Chapter 9: Suppressing Souls and Clearing the Streets, Receiving a Call to Locate a Corpse

~8 min read 1,473 words

After his wounds had healed, Chen Yusheng walked to the third-floor balcony and looked down; hundreds of Sangshi were gathered on the street.

He examined them carefully and, upon confirming there were no Mutant Zombies among them, finally let out a sigh of relief.

At this moment, his stomach suddenly rumbled; he was starving, so Chen Yusheng decided to leave this place and go out to find something to eat.

Clutching the Warding Off Evil Talisman, he pushed open the third-floor door; the roars of the Sangshi downstairs could be heard clearly.

He narrowed the effective range of the Warding Off Evil Talisman, lifted his feet to head downstairs, and soon reached the first-floor lobby.

The lobby was full of Sangshi, but as Chen Yusheng walked outward, these Sangshi all retreated.

Although they feared the Warding Off Evil Talisman, they stared viciously at Chen Yusheng, roaring at the top of their lungs as if they were ready to pounce and bite him at any moment.

Walking onto the street, hundreds of Sangshi swarmed over all at once.

Once all the Sangshi were within a ten-meter radius, Chen Yusheng did not hesitate; he raised his hand and drew a talisman in the air.

"Go!"

With a flick of his finger, the Soul-Suppressing Talisman exploded above the heads of the Zombie Group; with a continuous series of thuds, the hundreds of Sangshi fell to the ground like harvested wheat.

After doing this, Chen Yusheng picked up a fire axe and got to work.

The Soul-Suppressing Talisman he condensed with True Qi could keep the Sangshi immobile for ten minutes, which was enough time for him to finish off all of them.

Pfft, pfft, pfft.

His hand rose and the axe fell; every strike landed on a Sangshi's neck.

The Sangshi lying on the ground had no way to resist; like fish on a cutting board, it was basically one axe per kill.

In less than ten minutes, all hundreds of Sangshi had been hacked to death by him.

After killing the Sangshi, Chen Yusheng looked at the pickup truck nearby.

There were several large burlap sacks in the truck bed, though he did not know what was inside.

The group of people who drove this car out of the city yesterday must have been scavenging for supplies, so there might be food inside.

Curious, he walked to the side of the truck bed and opened a sack, only to be stunned.

There was no food inside at all; it was all pots, bowls, ladles, and basins.

He opened several more sacks in succession, and they were all the same; besides kitchenware, there were also some steel materials like rebar and steel pipes in the truck bed.

Chen Yusheng did not give up; he opened the back door of the pickup to search, and this time his efforts were not in vain—he found some food in the back seat: a dozen pieces of bread and two bottles of water.

He did not dawdle and quickly ate the bread and drank the water; the hunger in his stomach immediately lessened quite a bit.

"Huh, is this a mobile phone?"

In the storage compartment in front of the passenger seat, Chen Yusheng touched a strange-looking mobile phone.

This phone was about the size of a brick, had a super-large screen, and a long antenna sticking out.

He turned the phone on and found it actually still had power and was already switched on.

He had never seen the characters on the screen before, but strangely, even though he did not recognize them, he could instinctively understand them.

This was just like when he spoke with those robbers yesterday; although he had never heard their language, he could instinctively understand it and even converse with them.

It stood to reason that this must be the language and writing he had mastered after transmigrating, which the original owner had known.

Chen Yusheng looked at the phone, and what surprised him even more was that it actually had two bars of signal.

"Could this be a satellite phone?"

Looking closer, the phone was locked; besides checking the time and date and answering calls, he could only make emergency calls.

In this situation, he could only use it to check the time.

Swiping the screen, it also showed at the top that there were over a dozen missed calls.

Bzz—bzz—bzz!

The phone suddenly started vibrating; someone was actually calling.

"Hmm?"

Chen Yusheng was stunned for a moment before pressing the answer button.

As soon as the call connected, a heavy intake of breath came from the other end; clearly, the person on the other side had not expected this call to go through.

"Hello? Is this Dad?"

A little girl's voice came from the phone, sounding only about twelve or thirteen years old.

"I am not." Chen Yusheng's voice was low.

"Then you must be the murderer who killed my dad, Chen Hai, right?" The little girl's voice trembled, and she sounded like she was gritting her teeth.

"Sorry, your dad wanted to kill me, and I just killed him in self-defense; if you want to blame someone, blame him for his own incompetence." Chen Yusheng's tone was very flat.

The other end of the phone went silent, with only heavy breathing audible.

After a long while, the little girl's choked voice came through: "Uncle Qiu said Dad was dead, and I never believed it, but now I do. Can you tell me where my dad's body is? I want to find him and bury him properly."

"The Uncle Qiu you mentioned didn't take your dad's body back?" Chen Yusheng asked in return; this Uncle Qiu must have been one of the people who hunted him yesterday.

"No, Uncle Qiu and the others are all Scavengers; they don't care about bodies at all. I begged him to take me to collect my dad's body, but he wouldn't, saying it was too dangerous outside." The little girl's voice was filled with tears.

"Sorry, I don't know where your dad's body is either! I have amnesia; I only remember that outside a ruined city, your dad and his group wanted to kill me, and I killed a few of them in self-defense." Chen Yusheng told the truth, then quickly asked, "You said my name is Chen Hai, do you know anything about my situation?"

"I know a little."

"Can you tell me about it?"

"No." The little girl refused flatly.

"If you tell me, I'll go help you find your dad's body right now and lay him to rest." Chen Yusheng offered a condition.

"Then can you send my dad's body back?" the little girl immediately pressed.

"Ha? Impossible."

Sending the body back would be walking right into a trap; Chen Yusheng refused without a second thought.

"Then I won't tell you." The little girl's voice turned cold instantly.

Chen Yusheng frowned, then said in a deep voice, "If you don't talk, believe it or not, I'll go over right now and destroy your father's corpse?"

As soon as these words were spoken, the breathing on the other end of the phone immediately became rapid.

"You... fine, you settle my father's corpse first, and then I will tell you what I know about your situation." The little girl's voice carried a hint of compromise, yet remained stubborn.

"Deal!" Chen Yusheng thought for a moment and then nodded.

From the conversation with the little girl, he caught a piece of key information, which was that the group of people who hunted him down yesterday had already returned.

In that case, even if he returned to the place where the battle took place yesterday, there would be no danger.

"Do you know your father's phone password? Once I arrive at the location, I'll take a video for you to see," Chen Yusheng asked.

"I know, it's ****..." The little girl recited a string of numbers.

"Alright, wait for my news."

Chen Yusheng felt he should go find the little girl's father's corpse immediately.

He wanted too badly to know who the original owner of the body was after his transmigration.

He was also not afraid that the little girl would go back on her word; after all, her father's corpse was still in his hands.

"By the way, what does your father look like?"

"There is a photo of my father in the phone's photo album," the little girl replied.

After hanging up the phone, Chen Yusheng stopped dawdling, quickly climbed into the driver's seat of the pickup truck, turned the key to start the ignition, and the vehicle was actually able to drive.

Not long after, the pickup truck drove out of the urban area, and Chen Yusheng followed the road he came from yesterday, driving toward the place where the battle took place yesterday.
