Chapter 244: The Wraith Appears

~6 min read 1,091 words

It’s a Wraith!

It appears to be a Level 3 Wraith, but its name is unknown to Ye Qingfeng.

He made a motion as if pulling a gun from behind his back, and a submachine gun materialized in his hand.

This utterly unbelievable sight drew no attention from anyone.

Everyone’s focus was entirely on the Wraith.

Time was short; Ye Qingfeng had no time to enchant the bullets. He aimed and fired the moment he locked onto the Wraith.

The greatest advantage of a submachine gun is its high rate of fire.

In barely two seconds, all the bullets were emptied.

As the barrel spat fire, two figures swiftly closed in on the Wraith.

Ailian and Kelin swung their blades, aiming straight for the Wraith’s head.

The Wraith showed no hesitation, leaping backward to evade Ailian and Kelin’s attacks.

At the same time, Ye Qingfeng’s bullets struck the hovering Wraith, hitting its body with sharp, metallic clangs.

Clearly, it had inflicted little to no damage—perhaps not even breached its defense.

Ye Qingfeng wasn’t surprised by this result; the submachine gun was mass-produced, and the bullets were ordinary.

They might work against Level 1 and 2 Wraiths, but above Level 3, they probably couldn’t even pierce the defense.

The Wraith flipped 360 degrees midair, landing steadily; its sharp toes scraped the ground, sparking and producing a crisp metallic scraping sound.

It wasn’t unpleasant to hear—in fact, it was almost pleasant?

Using the momentum of the landing, it executed a graceful, spinning motion like a professional ballerina, every gesture exuding elegance.

Its body had a silvery-metallic sheen, accented just right with green, creating an uncanny beauty.

Elegant! So elegant! So beautiful...

Using the final pose of its dance, the Wraith extended one hand toward Victoria’s group—both an invitation and a provocation.

Ies rushed back, staring grimly at the Wraith. “Where did this thing come from?!”

“Since our opponent invites us to dance,” Lekain bowed respectfully, “we shall not refuse.”

No sooner had he spoken than Ailian shouldered her weapon and sprinted toward the Wraith; Kelin and Lina followed close behind, while Lekain turned slowly.

“Young Master Ye, please look after Master Ropemaker. We’ll handle the battle.”

Before Ye Qingfeng could respond, Lekain dashed toward the battlefield.

Ye Qingfeng scooped up Ies from beside his feet, held him close, stared fixedly at the fighting figures, and stepped back several paces to ensure they wouldn’t be caught in the crossfire.

He stood still, watching with calm assurance.

For Wraiths, their sole purpose seemed to be attacking any living thing they encountered—this was Ye Qingfeng’s own conclusion based on what he’d seen.

Clearly, this Wraith didn’t follow that rule.

In fact, this had happened since his first arrival: the Wraith formed from Bai Lao, the boss of the Red Fang Gang—or rather, the Corrupted (humans transformed into such beings). Its first directive wasn’t like other Wraiths’.

Instead, it attacked any living thing near the safe, though whether that included other Wraiths was unknown.

This proves that all Corrupted behave by entirely different rules than other Wraiths!

Fascinating! This is incredibly fascinating!

Aside from the Hollow and its derivatives, everything else in this world is hardly different from his past life.

Humans are curious about novel things; to Ye Qingfeng, Wraiths were the most novel of all.

Just recently, when this Wraith suddenly appeared, only Ye Qingfeng found it novel—even beautiful and elegant!

Others didn’t share this thought; when they learned his view, they gave him strange looks.

Would a normal person think this way about a Wraith?

They’d probably suspect Ye Qingfeng was a member of the Praise Sect!

The Praise Sect says: We’re villains, not perverts—this guy’s a pure pervert, don’t get near him!

“...”

“Qingfeng, who do you think will win?”

Ling asked.

Ye Qingfeng was speechless.

Four against one, and she’s asking him who will win?

The Wraith wins, hands down!

Though he thought this, he still explained to Ies in his arms, based on the actual situation.

“The battle seems evenly matched now, but the Wraith can’t fight four at once—it’s overwhelmed. Unless it lands a killing blow on one of them—”

“Clearly, Ailian and Lekain won’t give it that chance. Its defeat is only a matter of time.”

“Oh oh! Qingfeng has the potential to be a commentator!” Ling nodded dreamily. “Even a battle idiot like me can understand!”

“Without any surprises, that Wraith will lose within three minutes,” Ye Qingfeng declared firmly.

During the days he helped Ling and Zhe with their commissions, Ye Qingfeng encountered the Rope Network and read the posts classifying Wraith levels.

Wraiths commonly called “Notorious Wraiths” are Level 4 or higher. Though he’d never seen one himself, he’d mostly encountered Level 1 to 2 Wraiths.

The last time he’d seen a Level 4 Wraith was during the incidents at Bai Zhi Heavy Industry and Yuanjing Industry. Afterward, he specifically asked Nico and Ling.

According to them, the greatest difference between Level 4 Wraiths and lower ones is an overwhelming sense of pressure!

Only by facing one directly can you truly understand that feeling.

This Wraith, however, gave Ye Qingfeng no sense of pressure whatsoever.

Two minutes later, the Wraith blocked Lekain’s strike, used the force to leap backward, showing not a trace of disorder—still composed, still elegant.

If a human displayed such behavior, Ye Qingfeng would be certain they had a hidden trick—but... do Wraiths even understand that?

“What a stubborn opponent,” Lekain sighed.

Under the combined assault of Victoria’s four, the Wraith had suffered almost no damage—it was utterly unbelievable.

Normally, even using every trick to hold back a Notorious Wraith is manageable, yet here they’d hit a wall.

Lekain sensed something was off.

At the same moment, a flash of insight crossed Ye Qingfeng’s eyes. He, like Lekain, had noticed the anomaly—and he’d also deduced the Wraith’s behavioral rule.

Without doubt, this Wraith was once a ballerina. And beyond the dancer, what’s most important in ballet?

The accompaniment! The music playing from that player!

“Ling! It’s the player!” Ye Qingfeng warned.

“I know!” Ies leapt to the ground, raised the player high, and bounced up and down toward the Wraith. “Hey! Wraith! Look here!”

All attention turned to Ies—except the Wraith, which seemed only intent on dancing freely, incidentally killing everyone.

Ies turned toward the stairs and decisively threw the player downward. The Wraith instantly turned its head, locking its gaze on the flying player, and leapt after it without hesitation.

It stretched out its arm, all focus fixed on grabbing the player.
