard feared most as a child was the Night Watchers.

His family often used the Night Watchers to scare him, and it was not until he became the Lord's student that he truly understood how much of the legends were true and how much were false.

Knock, knock, knock—

"Come in!"

A hoarse, unpleasant voice came from inside the archive room, making one's scalp tingle; Leonard hurriedly pushed the door open and entered.

Upon entering the archive room, Leonard felt as if he had stepped into another world; he subconsciously looked back, and the sunlight outside stopped right at the doorway.

Inside, only a few dim oil lamps provided illumination, and the shadows cast by rows of bookshelves added a touch of eerie atmosphere.

Leonard followed the previous voice and looked over; behind a desk piled with documents, an old man with graying hair was buried in scrolls, seemingly recording something.

As he walked a few steps closer, Leonard was truly startled by this old man; his clothing, appearance, and posture were all normal, but the only abnormal thing was that his exposed skin seemed withered, clinging tightly to his bones.

A pair of turbid, lifeless eyes also made one wonder if he could even see the text on the scrolls.

Leonard forced himself not to focus on the old man's inhuman appearance, took a document from his Dimensional Bag, and handed it over, "My lord, this is the Lord's order."

The old man took the document, glanced at it, and casually set it aside, replying in a hoarse, unpleasant voice, "Understood."

Having said this, the old man reached out and pointed at Leonard; a Skull Mark appeared on the back of Leonard's left hand, after which he lowered his head again and continued writing on the scroll before him.

Leonard was startled again by the old man's sudden action, but a sudden heat on the back of his hand drew all his attention; this was a mark that could be seen directly.

Leonard entered a state of focus, and the mark shone brightly; the traces of Holy Power and the wisps of the Magic Net on it echoed each other, and the structure was not complex, being a structure similar to an Arcane Mark.

As long as he wished, he could easily remove it.

Of course, it was impossible for Leonard to do so; he had already guessed the function of this mark, which should be the credential used to command the Night Watchers.

Just as he was about to ask where the Night Watchers were, strange noises came from near the bookshelves on both sides of the archive room, and as the noises continued, they drew closer and closer to the central aisle.

Leonard turned around and saw a Night Watcher, completely covered in a black robe, emerge from the bookshelf aisle, followed by a second, a third, until twelve Night Watchers appeared before him.

They were silent, but Leonard could feel their "gaze" seemed to linger on the back of his left hand; Leonard turned to bow to the Fate Recorder behind the desk, then raised his left hand, pointing the Skull Mark on the back of his hand toward the Night Watchers—

"Follow me!"

There was no answer, but Leonard knew they could understand his command; these Undead simply lacked the emotions of normal humans, but they were not without the Wisdom of normal humans.

Otherwise, the Territory could not possibly use them as Night Watchers.

When Leonard walked out of the archive room, the sunlight fell on him again, giving him a feeling of being reborn, and at the same time, he felt a deep awe for the Lord of the End of All Things.

Afterwards, he led the Night Watchers to track the Necromancer.

Saville Town South District, Lao Nier Inn.

Most of the Adventurers had been conscripted to fight the Orcs, and business at the Lao Nier Inn had plummeted; not only were there no guests, but in order to maintain good connections, the associated expenses could not be reduced at all.

Just as Leonard left the town district with the twelve black-robed figures, Lao Nier also ran back quickly from the outside, ignoring the surprised gazes of the guests downstairs, and headed straight for a certain room on the second floor.

Arriving at the door, Lao Nier lowered his voice, "Master Mage, Master Mage, there is news."

The door was opened at once, and the Necromancer, who looked like a middle-aged Merchant, was sitting on a chair drinking tea, "What news?"

"Keyaan of the Territory has led the main force out of town, and shortly after, the Night Watchers also left." Lao Nier hesitated for a moment and spoke cautiously, "My lord, you are—"

"Don't worry, I won't cause trouble in the town district." The Necromancer didn't care whether Lao Nier believed him or not, and asked again, "Is there any news about the Savile Lord?"

Lao Nier shook his head repeatedly, "My lord, how could I possibly find out news about the Lord?"

"Heh." To this, the Necromancer was noncommittal and asked again, "Do you know how many Spellcasters the main force brought?"

"This—" Lao Nier looked up and happened to meet the Necromancer's mocking expression; he felt a jolt in his heart and hurriedly spilled all the information he had gathered without reservation.

The Necromancer nodded with satisfaction; of course, it was impossible for him to get all his information from Lao Nier, but others were not even as reliable as Lao Nier.

After dismissing Lao Nier, he immediately contacted a "companion," "You all received the news, right? It seems that matter should be true; our opportunity has come!"

"Do you want to go to Wolf God Mountain to take a look? To make that Archmage pay so much attention, it must not be anything ordinary!" The companion's voice was full of temptation.

"Do you know any news? If it's suitable, let's go take a look together," the Necromancer replied.

But the person on the other side did not take the bait; afterwards, the two discussed some subsequent plans in a half-true, half-false manner, probing each other multiple times without obtaining more information, only then did they interrupt the Sending.

And after interrupting the Sending, the Necromancer cursed disdainfully, "Idiot!"

Of course, it was impossible for him to be persuaded by the other party to go compete with an Archmage for something; instead, the fact that Savile Territory's high-end combat power had all left with the Archmage was his opportunity.

Believing that others were thinking the same thing, anyone who was truly persuaded to go to Wolf God Mountain would be an idiot!
