Chapter 252: Beyonder Gathering
The sudden wealth made both Klein and Leonard a bit more reckless; they placed a few more detective advertisements, and soon enough, cases started coming to their door.
It's just that...
"I'm starting to regret being your detective assistant," Leonard said, lying on the sofa with lifeless eyes.
"..." Klein was also silent; this was not quite what he had imagined!
"So, is Mrs. Maikeli not good?" Klein asked tentatively.
"Hiss! Don't say that name to me!" Leonard almost jumped up.
"Next time there's a commission like catching an affair, you go!" Leonard said decisively.
"That won't work, she specifically requested you," Klein said with a blank expression.
"Is that how you understand catching an affair? I was almost cornered in that room by Mr. Maikeli and couldn't get out!" Leonard's face turned slightly pale.
"Just a little bit more, and the one being caught in an affair would have been me."
"No! I didn't even hook up with her... no, I didn't have any such intentions!"
Leonard was becoming incoherent.
"Haha!" Klein finally couldn't hold it in and burst into loud laughter.
"Can't help it, Mrs. Maikeli just happens to like your type, doesn't she?"
This was a rather bizarre commission for investigating an extramarital affair.
Mrs. Maikeli suspected her husband was cheating, so she found the newly opened Sherlock Detective Agency. In the process of talking, Mrs. Maikeli took a fancy to Leonard at first sight and specifically named Leonard to conduct the investigation.
Leonard naturally didn't refuse, but the bizarre part was that Mrs. Maikeli was brooding over her husband's betrayal.
Perhaps after some mental preparation, she decided that no matter how much she suffered, she shouldn't let herself suffer, so she set her sights on Leonard...
After meeting a few times, Leonard hid in the wardrobe in Mrs. Maikeli's room to look for evidence, and then he was cornered by the well-maintained and still charming Mrs. Maikeli, nearly being caught in a reverse affair by Mr. Maikeli when he came home.
This kind of thing was so bizarre that Klein was dumbfounded, exclaiming that he had truly never seen such a scene before.
"Don't worry, to ensure the physical and mental health of my assistant, I won't take such tasks in the future," Klein promised.
"That's more like it! We aren't here to investigate these kinds of things anyway!" Leonard couldn't agree more.
"Then shall we go to that Beyonder gathering tonight? Put some information out?" Leonard's expression became serious.
"Cast a wide net, catch more fish," Klein nodded slightly. The two of them had already found multiple locations for secret gatherings in Backlund and could rely on these to collect the information they needed.
"Is this a famous quote from Roselle?" Leonard shook his head slightly and looked out the window at the sunset glow; it was already evening. "We can set off now."
"Good!" The two of them tidied up and walked out of the agency.
Click!
Klein closed the door of the agency, but his movements were slightly stiff for a moment.
His teammate Leonard had already quietly reached for the firearm at his waist.
"Spiritual intuition triggered, but... it's very strange." Klein was a bit unsure.
The two walked down the street with normal expressions and hailed a carriage.
"It's like I'm about to meet someone, but they swerved away just as they were about to make contact with me," Klein judged.
"Is this surveillance?" Leonard frowned. "Are we too high-profile and being targeted by the Church?"
Theoretically, they were no longer in the Church system, and even the Nighthawks might target them, not to mention the even more radical Punishers.
"Not sure." Klein shook his head, thought for a while, but had no leads. "Let's put this aside for now; let's go to tonight's gathering first."
This kind of spiritual intuition was unreasonable, and Klein couldn't grasp the key to it right now.
Both of them relaxed, and after chatting along the way, they arrived at the gathering location.
This was an inconspicuous house in the Queen District.
Klein and Leonard entered the gathering place, both wearing hoods to hide themselves.
Most of the people here were dressed in the same way.
Klein and Leonard had been to many gatherings, but this was a higher-level Beyonder gathering.
Because its host was at least a Sequence 5 Beyonder!
The two separated by a distance, found seats, and examined the items written on the surface of the blackboard.
Some early arrivals had already written what they needed on the blackboard.
The host sat on the sofa at the very front, looking down at everyone.
He seemed to have some kind of tacit understanding with the official authorities to be able to hold such a large gathering here.
"We can begin," this gentleman, also wearing a hooded robe, announced.
Everyone wrote their prepared requests on slips of paper, let the attendant collect them, and then had them copied onto the blackboard.
Klein wrote: "Main abilities of a 'Demon' Pathway Beyonder, 200 pounds."
And Leonard wrote: "Potion Formula for 'Instigator', 450 pounds."
Both were fishing; as long as there was a clue, the two of them could follow it up.
It was just that in the entire silent gathering, neither Klein nor Leonard received any response; it was highly likely that no one could provide a clue.
Just when Klein was already disappointed, an attendant suddenly handed him a slip of paper.
"You are looking for a 'Demon' Pathway Beyonder? Come to the study to see me."
Klein's pupils shrank; this tone...
Leonard also noticed the situation on Klein's side and glanced over.
Klein didn't show anything, just nodded slightly, stood up, and followed the attendant to the study.
"Sit." A lazy and casual voice sounded. Klein's body stiffened slightly; this was actually the host of the gathering!
Klein forced himself to calm down, sat on the chair in front of this gentleman, and sized up this... beauty?... who had already removed their hood.
Looking at the face alone, Klein couldn't even tell the gender of this host.
But he really is a man... isn't he a bit too beautiful?!
Klein almost thought he had run into a Witch.
"Why are you interested in Beyonders of the 'Demon' Pathway?"
"I once encountered a suspected 'Demon' Beyonder and wanted to confirm it."
This impossibly beautiful gentleman looked at Klein, his gaze carrying a certain powerful pressure.
"I have intelligence on the 'Demon', but 200 pounds is far from enough."
"You can choose to tell me everything about the 'Demon' you saw, and in return, I can tell you the Beyonder abilities of a 'Demon'."
This gentleman firmly controlled the initiative of the transaction.
"... Fine!" Klein pretended to think for a moment before finally nodding.
The "Demon" he knew had long since died, so there was no harm in talking about it.
"The main abilities of a 'Demon' include Demonization, Malice Perception, and Demonic Flame-type spells, such as..."
The intelligence provided by this gentleman was very detailed, leaving Klein deep in thought.
"'Demon' is a Sequence?"
"Sequence 6," this gentleman shared generously.
